At UFC 133, rising Light Heavyweight fighter Alexander Gustafsson faced Matt Hamill during the special “UFC Prelims LIVE” broadcast that aired on Spike TV. Gustafsson would end up beating Hamill in the second round by TKO, marking only the second time Hamill had ever been stopped. It was also the first time in Hamill’s career that he had lost two fights back-to-back. Unfortunately, that first time now appears to be the only time. Today, Matt Hamill officially announced his retirement from the UFC and Mixed Martial Arts in general. Here are all the details. ...
As stated before, there are several ways of answering the question “how successful was the ufc’s latest event?” It should also be pointed out that that’s a question that takes on an entirely different meaning when you’re one of the proud few inside the Octagon. For fighters, success is measured in two chief ways: how healthy you are once the fight is over, and if the money you make made it all worthwhile. We now have official numbers on both. Here are the full medical suspensions as well as fighter salaries from “UFC 130: Rampage vs. Hamill”, featuring some huge pay discrepancies and some potentially-long layoffs. ...
UFC 130 was, as a whole, an unfortunately underwhelming event. But it was not a bad event, far from it in fact. UFC 130 saw a host of big fighters fighting in big fights, with several interesting wars of attrition and some big highlight-reel KO’s But which stars shined brightest, and what moments will fans be talking about in the following weeks? Here’s my take on the matter: my top 5 best moments of UFC 130: “Rampage vs. Hamill”. ...
UFC 130: “Rampage vs. Hamill” is now a thing of the past. Quinton Jackson has now taken a big step towards another shot at a UFC championship, and so has Frank Mir. Meanwhile, Matt Hamill and Roy Nelson must somberly reflect on what changes they need to make in order to beat top-quality competition. Now once again it’s time to ask: what’s next? What does the future hold after such an event? Here’s my answer to just that: a new edition of my “What’s Next for the Winners and Losers” series of articles, now featuring UFC 130. ...
Another one went into the history books tonight, fans and friends. The ufc continued its long journey by holding its one hundred and thirtieth event yesterday, featuring what was expected to be several interesting matches between big-name stars. So, how was “Rampage vs. Hamill”? Unfortunately, this is one of the rare instances where I’m wrong for all the right reasons. I wanted to like this card, I tried to keep telling myself that it’d be better than everyone was saying it would be. And it was… just not by much. Here are the full results as well as some commentary on UFC 130: “Rampage vs. Hamill”. ...
Today the UFC will hold its highly-anticipated “UFC 130” event, featuring a jam-packed main card and five free fights through Facebook and Spike TV. The card features an ensemble cast of former champions, former title contenders, and more: Frank Mir, Roy Nelson, Quinton Jackson, Miguel Torres, and Thiago Alves are just some of the names attached to this card. Still, some fans may be asking themselves: what are the best reasons to check out this card? Here’s my answer to just that: 5 reasons to watch UFC 130. ...
We’re now only a few days away from UFC 130: “Rampage vs. Hamill”. In the main event, former “Ultimate Fighter” contestant Matt Hamill takes on his toughest test to date: former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson. The co-main event will also be an interesting match-up, as former UFC Heavyweight and Interim Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir takes on “Ultimate Fighter” Season 10 winner Roy Nelson. As is customary, here is my official “picks and predictions” post (covering who I think will win and why), now featuring UFC 130. ...

Hello again fans and friends, and welcome to the finale of my special mini-series “A Closer Look at UFC 130”. I’ve done my best to cover each and every UFC 130 fight in as much detail as I possibly can, and after four days of coverage, we’re finally at the conclusion. The only fight left is the main event, which puts a former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion against a man that’s been working his way towards a title shot for the last several years. It’s Quinton Jackson vs. Matt Hamill, and it’s the final entry in “A Closer Look at UFC 130”. Let’s dive right in. ...
Ever since it was announced that both Frank Edgar and Gray Maynard were forced to pull out of their main event showdown at UFC 130, reception to the replacement main event has been decidedly mixed. For those unaware, UFC 130 is now set to be headlined by a Light Heavyweight showdown between former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson and Matt Hamill. And unlike some, I think this will be a great main event. Why do I think so? Here’s just that: five reasons why Quinton Jackson vs. Matt Hamill should be a great fight. ...
It’s rare that I find myself wholeheartedly agreeing with ufc President Dana White. It’s not because I have some sort of vendetta against the man, unlike some of his cynics I’m well aware of the contributions he’s made to this sport and I don’t have a problem giving credit where credit is due. I tend to often disagree or partially disagree with him simply because he’s a controversial man that says controversial things. But recently, Dana White perfectly summed up my feelings on why Matt Hamill vs. Quinton Jackson isn’t getting half the praise that it should be: Matt Hamill fights to finish, and Rashad Evans vs. Quinton Jackson was a boring fight. ...
