More Scott Coker Comments: The Future of Strikeforce on CBS

I reported recently that former PRIDE FC and UFC star and newly-signed strikeforce star Dan Henderson had said that his recent inactivity was due to some political warfare between Strikeforce and the CBS network that has kept “Hendo” off the airwaves. CBS seems to be hesitant to re-invest in MMA despite the network boasting some of the highest-rated MMA shows in history, back when it was the now-defunct EliteXC promotion and not Strikeforce that was on national TV. And for good reason: the last CBS-televised Strikeforce event saw a post-fight brawl break out on national television after three straight fights went to a full five-round decision. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker recently commented on the situation in an interview with Sherdog. Here’s what the soft-spoken promoter had to say. ...

Scott Coker Talks About the Future of Strikeforce and the Heavyweight Division

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker is in an enviable and yet at the same time not-so-enviable position. As the head of the largest MMA promotion not directly owned by Zuffa and therefore the largest alternative to the juggernaut that is the UFC, Coker is in charge of such big-name talents as Fedor Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem, Dan Henderson, Nick Diaz, and many more. While he can put on major cards on the Showtime network and even CBS, Coker still struggles daily with the growing nature of his promotion and the simple fact that he’s not number one in the game. In a recent interview, the soft-spoken promoter filled us all in on where he stands with some of Strikeforce’s biggest stars and his even bigger plans for the future. ...

What on Earth Can Contain Diaz/Noons 2? Scott Coker Says "Security, and Lots of It."

Ask any EliteXC fans (if there are any left) what “don’t be scared homie” means, and you’re likely to get a chuckle. Immediately after KJ Noons defeated Yves Edwards to defend the EliteXC Lightweight Championship he won off of a victory over Nick Diaz, Diaz would get into the cage with many of his Team Cesar Gracie teammates and utter those words to his hated rival. What followed was an in-ring scuffle between both camps that remains infamous to this day. With one Diaz-led brawl already under his belt, how is strikeforce CEO Scott Coker going to prevent all-out mayhem when Diaz and Noons face each other once again? Here’s what he had to say on a new episode of “The MMA Hour”. ...

2010 World MMA Awards; Nominees widdled down and we have our Finalists

As the year is coming closer to an end, the now annual World MMA Awards, which is hosted by Fighters Only Magazine, has recently announced their finalists for the December 1st event, which will take place once again in Las Vegas, Nev., which has become a hot bed for all things fighting related. The 2009 event opened up to a large audience, and has become a propellant in the mixed martial arts world, opening up the eyes to a mainstream audience, by the community taking leaps and bounds in order to legitimize itself as not only a legitimate sport, but one that deserves that same sort of recognition that most others receive, here in these United States. ...

UFC's Brock Lesnar Takes The Throne As The New Emperor - Fighters.com's July Heavyweight Top Ten

