According to Manager: King Mo out for up to 9 Months

Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion King Mo, is in a new position that he has yet to endure in his young MMA career--he lost his first fight as a professional, in somewhat devastating fashion. Although not unaccustomed to losing, as he has lost several--though not many--matches in is long and storied wrestling career, that spans from collegiate wrestling to competition overseas. ...

Strikeforce: “Houston” Crowns New Champions, Team Black House Reigns Supreme

Strikeforce: “Houston” has now drawn to a close, and it made for quite an eventful night of fights. But the biggest story to come out of “Houston” had to have been the crowning of two Brazilian champions, both of whom train in the prestigious Black House gym, home to such famous fighters as Lyoto Machida, the Nogueira brothers (Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira), Junior Dos Santos, and Anderson Silva. For “Houston”, Black House was represented by Ronaldo Souza in a fight to crown a new Strikeforce Middleweight Champion after the title had been vacated due to former champion Jake Shields parting ways with the company, and also by Rafael Cavalcante in the first defense of Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal’s belt. Both fights were back-and-forth wars of non-stop action that fully proved the heart, dedication, determination, and skills of both “Jacare” and “Feijao”. Here’s how it all broke down. ...

Strikeforce "Houston" Weigh-Ins Official: Several Fighters Miss the Mark, but No Fights Were Cancelled

Today marked the official weigh-ins for the upcoming Strikeforce: "Houston" event, scheduled for August 20, 2010 from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. The event features controversial Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Muhammed Lawal, better known as “King Mo”, in his first defense of the championship he won after beating the highly-regarded Gegard Mousasi to win the belt. The co-main event will also be a championship affair, as feared submission wizard (his nickname, “Jacare”, means Alligator) Ronaldo Souza takes on 12-2 Tim Kennedy for the vacant Middleweight Championship, which was rendered vacant when former champion Jake Shields promptly left the promotion and signed with the UFC after defeating new Strikeforce signee and MMA legend, Dan Henderson. The “Houston” weigh-ins weren’t immune to a bit of controversy, as several fighters failed to make weight. Here’s how it all broke down. ...

Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Muhammed "King Mo" Lawal Cordially Invites You to Go **** Yourself

Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal has a lot to be happy for nowadays. He’s been in the professional MMA game for less than two years, and he’s already got a pretty big championship to call his own. To get the belt he beat former Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Gegard Mousasi, who was known to his fans as both “the future of Mixed Martial Arts” and “the next Fedor Emelianenko”. Mo he beat him pretty convincingly, too: he took “The Dreamcatcher” to the mat at will and controlled him with some big ground and pound. Mo is set to make the first defense of his Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Championship on August 21, when he takes on Rafael Cavalcante. Even with such a brief career as a professional Mixed Martial Artist, “King Mo” is already beginning to rub some fans the wrong way with his brash, cocky attitude. In a recent interview, he came right out and said “Some [fans] are cool, some are idiots. They're fans- they don't know what the **** they are talking about. That’s why I’ll say it again: **** the fans. A lot of them ain't educated. They're just bandwagon jumpers." While I’m not one to shy away from some good trash-talking, King Mo has gone a little too far. ...

DREAM 15: Gegard Mousasi Taps Jake O'Brien
DREAM 15: Gegard Mousasi Taps Jake O'Brien

Former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion “Dreamcatcher” Gegard Mousasi (29-3-1) effortlessly disposed of former UFC 205er "Irish” Jake O’Brien (13-4) in 31 seconds at DREAM.15 in Saitama Saturday.
At the bell, a pudgy O'Brien immediately shot for a double-leg takedown, forcing Mousasi to the ropes.  Mousasi defended, but O'Brien transitioned to a single-leg and eventually dragged Mousasi to the mat.
O'Brien's corner shouted, "Watch the guillotine."
And, as Mousasi stood back to his feet, he locked up that exact technique and forced O'Brien to tap out in a standing guillotine.
After barely breaking a sweat, Mousasi announced to the crowd, "I'll return to fight for the light heavyweight title.  Thank you for coming."
Fighting in Japan has always been sentimental for Mousasi, symbolized by wearing a pure white T-shirt on his walk to the ring in an era when gaudy T's have become a feature of the sport of MMA.

Strikeforce Moving Forward
Strikeforce Moving Forward

With the hype train behind Fedor Emelianenko now derailed, many are left wondering what happens not only to strikeforce’s Heavyweight division, but where Strikeforce as a whole goes from here. Some call Strikeforce a breeding ground for UFC cast-offs, while followers of the San Jose-based promotion are quick to point out that Strikeforce contains world-caliber champions and aspiring newcomers, resulting in fight cards that are a hit more often than not. Going forward, here’s what I think will be the keys to success for Strikeforce. ...

“King Mo” Muhammed Lawal (7-0) won a five-round unanimous decision over “Dreamcatcher” Gegard Mousasi (25-3-1) for the Strikeforce light heavyweight title in Nashville Saturday night by scores of 49-45.  Fighters.com scored the fight exactly the same.
The former champion, Mousasi, never lost control of the fight, but never took control either as Lawal scored takedowns at will.  Mousasi merely clammed up and accepted the position on his back.
Lawal and Mousasi probably broke even on the mat, Lawal scoring lunging shots through Mousasi's full guard and Mousasi countering with upkicks and hammerfists that closed Lawal's left eye by round three.
But Lawal controlled the fight from the top on the ground and, surprisingly, gave up nothing to Mousasi, a trained boxer and kickboxer, during the stand-up exchanges.
