Contrary to popular belief, the story of modern mixed martial arts doesn’t begin with UFC 1 in Denver in 1993 or with the Gracie family of Brazil. Though of course the Gracies deserve a prominent place in the history of MMA, their intention was never for fighters to begin training across styles. Quite the opposite! Their intention was to prove that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was the most dominant style of martial arts, a traditional and now seemingly archaic notion about dominance of a single fighting art. Sport MMA is an unintentional by-product of their goal.
No, UFC 1 created the most prominent forum ever for martial arts styles to mix, but the philosophical underpinnings of MMA began in the San Francisco Bay area in 1965 by an ingenious martial arts pioneer: Bruce Lee, known in his native China as Jun Fan.

Throughout season ten of SpikeTV’s The Ultimate Fighter, right through “Big Country” Roy Nelson’s (14-4) knockout of Brendan Schaub (3-1) at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale in Las Vegas Saturday night, UFC President Dana White paid Nelson distinctly less respect than any of the fighters in the competition.
White said Nelson has “the worst physique in professional sports” and complained about Nelson’s confidence throughout the competition.

Fighters.com fourth-ranked light heavyweight “Sugar” Rashad Evans (14-1-1) received his black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from Rolles Gracie (2-0) Saturday before UFC 108. The awarding of black belts today in mixed martial arts (MMA) is becoming homogenized as many fighters seem to be able to get them as easy as a Big Mac. It is a disgrace to the fighting style of Jiu Jitsu, the black belt lineage and to Helio Gracie himself.

This week on “Inside MMA” on HDNet Ed Soares, manager to many of the top Brazilian fighters, told hosts Kenny Rice and “El Guapo” Bas Rutten (28-4-1) that Fighters.com and UFC middleweight champion “The Spider” Anderson Silva (25-4) would be willing to fight Fighters.com and UFC welterweight champion “Rush” Georges St. Pierre (19-2) at any weight if that is what the fans want.
