Should Strikeforce Sign Marcus Davis? "The Irish Hand Grenade" Says Yes, I Unfortunately Disagree

It’s been a rough and tough couple of years for “The Irish Hand Grenade” Marcus Davis and his fans. A staple of the UFC’s welterweight division known for putting on exciting fights win or lose, Davis has lost four of his last five and was recently cut from the UFC following a KO loss to fellow veteran Jeremy Stephens in Davis’ debut at Lightweight. Davis recently made his case for a shot in the surging Strikeforce promotion, but is it realistic to say that Strikeforce is missing out by not signing Marcus Davis? Here are all the details. ...

Marcus Davis also released from the UFC following recent loss this past weekend; where to go from here?

Former welterweight contender Marcus Davis is now one of the many fighters that have recently been axed by the worlds largest mixed martial arts promotion. The "Irish Hand Grenade" competed as recent as last weekend when he took on up-and-comer Jeremy Stephens at UFC 125 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. In his first bout as a lightweight, Davis looked good early on, staggering the spitfire Stephens in an early exchange, however the Mark Dellagrote protege failed to capitalize on the opportunity and would surely later regret as Jeremy was able to come from behind and knock out Marcus in the third round for a spectacular knockout victory. ...

UFC 125 Medical Suspensions: Broken Noses Hit Four Top Performers, Including Lightweight Champ Frank Edgar

ufc 125 “Resolution” featured a great night of fights that ended with a fantastic main event between Frank Edgar and Gray Maynard. It was a hard-hitting night of action, with several great knockouts, some slick submissions, and easily one of the most heinous broken noses ever seen during the course of an MMA bout. But the night was actually filled with several nasal fractures, not just Brandon Vera’s hideously crooked honker. With the release of the UFC 125 medical suspensions, no less than four fighters will be out for at least thirty days in order to get their noses repaired. Here are all the details. ...

Top 5 Reasons To Watch The Surprisingly Awesome Undercard Of UFC 125 "Resolution"

UFC 125 “Resolution” is fast approaching us, fans and friends, and New Year’s Day should give us an amazing card filled with great fights. Much has been made of the main Pay-Per-View card, since it features big match-ups featuring major stars like Nate Diaz, Takanori Gomi, Clay Guida, and many more. But here’s something you may not know: this show even has a ridiculously stacked undercard. It’s so good, in fact, that it warrants a Top 5. So here are five great reasons to find a way to watch UFC 125’s undercard. ...

"The Irish Hand Grenade" Ready to Explode at Lightweight, Marcus Davis Wants a UFC Championship

Even though he’s a thirteen-fight veteran of the UFC with five “Of the Night” bonuses throughout his many wars in the Octagon, Marcus Davis has never been perceived as a top-division star. He’s fought some impressive, entertaining wars against the UFC’s middle ranks, but he always seems to falter right when he’s on the cusp of actual championship relevancy. However, Davis knows this full well and is dropping down to Lightweight in order to finally fulfill his dream of holding a UFC championship. In a new interview, Davis outlines his plans for the future and promises that the best is still yet to come. ...

Three Questions To Be Answered At UFC 125
Three Questions To Be Answered At UFC 125

One reason the UFC product can be so addictive for the serious fan is how each event sets up the viewer with hanging issues and questions ahead of the show … then answers those questions via the outcome of the fights while concurrently establishing and creating a whole new slate of issues and questions which propels the fan towards the next event. UFC 125 has some obvious sales points mainly centering around the main card title fight between Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard.  However, some second tier questions will also get solved or advanced towards solution come January 1st. ...

UFC 125: "Resolution" Now "Officially Official", and Should Be a Great Start for MMA in 2011

Another ufc event has recently been made official, with eleven bouts now confirmed to be taking place. While anything could happen between now and then, the UFC recently released their lineup for UFC 125: “Resolution”, which takes place on New Year’s Day and features Frank Edgar defending his UFC Lightweight Championship against the only man that’s ever beaten him, Gray Maynard. With credit going to MMA Junkie, here’s the official lineup for the event, which is scheduled to take place January 1, 2011 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. ...

Marcus Davis makes his lightweight debut against Jeremy Stephens at UFC 125

After a long and storied career as a welterweight which began after the second season of "The Ultimate Fighter", Marcus Davis will begin a new chapter when he meets Jeremy Stephens at ufc 125, now as a lightweight. Since his inception in the UFC in 2005, Davis has been known for his boxing prowess, having knocked out three of his opponents inside the octagon. However, his submission game has been playing catch-up. In addition to his knockout ability, Davis has shown that he is no one trick pony, having submitted four opponents in the cage as well, adding veterans Pete Spratt, Paul Taylor and Paul Kelly among his victims. Losing three of his last four bouts, "The Irish Hand Grenade" knew that a change was in order. So when he announced his drop to the lightweight division a couple of weeks ago, and when Jeremy Stephens took to twitter begging for the fight, it looked like it would only be inevitable. ...

