Hello once more fans and friends and welcome to another new edition of “Best of the Rest”! I really enjoy taking the time to give my detailed thoughts on a show after watching it, but after the serious discussion and debate I’ll raise in topics like “Top 5 Best Moments” and “Best Performance of the Night”, I think it’d be nice to have a semi-serious, occasionally tongue-in-cheek topic where I give out some other “awards”. It’s all in good fun, although I’ll raise a serious point occasionally. So let’s dive right into this latest edition, now featuring Strikeforce: “Overeem vs. Werdum”. ...
Strikeforce “Overeem vs. Werdum” was an interesting event dominated almost completely by Heavyweight fighters. We saw some good fights, some interesting finishes, and a main event that honestly fell far short of expectations. Now once again it’s time to ask: what’s next? What does the future hold now that the Quarterfinals of the Strikeforce World Heavyweight Grand Prix are over? Here’s my answer to just that: a new edition of my “What’s Next for the Winners and Losers” series of articles, now featuring Strikeforce “Overeem vs. Werdum”. ...
After a month-long hiatus, upstart promotion turned Zuffa-owned Strikeforce returned last night with its “Overeem vs. Werdum” event. In a night that saw many interesting fights, fans got to see big submissions, tough three-round wars, and a very bizarre performance in the main event. Here are the full results as well as some early commentary on Strikeforce: “Overeem vs. Werdum”. ...
Today, June 18, 2011, Strikeforce will hold its highly-anticipated “Overeem vs. Werdum” event, featuring the final two match-ups of the opening round of Strikeforce’s World Heavyweight Grand Prix. Also, the card features hot prospects like Daniel Cormier, grizzled veterans like Jeff Monson, and former title challengers like KJ Noons. Still, some fans may be asking themselves: what are the best reasons to check out this card? Here’s my answer to just that: 5 reasons to watch “Overeem vs. Werdum”. ...
We’re now only a few days away from Strikeforce's “Overeem vs. Werdum” event. In the main event, Strikeforce Heavyweight Champion Alistair Overeem will step into the cage against Fabricio Werdum. The co-main event will also be an interesting match-up, as former UFC Heavyweight Champion Josh Barnett takes on Brett Rogers. As is customary, here is my official “picks and predictions” post (covering who I think will win and why), now featuring Strikeforce: “Overeem vs. Werdum”. ...

Hello once more fans and friends, it’s now time for a new addition to my “A Closer Look” series. Right now I’m focusing on strikeforce’s upcoming and highly-anticipated “Overeem vs. Werdum” event, giving a fight-by-fight breakdown of all the major fighters, what they bring to the table, and whether or not I see them winning. For part one of the series, click here. Now it’s time to focus on another major Heavyweight tilt, as Daniel Cormier takes on Jeff Monson. ...
Recently, it was announced that longtime MMA veteran Jeff Monson, who once challenged for the UFC Heavyweight Championship, had finally landed himself in another major-level promotion. When Monson makes his Strikeforce debut on June 18, 2011 as part of Strikeforce’s “Overeem vs. Werdum” event, he’ll be stepping into the cage against hot prospect Daniel Cormier, who made his professional debut in Strikeforce and currently holds a perfect 7-0 record. So, will this fight be a passing of the torch, or will Monson breathe new life into his career? Read on for my early thoughts about this bout and both fighters. ...
A heavyweight match-up has been updated for the upcoming Strikeforce show. Daniel Cormier, the two-time Olympian was originally scheduled to meet with fellow budding prospect Shane Del Rosario at the June 18th event, however a car accident has since sidelined the Team Oyama product for the foreseeable future. The bout was scrapped, though officials have since been able to find a more than suitable replacement for Del Rosario as Strikeforce has now reportedly signed UFC veteran Jeff Monson and he will now be taking on Cormier at the upcoming event. ...
