Bellator Announces Curran-Pitbull For Title At Bellator 121

Sunday, April 20th, 2014

Bellator featherweight champion Pat Curran will defend his title at Bellator 121 in June against Patricio "Pitbull" Freire.

The event takes place June 6 from Thackerville, Oklahoma and the Winstar World Casino. This is the lone bout announced to date.

Curran (20-5) reclaimed the title when he bested Daniel Straus earlier this year. He also defeated Freire back in 2013 via split decision.

“Pitbull has been running his mouth a lot lately and everyone is sick of hearing it,” Curran said. “I'm ready to shut him up for good. I'm an even better fighter now than I was the first time we fought and I'll show you Pitbull a true champion fights on June 6.”

Freire (21-2) has won four straight since the loss to Curran, including a November TKO over Justin Wilcox.

“I’ve been wanting this rematch with Curran for a long time, and it’s finally here,” Pitbull said. “I won that first fight, and I should be Bellator featherweight champion right now. This time, I’m not going to let it go to the judges. Curran has started to get cocky and he's disrespecting me. He has no idea what I've been through to get to the title. I’m going to put a brake on his tongue on June 6.”

Bellator is anticipating a hotly-contested bout, as these two have exchanged words on more than one occasion.

“Curran and Pitbull are two of the best featherweights on the planet,” Bellator chairman and CEO Bjorn Rebney said. “Curran’s win in their first fight last year makes for a great 2nd title fight. This should be fireworks on June 6. We always look to kick off our Summer Series strong, and this main event will be a fantastic anchor to what will be an incredible night of fights.”
