Pat Barry is many things. He’s a very skilled kickboxer. He’s a UFC fighter. He’s the man that recently had to deal with being on the receiving end of one of the greatest come-from-behind victories in both UFC and general MMA history. And above all else, Pat Barry is a genuinely good person. In a new interview, Barry gave his full, candid thoughts on his historic fight with Cheick Kongo. Here are all the highlights as well as my reaction to them. ...
Hello once more fans and friends and welcome to another new edition of “Best of the Rest”! I really enjoy taking the time to give my detailed thoughts on a show after watching it, but after the serious discussion and debate I’ll raise in topics like “Top 5 Best Moments” and “Best Performance of the Night”, I think it’d be nice to have a semi-serious, occasionally tongue-in-cheek topic where I give out some other “awards”. It’s all in good fun, although I’ll raise a serious point occasionally. So let’s dive right into this latest edition, now featuring “UFC on Versus 4”. ...
“UFC on Versus 4” was quite the event. Not only did we see an amazing one-round war between Cheick Kongo and Pat Barry, we also saw the ascension of Charlie Brenneman, the continuing evolution of Matt Mitrione, and many, many free fights on Facebook. But which stars shined brightest, and what moments will fans be talking about in the following weeks? Here’s my take on the matter: my top 5 best moments of “UFC on Versus 4”. ...
It’s over, fans and friends… my “Perfect Storm” weekend is now no more. For three straight days we were lucky enough to get three shows by three different promotions, and only one of them (Strikeforce’s “Challengers 16” event) didn’t measure up. Bellator 46 was amazing, and “UFC on Versus 4” was almost equally as exciting. Now once again it’s time to ask: what’s next? What does the future hold after we witnessed one of the greatest comebacks in UFC and MMA history? Here’s my answer to just that: a new edition of my “What’s Next for the Winners and Losers” series of articles, now featuring “UFC on Versus 4”. ...
With one of the greatest come-from-behind victories I’ve personally ever seen, the UFC’s fourth “UFC on Versus” event certainly lived up to the hype of being almost as good as a Pay-Per-View and better than most “Fight Night Live” events. This is an event that had to deal with its headlining attraction getting nixed approximately twenty-four hours from go-time, and it passed the test with flying colors. Here are the full results as well as some early commentary for “UFC on Versus 4”. ...
On June 26, 2011, the UFC will hold its highly-anticipated “UFC LIVE: Marquardt vs. Story” event, featuring former UFC Middleweight Championship contender Nate Marquardt dropping down to Welterweight and fighting Rick Story. Also, fierce kickboxers with massive power in both their hands and their feet will collide at the event also known as “UFC on Versus 4”, with Cheick Kongo taking on Pat Barry. Still, some fans may be asking themselves: what are the best reasons to check out this card? Here’s my answer to just that: 5 reasons to watch “UFC on Versus 4”. ...
We’re now only a few days away from “UFC on Versus 4”. In the main event, fast-rising prospect Rick Story tackles his toughest challenge to date, former title challenger Nate Marquardt. Nate “The Great” is dropping down in weight and looking to make a statement at 170. The co-main event will also be an interesting match-up, as entertaining kickboxers Pat Barry and Cheick Kongo lock horns. As is customary, here is my official “picks and predictions” post (covering who I think will win and why), now featuring “UFC on Versus 4”. ...
Hello once more fans and friends and welcome to the latest edition of “Crash Course”. This is the third “Crash Course” in as many days, and it’s the final entry before we head directly into what I’ve dubbed “The Perfect Storm”, that being three different promotions holding three distinctly unique events on three separate days. So let’s get right to it with today’s edition, featuring “UFC LIVE: Marquardt vs. Story”, also known as “UFC on Versus 4”. ...
And now, fans and friends, it’s time for the second half of my traditional two-part “start of month” posts. After previewing the major cards set to go down this month, it’s now time for me to give my thoughts on what my favorite fights will be. June is a huge month for MMA: at one point, there’s going to be three different events from three different companies in three days. It doesn’t get much more crazier than that. So with all the can’t-miss events heading our way, what are the absolutely-can’t-miss fights? Here’s what I think. ...