Whenever a major event or a big show is on the verge of coming to fruition, it becomes increasingly easier to stir the hornet’s nest. Tensions are high and opinions become fact, with many fans drawing their line in the sand and arguing back and forth over who will win and why. In particular, many fans are debating which major-level MMA promotion has the better Heavyweight division now that strikeforce’s Heavyweight Grand Prix is about to get underway while ufc Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez sits on the injured list. Rising Strikeforce Heavyweight Daniel Cormier recently chimed in with his opinion, and three guesses as to which side of this debate Cormier stands on. Here are all the details. ...
Well-financed, upstart MMA organizations tend to chase the UFC by trying to lure established stars with wads of money. Ask EliteXC, who had more problems than just that, and Affliction. They'll both tell you that method doesn't work. Thankfully, Strikeforce has been different since day one. CEO Scott Coker and the gang started off as a San Jose regional show, mostly bringing in names from that area. Then, of course, came the Showtime and CBS deals, which led to some of that big name fighter luring- Fedor Emelianenko, anyone? But after watching Friday night's Strikeforce Challengers 13 event, it became obvious that they have some pretty impressive up and coming talent. Tyron Woodley, Daniel Cormier, Ovince St. Preux, and Amanda Nunes, for example. A few years from now, if Strikeforce is able to keep most of these fighters, watch out; ...
Strikeforce held its “Challengers 13” event last night, and it was an interesting night of fights that, in the “Challengers” tradition, showcased a wide array of new and emerging talent. Although I did find a few bouts underwhelming, looking towards the future, it’s clear that some big stars are on their way. Several of Strikeforce’s young guns notched victories at the event, and in a tradition of my own, here’s the latest edition of “What’s Next for the Winners and Losers”, featuring Strikeforce “Challengers 13”. ...
The thirteenth edition of the “Strikeforce Challengers” series of shows is now a thing of the past, and the event was well worth watching despite falling a bit short of my loftiest expectations. The show featured several Strikeforce young guns, all of which recorded some impressive victories, the highlight of which saw Amanda Nunes outright steal the show. Here are the full results as well as some early commentary on Strikeforce: “Challengers 13”. ...
It seems that every other MMA fighter is an All American wrestler. Then again, college wrestling is the most obvious farm system for professional MMA. However, one fighter may have a wrestling pedigree that is unrivaled across the sport. Daniel Cormier, who fights Devin Cole tonight co-headlining the Strikeforce Challengers card in Nashville, TN brings a monumental wrestling history with him every time he steps into the ring. Cormier was a three time Louisiana wrestling state champion in high school and NCAA Championships runner-up at Oklahoma State. Impressive, but Cormier was just getting started. He was the USA national champion in 2005-2007. Cormier finished fourth on in the 2004 Olympics and was named captain of the 2008 USA wrestling team. So, there are wrestling credentials and then there is Daniel Cormier’s wrestling credentials. He will bring all that history with him tonight as he faces Cole, another strong wrestler. ...
Three days from now Strikeforce will look to hold its “Challengers 13” event, with a five-fight main card being broadcast live on Showtime. The event features a cast of young guns that many think will soon become Strikeforce standouts: Tyron Woodley, Ovince St. Preux, Daniel Cormier, and more. As is customary, here’s another edition of “Picks and Predictions”, this time featuring Strikeforce “Challengers 13”. ...

Although the shows usually only make waves in certain circles, Strikeforce is set to hold its thirteenth “Challengers” event a little over a week from now, on January 7. Most MMA fans are focused on this week’s double-stuffed weekend, which will see the DREAM/K-1 super-show “DYNAMITE!! 2010” go down on New Year’s Eve, with UFC 125: “Resolution” airing live on Pay-Per-View the very next day. And while I too am pumped for the weekend’s festivities, I’m also very interested for “Strikeforce Challengers 13”. Don’t believe me? Wondering why? Here are five early reasons to be excited for the show. ...