Hello once more fans and friends and welcome back to the latest installment of my “5 Reasons Why” series. Today’s dual entries focus on the impending showdown between former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Quinton Jackson and Matt Hamill. For the first part, covering five reasons Hamill could beat “Rampage”, click here. Now it’s time to focus on five reasons why Jackson could beat “The Hammer”. ...
A certain section of the fanbase doesn’t seem too happy that Quinton Jackson will soon step into the Octagon against Matt Hamill. Even “Rampage” himself recently said that he would rather fight Rashad Evans again. But I actually like this match a lot. Some think that Hamill will be an easy fight for “Rampage”, but I definitely disagree. So with that in mind, I’d like to present the newest entry in my “5 Reasons Why” series, this time focusing on five reasons why Matt Hamill could beat Quinton Jackson, with the reverse soon to follow. Let’s get started. ...
What a difference a few days can make. A short time ago the MMA world was buzzing that Thiago Silva may have been pulled from his upcoming bout with Quinton Jackson, and a popular rumor pointed towards a second encounter between “Rampage” and arch-rival Rashad Evans. It’s now been more or less confirmed that Matt Hamill will be taking on Jackson, and the reaction to this bout has been lukewarm at best. My question is: why? I’m actually pretty interested in this bout. In fact, here are five reasons to already be looking forward to Quinton Jackson vs. Matt Hamill. ...
As the news has recently come in about a recent shuffle for UFC 130, already people have been weighing their opinions on the proposed match-up pitting Quinton Jackson against Matt Hamill. "Rampage", a former UFC light heavyweight champion, was originally scheduled to face off against Brazilian slugger Thiago Silva before he came under scrutiny with recent allegations of a failed drug test post-UFC 125 last January. Since that time, a rumor had been floating around that rival Rashad Evans would instead take Silva's place, however multiple sources have confirmed that Hamill, not Evans, will be meeting with Jackson come this May, though if you'd ask Quinton, he'd much rather face off against the Greg Jackson product. ...
As reported earlier, Thiago Silva's bout with former champion Quinton Jackson looked to be in jeopardy. The light heavyweight contender recently scored a dominating decision win over former contender Brandon Vera at UFC 125, however since then his future has come under question, when the Brazilian's post-fight drug test results have gone anything but smoothly. MMAJunkie.com previously reported that the American Top Team product was the sole fighter on the January fight card who's post-fight drugs screenings were still under the scope, and since then Silva has admitted some foul play, though suggests that no performance enhancing drugs were involved. Now, his loss is another man's gain, as Matt Hamill has since stepped up in his place. ...
Phil Davis will now enter the deep end of the light heavyweight division. The collegiate wrestling All-American will now embark onto the upper echelon of the packed 205-pound division when he takes on "The Ultimate Fighter" veteran Matt Hamill coming up at UFC 129. The event is scheduled to take place on April 30 at the Rogers Center in Toronto, Ontario, Canada--the UFC's first inception into it's new territory. The venue can hold upwards to 60,000 in attendance, however the organization will likely taper down the number closer to 40,000, considering President Dana White has always stressed the importance of the fans experience. ...
Mixed Martial Arts, like many other professional sports, has a large amount of success stories woven into its intricate fabric. This is a sport that has allowed men and women to come up out of virtually nothing and find their place in the world and get their name in the history books. And one of the most inspiring stories simply has to be that of Matt Hamill, a four-year, eleven-fight veteran of the UFC that overcame deafness and has been considered a consistent threat since his debut in the world’s largest Mixed Martial Arts organization. Recently, the independent film “Hamill”, a “biopic” based on Matt Hamill’s early life, won a very important indy film award. Here are all the details. ...
ufc 121: “Lesnar vs. Velasquez” was the latest in a long line of super-cards that once again proved why the UFC is the best promotion on the planet. In the main event, Cain Velasquez trounced Brock Lesnar and became the first Mexican champion in UFC history. The event didn’t rest on that laurel, however, as Jake Shields debuted successfully at 121 while Diego Sanchez and Paulo Thiago had a great fight, in addition to the always-controversial Tito Ortiz fighting and losing to Matt Hamill. The list of fighter suspensions as well as salaries have recently been made public, here are all the details. ...
UFC 121: “Lesnar vs. Velasquez” was a great event filled with star-studded fighters and lots of up-and-coming talent, and further proved that the UFC likes to finish strong when it comes to their end-of-year activities. The UFC was more than happy to open their wallets after the event, and awarded their traditional “Of the Night” bonuses after the event, with four men pocketing an extra $70,000 for their spirited performances. Here are all the details, courtesy of Sherdog. ...
ufc 121 “Lesnar vs. Velasquez” is now in the history books, and what an event it was. We saw a new champion, close victories, big victories, and several very entertaining fights. 121 was filled to the brim with fighters that have all spent time at the top of the cards in recent years, but based on their performances at the event, it’s safe to say that some will be keeping that spot for the foreseeable future while others will be tumbling both down the cards and in relevancy. As is customary after every major PPV, here are my thoughts on what’s next for some of the big winners and losers at UFC 121: “Lesnar vs. Velasquez”. ...
ufc 121 “Lesnar vs. Velasquez” airs today live on Pay-Per-View from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. In the main event, Cain Velasquez looks to become the first Mexican UFC champion in promotional history when he takes on current UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar. The event will also feature the promotional debut of former Strikeforce Middleweight Champion Jake Shields, and the promotional return of former long-reigning UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Tito Ortiz. Everyone’s talking about UFC 121, so here are my picks and predictions for the night’s major fights. ...