Ever since it began back when the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion was still around, the UFC’s “UFC Live” events, also known as “UFC on Versus”, have been an interesting mix of fights and fighters. In general, the events are as good or sometimes better than an average “Fight Night Live” outing, but below the standards of an average UFC Pay-Per-View. It’s no substitute for the WEC, but at least it shows that the UFC is committed to Versus. Recently, twelve fights have been officially confirmed for the fourth “UFC on Versus” event. Here are all the details. ...
At the start of 2011, the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion was folded into the UFC, bringing both the Featherweight and Bantamweight divisions into the Octagon for the very first time. Since then, it’s been hard not to consider the Versus network the red-headed stepchild of the UFC’s programming network, since the UFC’s absorption of the WEC drastically cut down the number of live MMA events on Versus. But the UFC continues to try and please fans with its “UFC on Versus” events, events which are usually better than your average “Fight Night Live” but not quite as good as a UFC Pay-Per-View. And recently, nine fights have been made official for the UFC’s upcoming “UFC on Versus 4” event. Here are all the details. ...
Bigger than most “Fight Night Live” events but not quite up to the standard of most ufc Pay-Per-Views, the UFC’s “UFC on Versus” events have always delivered a night of interesting and sometimes high-profile fights. Confirming weeks of rumors, the UFC recently and officially announced/confirmed four bouts for the “UFC on Versus 4” broadcast, including the Welterweight debut of former UFC Middleweight Championship contender Nate Marquardt. Here are all the details. ...
When it was first announced that Cheick Kongo would be fighting Pat Barry, I honestly found myself quite surprised at how much I liked the sound of that fight. I think it’s an honest assessment to say that both men are one-dimensional kickboxers in a multi-dimensional sport, but that does a disservice to their high level of striking. And you know what else? I think both men suffer from some undue criticism. I’m honestly really looking forward to this fight, and here’s why. ...
Several ufc bouts have since been announced, and now add one more to the list. Two of the most dynamic strikers in the heavyweight division will now be pitted against one another, as fan favorite Pat Barry will be taking on Cheick Kongo in their next bouts. Both men are expected to meet with one another this June for "UFC on Versus 4", which is tentatively scheduled for June 26, however no venue has been mentioned at this time. ...
There are many different ways of saying the following phrase, but to put it simply and plainly: haters gonna hate. And while there are different ways to glitz that term up and ways of making it a bit more politically correct, it’s a great term nonetheless, and one that everyone has to encounter sooner or later. UFC star Pat Barry knows that term very well, since critics continue to hound him following his high-profile loss to Mirko Filipovic. Now with a dominating performance over Joey Beltran under his belt, Barry recently took the time to address his critics and give some thoughts on what his future holds. ...
No UFC fighter is immune to criticism, that’s one of the hazards that comes with being a professional athlete and celebrity. Even the best fighters in the world have their fair share of cynics. Some get it worse than others, though, of that there can be no doubt. And one of those individuals just so happens to be Pat Barry, who recently vented his frustrations in a new interview. According to “HD”, Barry is still hounded by his high-profile submission loss to Mirko Cro Cop, and is tired of fans constantly approaching him and his loved ones and questioning his will to fight. Here are all the details. ...
Duke Roufus, leader of Team-RoufusSport, received a monster shot of adrenaline last month when his then rising star, Anthony Pettis, exploded into orbit with his Matrix wall climb head kick in his win over Ben Henderson. Now, Roufus looks to transfer that mojo to his number two prospect, Pat Barry, taking center stage on January 22 at UFC Fight Night 23 against the dangerous Joey Beltran. Roufus and Barry were in the corner for Pettis and now "Showtime" and Roufus will be backing the New Orleans native as he looks to rebound after his loss to Mirko Filopovic. Roufus is excited to see a vastly improved Pat Barry, who he says has been working hard to diversify his tool box of skills. ...
Anthony Pettis has shot to stardom under the tutelage of Duke Roufus as part of Team RoufusSport in Milwaukee. Pettis has the fight of his life on Thursday night, against Ben Henderson, for the WEC lightweight belt and a shot at the UFC lightweight title. Pettis' trainer, Duke Roufus, recently spoke with Fighters.com and shares how Pettis may approach Henderson and why he is so difficult to fight. In this jam packed interview, Roufus also sheds light on the other stars in his camp including, how Alan Belcher is recovering from his eye injury, what went down when Pat Barry fought Cro Cop, and what lies ahead for Matt Mitrione. Click through for the audio interview. ...