"Lil Heathen" wants to take on Marcus Davis in his lightweight debut

Jeremy Stephens is recognized as one of the lightweight divisions' most ferocious competitors. From bell to bell, "Lil Heathen" is gunning for the knockout victory, which is evident through his victories over standouts Rafael dos Anjos and Cole Miller. So when Stephens called out fellow slugger Melvin Guillard to action, it was a bout that was implicated as an all out slug fest. Unfortunately, the two dynamic lightweights didn't exactly deliver to the billing, and the three-round affair turned lackluster very quickly. In the end, "The Young Assassin" was declared the victor by split-decision, extending his winning streak to three-in-a-row while snapping Stephens' two fight win streak inside the ufc. However, Jeremy will have the chance to vindicate himself should he successfully campaign himself for a bout against former welterweight contender, Marcus Davis, who suggests that his career will continue now as a lightweight. ...

Lawlor over Cote: Good wrestling beats good standup every time, it seems. What is Joe Silva to do?

Once again, I sympathize with UFC matchmaker Joe Silva.   On paper, Tom Lawlor vs. Patrick Cote at UFC 121 had all the ingredients for fireworks.  Yet, as we see more and more, when you combine a pure puncher with a native wrestler … who is committed to only wrestling, the potential for a sleeper is always close at hand. In baseball it goes ... "good pitching beats good hitting." In MMA should it go ... "good wrestling beats good standup?" ...

It’s that time again, fans and friends. That unfortunate time that comes after an MMA event, a time to evaluate how many bruises need healing and how much time needs to be spent sitting on the sidelines. UFC 118 featured a host of great match-ups, from Nate Diaz dismantling Marcus Davis to Frankie Edgar dominating BJ Penn, and of course, the utter obliteration of aging pro boxer James Toney at the hands of Randy Couture. The Massachusetts State Athletic Commission has recently revealed the list of medical suspensions for UFC 118, and while most got off lightly, a few may have a bit of a stretch spent recuperating rather than training. Here’s how it all breaks down. ...

Diaz Drama: Nate Wants Top Contenders, Nick Will Have to Kill KJ Noons

Neither Nick nor Nate Diaz are strangers to controversy. The brothers have been involved in bitter rivalries, post-fight brawls, and all manner of not-so-nice activities. Saying that the Diaz brothers are MMA’s premier bad boys would be an understatement. But for the first time in either man’s careers, their abilities are beginning to eclipse their bravado. Nick and Nate were always talented, but with a string of recent performances, both men are starting to get taken seriously as best-in-the-world talent. Tough tests lie ahead for both men, as Nate Diaz recently made known his intentions to fight top-tier welterweights in the UFC, while Nick’s arch-rival and next opponent recently claimed that Nick would have to kill him to beat him. ...

What's Next for the Winners and Losers of UFC 118: "Edgar vs. Penn 2"?

Well, that sure was surprising wasn’t it? UFC 118 was filled with awesome fights, big winners, and big losers. From Nate Diaz choking out Marcus Davis to James Toney getting choked out by Randy Couture, UFC 118 lived up to just about all of its potential. Looking forward, here’s what I think is next for some of the big winners, and even some of the big losers, of UFC 118: “Edgar vs. Penn 2”. ...

UFC 118 Results: James Toney Flops in MMA Debut, Frankie Edgar Dominates BJ Penn

While UFC 118 may not have been the best MMA card of 2010, it certainly was one of the most interesting. And even if it doesn’t take the top spot for “MMA Event of the Year”, I’d say that it easily makes Top 10, perhaps even Top 5. Some of the preliminary matches were outright boring, but then you had Joe Lauzon put on the performance of his life while Nate Diaz took one giant step forward towards getting out of the shadow of his brother Nick. Then of course you had the shocking main event fights: Gray Maynard lived up to his nickname “The Bully” by dominating Kenny Florian in a way that few other men were ever able to do, James Toney was sent packing back to pro boxing via an Arm Triangle Choke by UFC Legend Randy Couture, and in the main event, Frank Edgar solidified his position as the best Lightweight in the world by putting on an absolute clinic against BJ Penn. Here are the official results for UFC 118: “Edgar vs. Penn 2”, as well as my analysis of several of the major fights. ...

Just One Question: Why Are We Overlooking Nate Diaz vs. Marcus Davis?!

For quite a whole lot of reasons, the upcoming UFC 118 event is quickly becoming the can’t-miss event of the latter half of 2010. Whether it’s James Toney vs. Randy Couture, Frankie Edgar vs. BJ Penn, or even Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard, UFC 118 sounds like a dream-card on paper. However, there’s one UFC 118 fight that I’ve seen a definitive lack of coverage on, and for the life of me, I can’t tell why. It’s virtually vanished from the popular press, but I’m really looking forward to the match-up between Marcus Davis and Nate Diaz. ...