For Fighters.com and UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar (5-1) it's been a three-year roller coaster from MMA novelty to undisputed heavyweight champion.  But, after former top-ranked "Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko's (31-2) stunning loss to "Vai Cavalo" Fabricio Werdum (14-4-1)  at Strikeforce/M-1 Global in San Jose June 26 and Lesnar's arm triangle submission of Shane Carwin (12-1) at UFC 116 Saturday, there can be no dispute among any rational fan, fighter, journalist, or promoter that indeed Lesnar now sits atop the mountain in the world heavyweight rankings.
The debate is over, for now.
Lesnar already has second-ranked Cain Velasquez's (8-0) name on his dance card to defend his new status.
Throughout the last year's Emelianenko-Lesnar debate, UFC President Dana White repeated "the best fighters in the world fight the best three times per year."  Yet, Lesnar has never passed that threshold.  Of course, Lesnar suffered from diverticulitis for several months, which postponed his UFC title defense until Saturday.  However, even without the illness, Lesnar would've only fought twice in 2009.
Fighters.com challenges White to make good on his promise to keep Lesnar on a four-month fight schedule, which would perch the Lesnar-Velasquez matchup at the top of the UFC 121 card rumored to be heading for Oberhausen, Germany.  More likely though, White will end the year with the matchup at UFC 122 in Las Vegas.
At UFC 117 in Oakland August 7, it seems the next top UFC contender will be decided betwen third-ranked "Cigano" Junior dos Santos (11-2) and The Ultimate Fighter 10 champion "Big Country" Roy Nelson (15-4).
Werdum ascends to the fourth spot with his submission of Emelianenko in the matchup promoted to determine the next Strikeforce title challenger to ninth-ranked "Demolition Man" Alistair Overeem (33-11).  However, it seems that was only if Emelianenko had won. Since the inconcievable Werdum victory, Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker has thrown just about every potential matchup at the wall to see what sticks except the natural Overeem-Werdum title fight to crown a clear Strikeforce champion.  Maybe Werdum and Emelianenko will rematch.  Maybe Overeem and Emelianenko will fight for the title to determine who gets the next crack at higher-ranked Werdum.  It's all confusing and Fighters.com encourages Coker to go with plan A and match the champ Overeem with the top contender Werdum.
Carwin drops to the fifth spot with his loss to Lesnar.  Carwin...dare I use the word...dominated Lesnar in round one, but exposed a weakness on his back in round two that must be fixed if 35-year old Carwin expects to make another run to the top.
Emelianenko drops to the sixth spot.  I'm willing to have a reasonable discussion about where Emelianenko ranks, but not with anyone who'll continue to rank Emelianenko first.  You're delusional.  Part of Emelianenko's ranking is just circumstantial.  For right now, Werdum is a better fighter than Emelianenko as evidenced by the actual fight in which Werdum defeated Emelianenko.  There's no would'ves, should'ves, or could'ves to discuss after two fighters fight.  Therefore, Werdum must rank above Emelianenko.  Similarly, Werdum was knocked out by dos Santos at UFC 90 west of Chicago in October 2008.  In an effort to rank fighters presently and not historically, Fighters.com limits the considered record of fighters to their work in the previous two years.  Therefore, dos Santos must rank above Werdum who must rank above Emelianenko.  That's Fighters.com's method and why Emelianenko ranks sixth after losing to Werdum.
Neither seventh-ranked Frank Mir (13-5) nor eighth-ranked "Minotauro" Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (32-6-1) have any scheduled or rumored fights on their calendars.
Though Coker had mentioned rematching tenth-ranked "The Grimm" Brett Rogers (10-2) and former UFC heavyweight champion "Pitbull" Andrei Arlovski (15-8), Fighters.com has confirmed both with Rogers's camp and Strikeforce that the rematch has never been officially offered to Rogers.
Fighters.com's July Heavyweight Top Ten
1. Brock Lesnar (5-1)
2. Cain Velasquez (8-0)
3. "Cigano" Junior dos Santo (11-2)
4. "Vai Cavalo" Fabricio Werdum (14-4-1)
5. Shane Carwin (12-1)
6. "Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko (31-2)
7. Frank Mir (13-5)
8. "Minotauro" Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (32-6-1)
9. "Demolition Man" Alistair Overeem (33-11)
10. "The Grimm" Brett Rogers (10-2)

Fedor, and Werdum, and Overeem. Oh My! Making Sense of Strikeforce's Heavyweight Division

