With all this talk of the WEC-UFC merger, new dream match ups, it looks like we almost all forgot about the "little promotion that could"--Bellator Fighting Championship's continues to impress, and once again has crowned a new champion amongst it's ranks. While a steady stream of new upstart prospects have claimed the titles from the season's past champions, specifically former featherweight champion Joe Soto relinquishing his title to current title holder Joe Warren in a come-back finish in their September tussle, and former welterweight champion Lyman Good losing to talented Olympic wrestler Ben Askren. The pressure was all on Hector Lombard, who remained one of the last original champions from Bellator's first season (Eddie Alvarez has yet to defend his title against season 2 tournament winner Pat Curran sometime in the near future). ...
Many of the casual fans still may not know who Megumi Fujii is. I've heard of her, but never really got to know who she was until Bellator initiated it's 115-pound women's tournament, then everyone (including myself) got to witness the talk of the town, in "Mega Megu". A life long competitor, Fujii is the only fighter, male of female, to go undefeated in 22 professional fights. Her record ties her up with mixed martial legend Bas Rutten for what is considered to be the longest undefeated streak, however, even the great "El Guapo" had been defeated four times in his earlier days, whereas Fujii has yet to taste defeat. A black belt in Judo and Jujutsu (not Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, just Jujutsu), coupled with an evolving stand up arsenal, Fujii is poised to make the case for herself in being the greatest fighter of all time. ...
If my recent defense of Women’s MMA should tell you anything about me, it’s that I love watching Strikeforce’s females. While Women’s MMA as a whole is still growing and mostly playing catch-up to standard-bearers like Cristiane Santos and Megumi Fujii, it’s not even up for debate that Strikeforce has the best female MMA division of all the promotions that have female MMA divisions. This is why I was so excited for a one-night, 135-pound tournament to crown a contender for Sarah Kaufman’s 135-pound Strikeforce Women’s Championship. All four women involved in this tournament were very different from one another, and the clash of styles could have parlayed into four (with the reserve bout) straight show-stealing performances. While I think the fights themselves were decent enough, ultimately, the one-night tournament fell flat on its face and I’m honestly glad that it’s over. It was a novel idea that could have worked, but it failed for one major reason: the ridiculous time limits. ...
Pat Curran (12-3) entered the night as an underdog yet again but pulled off a split decision, some are calling controversial, victory over Toby Imada (26-15) to win the lightweight tournament. We also saw Megumi Fujii (20-0) get her first TKO victory and become the only fighter that Fighters.com is aware of to go 20-0. ...
