The Ultimate Fighter Season 17 kicked off last night with the evening's action featuring 28 middleweights squaring off for 14 spots in the house. With fancier cameras and much sharper editing, the premiere episode also broke new ground. For the first time in history, fighters were able to invite a few friends and family members to the fights, enabling the show to feature loved ones in the small profile pieces for each fighter. The approach added a very interesting dynamic to the viewing of the bouts and certainly gave viewers a chance to get to know this season's competitors better than in year's past.

Chael Sonnen won the coin toss and elected to have the first pick in the "draft", leaving opposing coach Jon Jones to pick the first fight.  For the match-up, Jones chose Gilbert Smith from his team and #1 choice Luke Barnatt from Team Sonnen. The two are set to face off on next week's episode.
