Another one went into the history books tonight, fans and friends. Rick Story is a grinder. He's a finisher, he's a prospect, and he knows becoming a legitimate threat in the welterweight division. "The Horror" Story was most recently in action on December 4 for "The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale" when he defeated fellow budding star Johnny Hendricks, extending his win streak to now five-in-a-row and becoming a prominent fixture in the 170-pound weight class. While the phrase “quietly making waves” can be considered a bit of an oxymoron, it almost-perfectly describes the situation UFC Welterweight Rick Story finds himself in. The three-year MMA veteran has been a bit of a background fighter in his time with the UFC, but that’s a bit unfair when you consider that he’s on a five-fight win-streak with two finishes and hasn’t lost since June 2009. Now more than ever, Story is looking to break away from the shackles of obscurity and emerge as a legitimate threat in the crowded, highly-competitive Welterweight division of the UFC. What an interesting year it’s been for the top-ranked and resurgent Thiago Alves. Alves entered 2010 coming off of undoubtedly the biggest loss of his career, a five-round all-out thrashing courtesy of Georges St. Pierre that happened at UFC 100. After a long, sordid history of postponements, Alves finally fought rival Jon Fitch in August in the rematch that seemingly refused to be made. Not only would Alves lose convincingly once again, he would come in overweight by almost two pounds. However, “The Pitbull” seemed to make a triumphant return at the recent UFC 124 event, as Alves practically mauled John Howard and made it look easy. If anybody's dedication to the sport should be unquestioned, it's Thiago Alves. Since his inception into the UFC over 4 years ago, "The Pitbull" has done nothing but impress. However, his best days in the welterweight division appeared to be behind him when the American Top Team product dropped back-to-back decisions to current champion Georges St. Pierre and perennial contender Jon Fitch, respectively. After successful brain surgery that removed an abnormality, Thiago appeared to have a new lease on life, however, the Brazilian admitted that between campaigning for his rematch with Fitch and the subsequent surgery that their were times where he doubted his longevity and desire to compete in the world of mixed martial arts anymore. ...

Season 12 coaches of "The Ultimate Fighter" Georges St. Pierre and Josh Koscheck have been expected to tangle with one another at UFC 124, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in a welterweight clash. Champion GSP will look to make his fifth successful title defense against foe Koscheck. The two had met previously at UFC 74, where the American Kickboxing Academy product was riding a 5-fight win streak inside the cage coming into the bout, meanwhile, "Rush" was coming off of a disappointing and shocking knockout loss to the unheralded Matt Serra at UFC 69. While competitive in spots, St. Pierre was able to dominate the wrestling department against the former NCAA champion, en route to a unanimous decision victory. ...

It’s one of the biggest debates going in today’s decision-filled world of big fights not living up to their potential: why are wrestlers rewarded for taking their opponents to the ground and doing nothing? Depending on whom you, ask there’s a growing feeling of resentment (some have even entered the land of legitimate hatred) towards decision-heavy wrestlers like Jon Fitch, Gray Maynard, and to some extent, even Georges St. Pierre. Despite being one of the most dynamic strikers and one of the most entertaining fighters in the UFC’s welterweight division, one question has begun to haunt top-ranked Thiago Alves: his weight. Thiago Alves has always been a large welterweight, but talks concerning his struggle to make weight started in earnest at UFC 84, where Alves weighed in three pounds over the weight limit, even when you include the one-pound-over allowance given to non-title fights. Heading into his recent fight against Jon Fitch, Alves had once again failed to make weight, and as a penalty for his infraction, “The Pitbull” gave up a whopping 20% of his fight purse. The pieces have all unfortunately began falling into place, and now that Alves is just another victim of the patented Jon Fitch Grind, I think the time is right for Alves to move up a weight division. Despite his success in the UFC, these continuously hard weight cuts will only cause further harm to himself and his finances, not to mention the fact that Alves would be a welcome addition to the UFC’s resurgent Middleweight division. ...

Despite being a top-ranked UFC welterweight, Jon Fitch always seems to be the one guy that everybody knows about but nobody really pays attention to. One of the best wrestlers in the UFC regardless of weight divisions, Fitch has twelve victories inside of the world’s biggest MMA organization, and has only lost three times in his eight-year, twenty-six fight career. Even with one championship fight under his belt and another on the horizon so long as he can get past his UFC 117 match-up with fellow former contender Thiago Alves, the aura and marketability of Fitch pales in comparison to division kingpin and UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre. As a fan of Fitch, it’s time for a little tough love. So here are three things I think Jon Fitch needs to do in order to become a real UFC star. ...
