Strikeforce’s “Overeem vs. Werdum” event has so far received some very diverse reactions. Many people argue over how the main event between Alistair Overeem and Fabricio Werdum went down, with many agreeing that it was a bad fight that proved relatively little for both fighters. But this wasn’t a one-fight show, and we did see several entertaining finishes. But which stars shined brightest, and what moments will fans be talking about in the following weeks? Here’s my take on the matter: my top 5 best moments of Strikeforce “Overeem vs. Werdum”. ...

What If He Wins? Featuring Nick Diaz
What If He Wins? Featuring Nick Diaz

On April 9, 2011, Strikeforce Welterweight Champion Nick Diaz will defend his belt against arguably his most dangerous challenger yet and perhaps one of the toughest tests Diaz will have yet faced in his career. Standing in Diaz’s way to becoming Strikeforce’s most dominant champion is knockout artist Paul Daley, who has earned the nickname “Semtex” with twenty (T)KO wins. Many are calling for Diaz to win, and as a huge fan of Nick I’m certainly pulling for him. But what happens if he does? Here’s a new entry in my “What If He Wins?” series, focusing on what I think will happen if Nick Diaz beats Paul Daley. ...

Jorge Masvidal could replace Tatsuya Kawajiri and challenge Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez this April

One fight back in the promotion, and Jorge Masvidal has now possibly found himself right back into the title hunt at 155-pounds. The American Top Team product was last inside the cage when he bested then undefeated lightweight prospect Billy Evangelista with a dominating decision win just a few weeks ago. The Cuban fighter has stated that he would like to fight on a consistent, rapid basis and he might now get his wish. Originally, Jorge was expected to possibly clash with KJ Noons in Texas this April, however with the recent tragedies in Japan, Masvidal could next fill in for Tatsuya Kawajiri in order to face reigning lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez. ...

Eddie Alvarez confronts Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker
Eddie Alvarez confronts Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker

Bellator lightweight champion is a force to reckoned with in his weight class. After an illuminated run in Japan, where Alvarez has picked up some of the biggest wins of his career, which includes victories over the likes of former DREAM lightweight champion Joachim Hansen, former Shooto champion Tatsuya Kawajiri and current DEEP lightweight champion Katsunori Kikuno. Not impressed? En route to Bellator gold, he was able to submit all three of his opponents, including the heralded Toby Imada, a Jiu-Jitsu whiz who became an internet sensation with his inverted triangle choke over lightweight notable Jorge Masvidal, which garnered Imada the "Submission of the Year" on several publications, including a trophy award at the 2009 World MMA Awards, hosted by Fighters Only. So when Alvarez, 26, heard word that Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez has called him out on numerous occasions, the Philly fighter didn't take too kindly to it. ...

Scott Smith vs Paul Daley set for Strikeforce, December 4.

While Paul Daley's position with Strikeforce has been up in the air for the most part, some citing the British welterweight was signed to a 6-fight deal, others saying he has yet to sign--it look's like the cat is out of the bag now. Top 5 Opponents for Paul Daley in Strikeforce

A few days ago I reported that, after a lengthy contract negotiation, strikeforce had pulled the trigger and signed heavy-handed UFC-exile Paul Daley to a multi-fight contract. My overall outlook for Paul Daley in Strikeforce was positive and remains positive. If he’s utilized correctly, Daley could give us some very entertaining fights. It's Finally Official: Paul Daley Signs with Strikeforce

It’s been rumored, it’s been denied, it’s been on our minds for quite some time. And today it’s finally been confirmed: controversial heavy-handed striker and UFC exile Paul Daley is headed to strikeforce, according to both MMAMania and MMAWeekly. It was rumored that Daley had been in serious negotiations with the number 2 MMA promotion in the USA (and the world, for that matter) for months now, and it’s now known that  “Semtex” has signed a six-fight, multi-year contract. ...

Jorge Masvidal Signs With Strikeforce, Speaks on Paul Daley

Nothing makes up for a disappointing loss to a tough opponent quite like a guaranteed payday for the next year or two. Following a Unanimous Decision loss to feared Welterweight striker and UFC exile Paul Daley at the recent Shark Fights 13 event, Jorge Masvidal recently announced that he had signed a six-fight, two-year contract with the strikeforce promotion, which as a MMA promotion is second only to the juggernaut that is the UFC. Masvidal also commented on the fight with Daley, and had some less-than-kind words for his opponent. ...

Shark Fights 13 Weigh-Ins: Paul Daley Misses the Mark Yet Again

Today marks a pivotal turning point in the surging Shark Fights promotion, as weigh-ins were held to make their upcoming Pay-Per-View card “Shark Fights 13” official. Featuring a main event between Keith Jardine and Trevor Prangley, Shark Fights 13 looks to be a solid card admittedly filled with a majority of ex-UFC stars. However, they're some pretty intriguing fights for what they’re worth, and the only problem that arose during the weigh-ins was that Paul Daley once again missed the mark. ...

Jorge Masvidal: First of all, I never lost to Rodrigo Damm.  Anyone who looks at the fight will agree with me.  The only steam I was blowing off was towards the referee who called my last fight!

Strikeforce Sapped of Excitement

Reliably adequate Nor Cal MMA promotion Strike Force put on a snoozer Saturday at the Tacoma Dome. The event headlined by "The Beast" Bob Sapp's North American MMA debut was beamed live in HD on HDNet. BUM-BUM BUM-BUM BUM-BUM BUM Sapp was TKO'd in 55 seconds by 2-5 South African Jan Nortje. That's about as anti-climactic as the fight, which began with Sapp entering the cage to the theme music of "2001: A Space Odyssey". But, don't shed a tear for "The Beast", who drops to 9-3-1, nor raise your hopes that the cartoon will end. Sapp has lost before and reportedly has a fight waiting for him 15 March in Dream's inaugural promotion in Japan.  He's still a draw in the East. "The Beast" will live on. Fast-rising middleweight Cory Devela notched a big name on his belt when "Diesel" Joe Riggs was forced to submit at 1:22 of the first round after a judo throw caused an injury in Riggs's back. Devela raises his record to 8-1, while Riggs falls to 27-10. There's been no word on the nature or severity of Riggs's back injury, but Riggs was forced off a WEC card last year due to a back injury. "GameBred" lightweight Jorge Masvidal continued his seven-fight streak with a unanimous decision over 9-3-1 Ryan Healy. Masvidal has posted wins versus Yves Edwards, Nuri Shakir, and Joe Lauzon and seems ready to step-up in competition. Former UFC Heavyweight Champion "Mo" Maurice Smith welcomed veteran kickboxing star "The Jet" Rick Roufus to MMA, submitting the K-1 fighter in an armlock at 1:53 of the first round. On the undercard, Washington welterweight "Fast" Eddy Ellis pulled even at 14-14-1 with a unanimous decision versus "Red Nose" Steve Berger.