By John Moody As fans filed out of the Bell Centre after UFC 113 in Montreal, a very unexpected encounter between bitter rivals took place in the locker room of welterweight Marcus Davis (17-6).  He had just defeated Jonathan Goulet (22-11) to break a two fight losing skid and rejuvenate his career. Davis requested that UFC officials bring Dan Hardy into his locker room for a meeting.  UFC brass had previously kept these two fighters apart at all costs, given the rancor that existed stemming from their controversial June 2009 fight.  As die-hard MMA fans know, Hardy waged a crude psychological war of words in advance of his UFC 99 fight with Davis.  A smack talk battle that ultimately lured Davis into saying things he now regrets and feels adversely affected his performance.  Coupled with Davis losing the decision to Hardy in a fight he adamantly believes he won, the effects from this period of time lingered with the Irish Hand Grenade. ...

UFC welterweight “Irish Hand Grenade” Marcus Davis (16-6) hasn't made a lot of headlines lately, losing two consecutive fights versus 170-pound contenders. But, Monday his Twitter post about his opponent in one of those two loses, fifth-ranked “Outlaw” Dan Hardy (23-6), reverberated through the MMA press.  Davis Tweeted, "I hope Dan Hardy dies of AIDS." ...

UFC 106: Kendall Grove, Marcus Davis to Fight on SpikeTV

UFC 106 undercard matchups between middleweights “Spyder” Kendall Grove (10-5) and Jake Rosholt (6-1) and welterweights “Killa B” Ben Saunders (7-1-2) and “Irish Hand Grenade” Marcus Davis (16-5) will be broadcast on SpikeTV at 9:00 PM ET/6:00 PM PT on November 21, SpikeTV announced. ...

UFC 106: Tito Ortiz Versus Forrest Griffin II Now Final

The remaining bouts for UFC 106 on November 21 in Las Vegas Nevada are now finalized, the UFC announced today. Topping the bill is the return of former UFC light heavyweight champion "Huntington Beach Bad Boy" Tito Ortiz (15-6-1) as he is set to face former UFC light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin (16-4) in a rematch of the 2006 fight that was Griffin's first loss in the UFC. ...

Sadollah vs Baroni, Saunders v Davis Official for UFC 106

Welterweight matchups between “New York Bad Ass” Phil Baroni (13-11) and The Ultimate Fighter 7 champ Amir Sadollah (1-1) and “Killa B” Ben Saunders (7-1-2) and  “Irish Hand Grenade” Marcus Davis (16-5) and a lightweight matchup between  George Sotiropoulos (10-2) and "Dynamite" Jason Dent (20-9) were officially announced for UFC 106 at Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas November 21 by the UFC Wednesday. ...

UFC welterweight "Irish Hand Grenade" Marcus Davis (16-5) will probably return at UFC 105 in Manchester 14 November, he told Fighters.com. "No fights yet," Davis said. "UFC is holding me out till November, I think." It's no surprise though. Davis hasn't fought in the Octagon stateside since tapping out "Secret Weapon" Pete Spratt (18-15) at UFC 69 in Houston in 2007. He's been an integral component of the UFC's European strategy. He lost a split decision to prospect "Outlaw" Dan Hardy (22-6) at UFC 99 in Cologne last June. ...

UFC welterweight "Irish Hand Grenade" Marcus Davis (15-4) told Fighters.com that he hasn't heard anything yet about a possible match-up versus "Lights Out" Chris Lytle (26-16-5) at UFC 93 in Dublin 17 January. Lytle had called for the match-up after winning a controversial unanimous decsion over "Relentless" Paul Taylor (9-4-1) at UFC 89 in Birmingham last weekend. But, the lack of a contract hasn't stopped Davis from trash talking Lytle to Eurosport. "I don't know whether [Lytle] deserves a fight against me.  People always say that Chris is the 'gatekeeper' to our division; but, I think that I am past the gate," Davis told Eurosport Friday. Davis tapped "Tellys" Paul Kelly (7-1) in a guillotine at 2:16 of round two at UFC 89.  Both Davis and Lytle won bonuses for their performances. "Irish Hand Grenade" Marcus Davis (15-4) tapped "Tellys" Paul Kelly (7-1) in a guillotine choke at 2:16 of round two at UFC 89 in Birmingham Saturday night. Davis photo courtesy of Josh Hedges and Zuffa, LLC. ...

