Believe it or not, James Toney is back in the news again. After receiving a gargantuan amount of press leading up to his UFC 118 fight with Randy Couture, Toney may as well have fallen off the face of the earth following his lightning-fast loss to the UFC legend and former two-division champion. It was revealed a while back that Toney would love to come back to MMA if given the chance and the right opponent, and recently, the controversial boxing champion has set his sights squarely on Quinton Jackson. Not only did Toney call out “Rampage” in a new, controversial interview (is any James Toney interview not controversial?), he even called him an “Uncle Tom”. ...
He’s one of the most dominant, controversial, highest-paid, notorious, and (in my humble opinion) misunderstood pro boxers of all time. There is only one Mike Tyson, and “Iron” Mike has been an unabashed fan of Mixed Martial Arts for quite some time. In fact, Tyson is scheduled to appear as a guest on an upcoming episode of “The Ultimate Fighter”. In a recent interviewer with The Canadian Press, the famed former boxing champion took on the controversial subject of fellow former pro boxer James Toney trying (and utterly failing) at competing in Mixed Martial Arts. ...
In the pro boxing vs. MMA debate, one of the last rallying cries of the pro-boxing anti-MMA crowd is “well, MMA fighters are too scared to step into a boxing ring with pro boxers”. Now that James Toney has once again proven that one-dimensional athletes will never hold up to true Mixed Martial Artists in an MMA fight, no matter how skilled they are in that one dimension, many were left wondering what would happen if the opposite was put into effect and a great MMA fighter met a great boxer in a boxing ring. The closest we’ll likely ever get to that, since UFC President Dana White has come down strongly against letting his top fighters fight in a boxing ring, will be a boxing match pitting former UFC and Elite XC fighter Kimbo Slice, who recently transitioned from MMA to boxing after a lackluster MMA career, against James Toney. Still, that hasn’t stopped one fighter from stepping up to the plate and saying that he’ll answer the challenge, as Vitor Belfort of all people recently said that he would agree to face James Toney in a boxing ring. ...
James Toney's introduction into MMA was a true learning process. His teacher, ufc Hall of Famer and former 5-time champion Randy Couture, taught him all too well. The boxing legend learned two things. 1)Just because you submitted Muhammed Lawal, the former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, does not give you a green card into a forgein land. 2)Never, under any circumstances, compete in mixed martial arts, again. But Toney took more than a valuable lesson away from his 3-plus minute drubbing against the MMA legend--he took home a 6-figure check to take to the bank. ...
Even before it was announced that former street brawler and YouTube sensation Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson would be making the transition to pro boxing after a less-than-stellar run in MMA, people were talking about a match between Kimbo Slice and aging pro boxer turned failed MMA star James Toney. In Toney’s initial media onslaught where he called out multiple people and proclaimed that he could easily take them out in an MMA fight, Slice was at the top of his list. Toney even went as far as nicknaming Slice “Simba”. In a recent appearance on the MMA Hour, Slice revealed that he wouldn’t be opposed to a fight with Toney. I’m generally in favor of this match, although I think there are both positives and negatives to how soon this fight is booked. ...
Well, that sure was surprising wasn’t it? UFC 118 was filled with awesome fights, big winners, and big losers. From Nate Diaz choking out Marcus Davis to James Toney getting choked out by Randy Couture, UFC 118 lived up to just about all of its potential. Looking forward, here’s what I think is next for some of the big winners, and even some of the big losers, of UFC 118: “Edgar vs. Penn 2”. ...
Well, after all the hype, the back-and-forth war of words, the intense debate, everything that could possibly ever happen leading up to a historic fight…Randy Couture has beaten James Toney. He did it fast, he did it furiously, and he came out more aggressively than I think anyone would have ever thought he would. James Toney’s first MMA fight didn’t make it out of the first round, it didn’t even make it out of the fourth minute. So I’m pretty sure I’ll be inundated by a non-stop verbal assault by...well, by pretty much everybody, due to my infamous article “Facing the Inevitable: James Toney Will Knock Out Randy Couture”. And you know what, fans and friends? I don’t regret picking James Toney for a second. ...