All the pieces were in place. “Vai Cavalo” Fabricio Werdum (14-4-1) had done the impossible beating  “Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko (31-2) in 69 seconds at Strikeforce/M-1 Global in San Jose Saturday. In the audience, a stunned Strikeforce heavyweight champion “Demolition Man” Alistair Overeem (31-11) sat mouth agape in shock. He had predicted an Emelianenko knockout victory over the Brazilian who had also tapped him out in a Kimura at PRIDE Total Elimination Absolute in Osaka in 2006.
A rematch was in the making!
But, for Strikeforce President Scott Coker, it wasn't the rematch that everyone expected. Werdum has built an audience on CBS and in the UFC and had just dethroned the top-ranked heavyweight. The exciting Dutch kickboxer, Overeem, cemented his North American marketability by dominating “Grim” Brett Rogers (10-2) last month. But as a title matchup between Werdum and Overeem left the station full-steam ahead, Coker derailed the fight by tossing out that he'll probably rematch Werdum and Emelianenko, possibly on a pay per view card.
It might be the first non-title fight ending conclusively, uncontroversially, and frankly anti-climacticly to ever get immediately rematched.  Does Emelianenko deserve a rematch?
Strikeforce's heavyweight division is Bizzaro World.  Rogers gets knocked out by Emelianenko and earns a title shot versus Overeem.  Werdum taps out Emelianenko and...earns a rematch versus Emelianenko?  And, where does that leave Overeem?
Of course, Coker has dollar signs in his eyes. Strikeforce thinks a rematch between Werdum and Emelianenko will generate pay per view buys based on the hype around Werdum's upset.  But, Emelianenko has been a consistent pay per view failure in North America, topping out at around 100,000 buys.  And now you can't even sell the mystique of being the world's top heavyweight.  To the general public who have to plunk down $44.95 for a pay per view card, he's now just another Russian fighter.
But, Coker is right that Emelianenko is the biggest name Strikeforce has.  And, all signals coming from Stary Oskol are that Emelianenko's next fight is his last in Strikeforce.  So, why not get the most from his last fight with a pay per view card?
That's a short-term view.  That's running a fight promotion fight-to-fight rather than creating a league, which is to date the only MMA model to consistently succeed in North America.  The league is the UFC's model.
After Emelianenko, Werdum, and Overeem, it seems like Strikeforce's next ranked heavyweight is former EliteXC champion “Bigfoot” Antonio Silva (13-2).  Why not legitimize Strikeforce's heavyweight title with the natural Overeem-werdum title fight on a card that also gives Silva an opportunity to impress versus Emelianenko?  Then you've used Emelianenko to potentially make another big name the way Werdum has made his name bigger with his win.
No, I don't think Silva can beat Emelianenko.  But I also didn't think Werdum had the proverbial snowball's shot either.  Fighters wither fast.  No one realized at the time that “Rampage” Quinton Jackson's (28-8) knockout of "Iceman” Chuck Liddell (21-8) at UFC 71 in Las Vegas in 2007 was the beginning of the end for the MMA legend.  If that's the case with Emelianenko, why not spread the king-making around your heavyweight division and create another marketable name?
Silva's camp, American Top Team, doesn't feel empowered to ask for the fight versus Emelianenko after Silva lost a unanimous decision to Werdum at at Strikeforce/M-1 Global west of Chicago last November.  ATT also thinks Silva has the inside track for a title fight versus Overeem if the Werdum-Emelianenko matchup goes forward, and they're quite content to fight Overeem for the title.
But, Overeem versus Silva is another consolation prize for the Strikeforce title.  Werdum is the obvious top contender in the division and the hype behind the Werdum-Emelianenko fight was that the winner would fight Overeem for the title.  Overeem was even flown in, interviewed for a prediction during the broadcast, and put on screen after the fight.
All the pieces were in place. “Vai Cavalo” Fabricio Werdum (14-4-1) had done the impossible beating  “Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko (31-2) in 69 seconds at Strikeforce/M-1 Global in San Jose Saturday. Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker told MMA Junkie, "I can tell you this: If Cesar Gracie says to me, 'Jose's training with me, I'm going to get him ready, and I'm going to do it in four or five months,' and Cesar's telling me this? That will have a lot of weight on what we decide [about Canseco fighting for Strikeforce.]" ...

Strikeforce Dealing With Fedor Emelianenko's, Alistair Overeem's Open Contracts

UFC President Dana White has been criticized for the promotion's all-bases-covered, iron-clad contracts that prevent UFC fighters from fighting in any other promotion.  But, White has an advantage over promotions that don't follow suit.  When White wants a fight, he gets the fight if the fighters he wants matched up are under contract. ...

James Toney in the UFC, Good for MMA?

It was announced that heavyweight boxing champion “Lights Out” James Toney (0-0) has signed a five-fight deal with the UFC. The latest is that the contract is the first ever non-exclusive contract that the UFC has done. The signing of Toney can be looked at as a freak show, a shot to beat Strikeforce to the punch or a vehicle to prove that MMA is greater than boxing but no matter how you view it the important question is what will this do for the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). ...

Strikeforce cut welterweight "New York Bad Ass" Phil Baroni (13-11) Thursday.

In an unusual and stinging press release, the San Jose-based promotion justified it's decision: "The 33-year-old Baroni has lost four of his last seven bouts. In his last appearance, a welterweight matchup with "Diesel" Joe Riggs (30-11) [in St. Louis 6 June], Baroni sustained a one-sided defeat by way of unanimous judges’ decision."

Before Baroni's release was officially announced, Sherdog reported Baroni had verbally agreed to a contract returning him to the UFC for the first time since tapping out in a guillotine to "Drago" Pete Sell (8-5) at UFC 51 in Las Vegas in February 2005.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker confirmed Fighters.com's hypothesis that Affliction M-1 Global's Trilogy was Affliction's final event regardless of ninth-ranked heavyweight “Babyface Assassin” Josh Barnett's (20-5) positive test for 2a-methyl-5a-androstan-3a-ol-17-one, an anabolic steroid, causing the cancellation of Trilogy.

Barnett denies using steroids.

In an interview published at MMA Weekly, Coker said, "That was already in the works. How they got out...[if] they became a sponsor for Strikeforce, [were] the conversations we were having. This was their last fight, so there would be no more fighters. The dialogue was that they were getting out of the business a month ago."