UFC 89: Bisping & Leben Make Weight

All UFC 89 fighters made their weight today at the NIA for Saturday's card in Birmingham. Leben photo courtesy of Josh Hedges and Zuffa, LLC."Count" Michael Bisping (16-1) 185 pounds v "Crippler" Chris Leben (18-4) 186 pounds "I'm glad you guys let me into your country," main event fighter Leben said at Thursday's press conference.  "I was a little worried on the plane." Leben was originally scheduled to fight Bisping in London 7 June, but opted to put to rest legal issues in Oregon stemming from an earlier DUI arrest to ensure a legal UK visa. But, the pressure is squarely on the shoulders of Brit Bisping, who told the press, "I am on a quest.  Losing this fight for me is not an option." Leben, wearing tight cornrows, chided his opponent, saying, "It seems to me that, when Michael Bisping fights, self-preservation is top on his list." A brawl would certainly benefit Leben.  Bisping's stand-up style is a bit more circle-and-poke, while Leben is happy to plant and throw bombs. ...

Kelly Signs to Fight Davis in Birmingham

Brit Paul Kelly (7-0) will face “The Irish Hand Grenade” Marcus Davis (14-4) in a welterweight match at UFC 89 on 18 October in Birmingham, England, he confirmed to MMA Weekly Thursday. Kelly made his Octagon debut in January, earning a unanimous decision over fellow countryman Paul Taylor (9-3-1). UFC veteran Davis suffered his first loss in twelve fights last month in London, a unanimous decision that went to “Quick” Mike Swick (12-2). ...

Watching Fighters.com's fifth-ranked welterweight Matt Hughes(42-7) TKO'd at 1:02 of the second round by younger, stronger, faster, and more complete (currently) sixth-ranked "Pitbull" Thiago Alves (15-3) last night at UFC 85 in London, I couldn't help but recall the country boy whoopin' Hughes put on the original Ultimate Fighter Royce Gracie (14-3-3) two-years ago. Hughes stalked Alves for a takedown at the first bell, settling for bottom position by pulling guard, but never finding the submission opportunity he thought he could force. Again, Hughes took the Brazilian to the mat mid-way through the first and smothered the kickboxer; but, Alves utilized butterfly guard to neutralize Hughes's offense. The only damage done on the mat in round one was after the confident "Pitbull" bulldogged the veteran to the mat and hammered a crevice in Hughes's nose with an elbow strike. Hughes, like Gracie at UFC 60, was impotent. Alves wasn't falling for the tried and true tricks, wasn't physically overwhelmed by the stocky farm boy from rural Illinois, and wasn't intimidated by the future Hall of Famer's legacy. The second round was short; the end poignant. Hughes ducked for the takedown that's served as a sure-shot for ten years; and, Alves flew the distance between him and Hughes, colliding into Hughes's right jaw with his left knee. One punch later and referee Herb Dean waved off the fight, and, officially, the Matt Hughes era. Alves courtesy of Josh Hedges and Zuffa, LLC Alves never doubted the outcome, but remained humble while pleading from the Octagon, "Mr. Dana White, I've been a good boy, please give me a title shot!" "He got me, no doubt," Hughes admitted. For Hughes, there remains a grudge match with fourth-ranked "Terror" Matt Serra (9-5), then a lot of prayer and consultation with his family for the proudly Christian husband and father of two. ...

Second Big Chance for Sanchez

Last February in Vegas, North County Fight Club heavyweight Eddie Sanchez took one for the team. Sanchez looked like a lamb being lead to slaughter entering the Octagon to become Cro Cop's cage debut.  He took an "L" at 4:33 of round one by TKO. He was to become Cro Cop's only cage victim in three starts. Had Sanchez known Cro Cop was...human (as we found out in fights versus Gabriel Gonzaga and Cheick Kongo), he may have done enough to see the final bell, maybe even win. Sanchez may be given a second chance, this time with the vital intel' going in. The rumor among fighters is that Sanchez is getting the call to face Brock Lesnar at UFC 85 in London. Lesnar debuted in the Octagon versus Frank Mir and was quickly submitted via knee bar. Neither Sanchez nor Lesnar has confirmed.  Mum is the consistently official word at the UFC; so, I didn't even ask for official confirmation. Also rumored for the UFC's return to 02 Arena is a welterweight scrap between "The Irish Hand Grenade" Marcus Davis and "Quick" Mike Swick. The fight is tabled and awaiting signatures from the principles. Davis comes off a one-minute knockout of Jess Liaudin in Newcastle, making four stoppages and 11 wins in a row.  Swick's last night's work was a lackluster majority decision debut at 170-pounds versus Josh Burkman. Sokoudjou has confirmed judoka on judoka violence at UFC 84 in Vegas versus Kazuhiro Nakamura. "He's someone I respect," Sokou says.  "It's just business.  Nothing personal." Both return from losses to "The Dragon" Ryoto Machida. "The Hungarian Nightmare" Christian Wellisch says,  "I have not signed a contract for another fight." Wellisch is rumored to welcome hulking wrestler Shane Carwin to the Octagon at UFC 84. ...
