Without hyperbole, UFC 132 “Cruz vs. Faber” was one of the best MMA events I’ve seen in 2011, and perhaps even in the last few years. We had so many interesting fights, so many entertaining all-out wars, so many dramatic and unexpected finishes. Now once again it’s time to ask: what’s next? What does the future hold after Dominick Cruz beat the only man that ever defeated him, after Wanderlei Silva was destroyed by Chris Leben, after Tito Ortiz finally got another win in the Octagon? For five rounds, Cruz coasted a seemingly easy, but hard fought decision victory over the always tough Scott Jorgensen. With his wrestling and boxing credentials on full display, Dominick, did everything short of finishing the fight in order to wow the crowd at the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Ariz. After this event, the promotion as we know it will no longer exist, and all we’ll be left with is fond memories of a ridiculously underrated MMA organization. It’s going to be the end of an era… one of the best in recent history, if you want my opinion. The World Extreme Cagefighting promotion will look to end its stellar 2010 run with WEC 53: “Henderson vs. Pettis”, scheduled for December 16 at the Jobing.com Arena in Glendale, Arizona. Former bantamweight champion, Brian Bowles, was expected to make his return to the cage at wec 52 in November, in hopes to bounce back from a disappointing loss to current title-holder Dominick Cruz at WEC 47. The once undefeated fighter tore his way to a title shot after dispatching some of the best in his weight class, in Will Ribeiro, Damacio Page and Marcos Galvao, en route to a title shot against then champion, Miguel Torres. Seemingly unbeatable, the Georgia boy made quick work of the mullet-wonder with a swift first round knockout, cementing his spot as the best bantamweight in the world--though his glory and accolades didn't hold up for all that long. ...

With the addition of just one more match, wec 53 has gone from a card I was eagerly looking forward to, to a card that may steal an “Event of the Year” award or two. Even with the upcoming WEC 51: “Aldo vs. Gamburyan” card creeping closer and closer, I’m honestly looking forward to this card more. I reported recently that Anthony Pettis would be taking on Ben Henderson in what should be a fantastic defense of “Bendo’s” Lightweight Championship, and it’s now been confirmed that Dominick Cruz will be taking on Scott Jorgensen as well, with the WEC Bantamweight Championship on the line. ...

When it comes to the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion, all eyes are rightfully on the upcoming WEC 51 show. Featuring such stars as Jose Aldo, Manvel Gamburyan, Jamie Varner, Donald Cerrone, Miguel Torres, Chan Sung Jung, and Leonard Garcia, WEC 51 is shaping up to be another fantastic event in a year filled to the brim with fantastic WEC events. Looking further into the future, WEC 52 recently received a big boost when it was announced that both former WEC Featherweight Champion Urijah Faber and former WEC Bantamweight Champion Brian Bowles would be making their returns to the famous blue cage at WEC 52. ...

As the main event of WEC 50 drew near, it seemed like it was time for Joseph Benavidez to shine. He had never looked better in the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion. His base salary as a challenger was higher than the base salary of the defending champion. Perhaps most importantly, Benavidez was coming off of the biggest win of his career, having become the only man to ever submit former division kingpin Miguel Torres. With his improving skills and the confidence gained from the Torres fight, Benavidez seemed primed to avenge the only loss on his professional MMA record and win the WEC Bantamweight Championship in the process. But new champion Dominick Cruz had other plans, and now that Cruz has his first win as champion under his belt, I’m left wondering if we’ve entered a new era in the WEC Bantamweight division. ...
