Occasionally MMA match-ups look great on paper but don’t play out as perfectly as they should. Last night’s battle between Ben Henderson and Clay Guida was not among that group, a lightweight rumble reading like a masterpiece in the making that fully delivered on fans’ high expectations.

Guida and Henderson, who went at it full speed for fifteen minutes, were both awarded for their efforts with $65,000 each and “Fight of the Night” honors. Henderson will now move on to a title-shot in February after picking up the decision win while Guida will head back to the drawing board in hopes of returning to the contendership picture.

On the subject of divisional gold, newly-crowned heavyweight king Junior dos Santos received an extra layer of icing an already sweet cake when his strike-based stoppage of formerly undefeated champion Cain Velasquez was named “Knockout of the Night”, yet another chapter in the fairy tale story of what “Cigano” has accomplished since coming from abject poverty.

Finally, “Submission of the Night” and the attached cash went to Ricardo Lamas who tapped out Cub Swanson with an Arm-Triangle Choke in the second round of a hotly-contested affair. The win was the second for Lamas in the UFC after a solid run in WEC highlighted by wins over Dave Jansen and Bart Palaszewski.