As the clock turns ever-closer to 2011, the UFC has several big fights and events lined up to kick off the new year in style. Perhaps one of those most important events is not the New Year’s Day UFC 125 or the Super Bowl Weekend UFC 127, but the second edition of “UFC Fight for the Troops”, a “Fight Night Live” event designed to raise money for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund. 11 fights have recently been made official for the card, and while not PPV-caliber, it is star-studded nonetheless. Here are all the details. ...
Two more bouts have become official for the second installment of "UFC Fight for the Troops" event, which will take place at Fort Hood, Killeen, Tex. on Jan. 22. The headliner of the evening will put former title challenger Kenny Florian against top lightweight contender Evan Dunham. Serving as the co-main event is expected to be the fast-rising prospect in Matt Mitrione, whom was featured on the ultra-popular tenth season of "The Ultimate Fighter", as he takes on veteran Tim Hague. A multitude of bouts have been added to the stacked 11-bout fight card, and now today two-more have been officially confirmed by the promotion for the event. ...
An exciting heavyweight match up has been added to the new January 22nd show. Pat Barry, who currently holds a 2-2 record within the organization, is hoping to bounce back from a disappointing loss to former PRIDE champion, Mirko Cro Cop at ufc 115 last June, with a win over glorified heavyweight, Joey Beltran. Possibly two of the smallest men in the heavyweight division, with Barry standing at 5'11 and Beltran weighing in no more than 240 pounds or so (when in reality, he could very well drop to the light heavyweight division), don't judge a book by it's cover. While both these men in stature don't match up with the elite in the weight class, both pack a mean punch. ...
Mirko Cro Cop has stepped up to the plate to face Frank Mir at UFC 119, in what was thought to be ample time to prepare. Antonio Rodgrigo Nogueria, Mir's original opponent for the main event of the evening bowed out of the contest some time ago, approximately two months before the bout was to take place. Now, as the fight looms closer, an injury and insufficient time to prepare, cited by "Cro Cop", may give the Croation the disadvantage come Saturday night. ...
According to MMAJunkie, MMAWeekly and among other media outlets, UFC executives officially made official the main event of UFC 119, Frank Mir will in fact take on former Pride Grand Prix Champion Mirko "Cro Cop" at the Conseco Fieldhouse, in Indianapolis, Minn. on September 25th. ...
This weeks installment of "Weekly Jab" brings you news on the new UFC light heavyweight champion, a former NFL football player and one of the most recognizable names in the sport. ...
UFC heavyweight “Cro Cop” Mirko Filipovic (26-8-2) and “HD” Pat Barry (3-2) will matchup at UFC 115 in Vancouver June 12, according to MMA Scraps Radio. ...
Fighters.com and UFC Light Heavyweight Champion “Dragon” Lyoto Machida (15-0) weighed in two-and-a-half pounds under the 205-pound light heavyweight limit Friday, a day before he'll defend his titles from sixth-ranked “Shogun” Mauricio Rua (18-3) at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles Saturday. ...
Friday the UFC confirmed that the contender matchup between Fighters.com's seventh-ranked middleweight and former WEC champ Chael Sonnen (22-10-1) and UFC contender “Thunder” Yushin Okami (23-4) is not scheduled for the pay per view broadcast of UFC 104 in Los Angeles October 24. ...
The UFC officially announced Thursday the rest of the line-up for UFC 92, which takes place 27 December in Las Vegas.
French heavyweight Cheick Kongo (12-4-1) will meet UFC newcomer Mustapha al Turk (1-0), “The Hammer” Matt Hamill (4-2) will meet Reese Andy (7-2) in a light heavyweight bout.
Other bouts announced were “Piranha” Ryo Chonan (15-8) versus “Bad” Brad Blackburn (12-9-1), Antoni Hardonk (7-4) versus Mark Burch (10-2), and Dan Evensen (10-5) versus Pat Barry (1-0).
