Shamar Bailey, a Strikeforce veteran was recognized as one of the top prospects on the show. And while the coaches recognized his obvious talent, it was Brazilian Junior dos Santos which was able to snatch up Bailey as his first-pick amongst the 14 welterweight would-be hopefuls.

And as has been the formula in the past, Dos Santos managed to pit his best fighter against the perceived weak link of Brock Lesnar‘s team in order to get the ball rolling and remain in control early in the competition.

Shamar, a talented wrestler, was pitted against Nordin Asrih, Lesnar’s last pick, and the welterweight bout was underway.

The fight was billed early as a striker versus grappler match, and while every fight begins on the feet, Nordin never had a chance.

Bailey took down the native of Germany seemingly at will over and over again, maintaining top position and often working to side control, mount, and working in short punches and elbows. Eventually, Asrih began to visibly fatigue and was able to mount no offense, though hung tough to the final bell.

In the end, Bailey was the obvious winner on all of the judges score cards and was awarded the unanimous decision win.

Dos Santos was extremely proud of Baily, while Lesnar sat back and admitted that the fight’s finish was inevitable and felt that the fate of the match was sealed from the start. UFC President Dana White was not particularly a big fan of Shamar’s style, as he described as just Bailey taking his opponent down and resting on top of him for the full ten-minutes of the exhibition bout.

And now, Team Dos Santos is control early of the picks, moving 1-0 in the competition.