One upon a time, Tito Ortiz was the face of the UFC. Adorned on the cover of magazines, video games, posters, there was no denying the impact that "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" has had on the sport, but are his best days behind him? Well, he certainly doesn't think so. After a tumultuous relationship with Dana White that hindered any talks of Ortiz, a former UFC light heavyweight champion, returning to the worlds largest mixed martial arts organization, he was later able to revitalize his career, mend fences and after two successful surgeries, he finds himself in awkward space: at the bottom, looking for his way back to the top. ...
We've all heard it before from Ortiz. He's claimed being healthy on, who knows how many occasions. Heading into his second bout with Forrest Griffin at ufc 106, all the pre-fight hype surrounding Ortiz was centered around him claiming that his re-entry into the the worlds largest organization would be on the heels of a successful surgery repairing damage to his back and neck (which had been sustained over the years). And claiming a clear bill of health, after the bouts conclusion Ortiz revealed a broken orbital bone and a cracked skull as the ultimate cause of a poor performance turned against his rival (the two met previously some years ago, where Ortiz claimed a highly disputed split-decision victory at UFC 59, while Griffin picked up a split-decision victory in the rematch). ...
After pulling off one of the most unexpected returns in recent history, former long-reigning ufc Light Heavyweight Champion Tito Ortiz still hasn’t fully capitalized on his return to the UFC after unexpectedly burying his long-standing and famously bitter beef with UFC President Dana White in July of 2009. Since then Ortiz has competed only once in the promotion that made him famous, losing to Forrest Griffin in November of 2009. A stint on “The Ultimate Fighter” and another surgery in a long list of surgeries kept Ortiz out of action for nearly a year, but heading into yet another comeback fight at UFC 121 against Matt Hamill, “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy” once again contends that he’s in incredible shape and will recapture his glory days in his next fight. ...
The meteoric rise of Jon Jones has been well documented, while the less flashy climb to the top that Ryan Bader has traveled has been perhaps less noticeable. But, none the less, both competitors will find themselves pitted against one another when the collegiate wrestlers meet at an as of yet announced event in Las Vegas, Nev., for UFC 127. Jones, the proverbial golden boy of the light heavyweight division, has been nothing but impressive since his inception into the UFC. While his record reads 11-1, by all means the Endicott, New York, native is an undefeated prodigy. ...
Despite being in the middle of a two-fight losing streak, I personally think the future’s still quite bright for Brandon Vera. I don’t think he’ll ever reach the potential that he could have achieved when he first came into the UFC and people were predicting that he would be the next UFC Heavyweight Champion, but I think he will always have the skills to consistently be “in the mix”. His star status may be on the decline, but I really don’t see any shame in losing to the likes of Randy Couture and Jon Jones. However, even though Jon Jones quickly finished Vera in their “UFC on Versus” fight, Vera recently stated that he still doesn’t buy into the hype. Personally, I’m never again going to bet against Jon Jones. ...
The Ultimate Fighting Championship recently released the official lineup for their upcoming UFC 121 event, and it should come as no surprise that Brock Lesnar defending his UFC Heavyweight Championship against Cain Velasquez has taken center stage as the show’s main event. Brock Lesnar was last seen pulling off one of the biggest, best comebacks of 2010, absorbing all former UFC Interim Heavyweight Champion Shane Carwin had to give him for five full minutes, then submitting Carwin via Arm Triangle Choke early in the second round. Cain Velasquez’s last fight saw him demolish the once-unbreakable chin of PRIDE FC legend Antonio Rodrigo “Minotauro” Nogueira. UFC 121 will take place October 23 in Anaheim, California, and features a star-studded main card in addition to the big-money main event. ...
While Jon Jones has faced the toughest opposition of his career most recently, he's made it look easy and efficient. Even in a losing effort (albeit a disqualification) to TUF veteran Matt Hamill, Jones looked every bit as dominant as he has in wins over perennial contender's Brand Vera and most recently, Vladimir Matyushenko. It's hard to say what will be next for the 205-pound wrestling stud, but Jones in the mean time is enjoying his most recent triumph none the less, which now moves him to 11-1 overall, and marks his fifth win, inside the octagon. ...
The eleventh season of "The Ultimate Fighter" (TUF) came to an end last night and finalized the line up for the finale with Court McGee (9-1) facing off against Kris McCray (5-0) in the finals. ...