For quite a whole lot of reasons, the upcoming UFC 118 event is quickly becoming the can’t-miss event of the latter half of 2010. Whether it’s James Toney vs. Randy Couture, Frankie Edgar vs. BJ Penn, or even Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard, UFC 118 sounds like a dream-card on paper. However, there’s one UFC 118 fight that I’ve seen a definitive lack of coverage on, and for the life of me, I can’t tell why. It’s virtually vanished from the popular press, but I’m really looking forward to the match-up between Marcus Davis and Nate Diaz. ...
There is little doubt about how determined BJ Penn will be this Saturday night at UFC 118 when he seeks revenge against lightweight champion Frankie Edgar who took his title belt last spring in Abu Dhabi. His focus will be first to engage more, as he told the media last week, and then on finishing, an attribute he feels not enough young MMA fighters emphasize and possibly a lightly veiled dig at Edgar for his style of movement and distance in the first fight. However, while waiting for his turn in the locker room at the Boston Garden, don’t be surprised if UFC cameras catch ‘The Prodigy’ eyeing the debut of James Toney who bravely makes his MMA start against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture. ...
UFC Hall of Famer and budding actor Randy Couture, might not have made it quite yet as an actor, but he certainly has a cushion now. The former light heavyweight and heavyweight champion, who made his way from straight to dvd-film to silver screen, has it hit big with Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables", which opened this past weekend. ...
Every UFC event answers many questions about fighters and rankings, yet almost always stirs up more questions about where the sport is headed. Here are a few of my takeaways and thoughts per the fights last Saturday and UFC issues at large. ...
I along with many other people scoffed and scorned when news broke that the UFC had signed aging pro boxer James “Lights Out” Toney to a fight with UFC legend and former Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture. My strongest initial reaction consisted of little more than “Randy Couture + Takedowns = Win”. That belief, that Couture’s wrestling will be far too much for James Toney to handle, seems to be the one almost everyone is betting on. But now that their showdown is little more than a month away, I find myself leaning towards “Lights Out” more and more. ...
This weeks installment of "Weekly Jab" brings you news on the new UFC light heavyweight champion, a former NFL football player and one of the most recognizable names in the sport. ...
Since heavyweight boxing champion “Lights Out” James Toney (0-0) signed to fight in the UFC, high profile heavyweights have stepped up to welcome Toney into the Octagon. Among those heavyweights are The Ultimate Fighter 10 champion “Big Country” Roy Nelson (15-4) and former UFC champion “The Natural” Randy Couture (18-10). But, that reminds me of a story my friend's dad - good ol' Paul Heck - told me years ago. He's a Vietnam veteran and told us how he enlisted to go to Vietnam. They'd ask incoming soldiers to rank the top three destinations they would like to be stationed. Seventeen-years old and seemingly invincible, Mr. Heck scribbled Vietnam atop his list. He wanted to fight! But, he didn't realize then that the military never sent soldiers to Vietnam if they listed Vietnam as their top choice. The military figured that if you wanted to go to Vietnam you either had a death wish or would be too reckless in battle. They wanted soldiers in Vietnam who wanted to come home alive. So, Mr. Heck was stationed in The Philippines and served honorably. ...
"I'd rather be fighting for the belt and be done with it," The Ultimate Fighter 10 champion “Big Country” Roy Nelson (15-4) told MMA Weekly Radio after knocking out 6'11" heavyweight prospect “Skyscraper” Stefan Struve (23-4) in 39 seconds at UFC’s Ultimate Fight Night 21 in Charlotte March 31. ...
Since the signing of one time heavyweight boxing champ James Toney (0-0) rumors have been swirling about his potential opponent. The one fighter talked about the most was Kimbo Slice (4-1) and we now that he will not be fighting James Toney anytime soon. ...
It was announced that heavyweight boxing champion “Lights Out” James Toney (0-0) has signed a five-fight deal with the UFC. The latest is that the contract is the first ever non-exclusive contract that the UFC has done. The signing of Toney can be looked at as a freak show, a shot to beat Strikeforce to the punch or a vehicle to prove that MMA is greater than boxing but no matter how you view it the important question is what will this do for the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). ...
UFC President Dana White has signed heavyweight boxing champion "Lights Out" James Toney (0-0) to a multi-fight agreement to fight mixed martial arts in the UFC, according to Five Ounces of Pain. ...
The Ultimate Fighter 10 champion “Big Country” Roy Nelson (14-4) and 6' 11" heavyweight prospect “SkySkraper” Stefan Struve (23-3) will matchup at UFC Fight Night 21 in Charlotte March 31, according to MMA Junkie. ...