As the UFC continues to grow and evolve, it seems like we see a new, young, exciting and dominant can’t-miss prospect emerge on a per-month basis. While the UFC continues to see an influx of young and ridiculously-talented newcomers, strikeforce may soon be catching up. In terms of hot prospects, Daniel Cormier is practically scorching. And Strikeforce seems ready to pull the trigger on him, as it’s recently been announced that the American Kickboxing Academy product will soon be headlining a Strikeforce card. Here are all the details. ...
Two-time Olympian Daniel Cormier continues to impress. One of the newest additions to the American Kickboxing Academy stable, Cormier, a decorated wrestler whom was dubbed the team captain of the 2008 United States Olympic team, has improved his undefeated record to 6-0 in his young mixed martial arts career. Having returned to Australia just two days ago in order to defend his heavyweight title under the Xtreme MMA banner, Cormier made quick work of yet another opponent. ...
Today marked the official weigh-ins for the upcoming Strikeforce: "Houston" event, scheduled for August 20, 2010 from the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. The event features controversial Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Champion Muhammed Lawal, better known as “King Mo”, in his first defense of the championship he won after beating the highly-regarded Gegard Mousasi to win the belt. The co-main event will also be a championship affair, as feared submission wizard (his nickname, “Jacare”, means Alligator) Ronaldo Souza takes on 12-2 Tim Kennedy for the vacant Middleweight Championship, which was rendered vacant when former champion Jake Shields promptly left the promotion and signed with the UFC after defeating new Strikeforce signee and MMA legend, Dan Henderson. The “Houston” weigh-ins weren’t immune to a bit of controversy, as several fighters failed to make weight. Here’s how it all broke down. ...
The San Jose based promotion, Strikeforce, has recently put out a press release, declaring the full fight card, including a finalized preliminary card, for the August 21st show, which will be in Houston, Texas. The card features a light heavyweight title fight against newly crowned champion "King Mo" Lawal against top contender Rafael "Feijao", out of Team Blackhouse, who trains alongside the likes of the Nogueria brothers, Anderson Silva, and Junior dos Santos. ...
Wrestling Olympian and American Kickboxing Academy product, Daniel Cormier has returned from Australia, on the heels of his third win in mixed martial arts. Traveling to the land down under, Cormier made his third mixed martial arts appearance when he took on native Aussie, Lucas Browne. A true heavyweight, who stood at a staggering 6'6 and weighed in at the limit of 265 pounds, Cormier put his wrestling to the test, taking down his much larger opponent, before opening up a ground and pound assault that would halt the contest, inside of the first round. ...
The Pit middleweight Tim Kennedy (13-2) tapped out Zak Cummings (10-1) in a north-south choke at 2:43 of round two at Strikeforce Challenger Series 3 in Tulsa Friday night. Kennedy was spectacular! In round two, Kennedy hopped into a standing guillotine attempt, slipped out of easily by Cummings. Kennedy put Cummings against the cage, but Cummings pushed clear, falling neatly into another choke. Cumming rolled free, but Kennedy transitioned quickly into the final choke, forcing the tap out. ...
Main event middleweights Timothy Kennedy (11-2) and Zac Cummings (10-0) both weighed-in at the 186-pound limit Thursday for their exciting matchup of prospects at Strikeforce Challengers 3 in Tulsa Friday night. ...
Two-time United States Olympic wrestler Daniel Cormier (0-0) will make his mixed martial arts debut at Strikeforce Challengers 3 in Tulsa 25 September, Strikeforce announced Wednesday. Strikeforce is searching for a heavyweight opponent to haze Cormier into the world's most demanding athletic endeavor after what will be just one month of dedicated MMA training at American Kickboxing Academy in San Jose for Cormier. Cormier was a bronze medalist at the 2007 Pan American games and missed medaling at the 2004 Olympics by a single wrestling match, coming in fourth. At the 2008 Olympics, Cormier dehydrated himself into renal failure trying to make the 211.5 pound weight limit and was scratched from the Games. ...
