It’s that time again: with another month set to kick off, here’s the latest “Sneak Peek”! Alongside my monthly “Top 5 Most Anticipated Fights” post, “Sneak Peek” is a once-a-month post giving fans a look at what they can expect as we’re about to start another month of MMA action. “Sneak Peek” will give fans a quick synopsis of all the major MMA cards going down in any particular month, along with some early commentary on them. So let’s dive right with today’s edition, covering the month of August 2011. ...
And once again it’s time for a “Best Performance of the Night” award, fans and friends. MMA fans were given a bit of a treat last week with Strikeforce on Friday and Bellator on Saturday. Both events were solid, with several interesting finishes. At Bellator 47, it would be the other fights that would end up impressing me the most rather than the semi-final “Summer Series” fights that I was eagerly anticipating. And the man that impressed me the most was Neil Grove, who battled back from the brink to score a brilliant TKO victory. Here’s why that performance deserves this award. ...
Bellator 47 was a solid event through and through, with several entertaining finishes and a few hard-fought wars of attrition. The finals of the Bellator “Summer Series” Featherweight tournament were decided at Bellator 47, and several other fighters shined in non-tournament bouts. But which stars shined brightest, and what moments will fans be talking about in the following weeks? Here’s my take on the matter: my top 5 best moments of Bellator 47. ...
Overall, Bellator 47 was a solid event in the promotion’s budding relationship with the MTV2 network. Now once again it’s time to ask: what’s next? What does the future hold after both Marlon Sandro and Pat Curran punched their ticket to the finals of the “Summer Series” Featherweight Tournament? Here’s my answer to just that: a new edition of my “What’s Next for the Winners and Losers” series of articles, now featuring Bellator 47. ...
The Bellator Fighting Championships promotion returned from a one-month hiatus yesterday with its “Bellator 47” event, featuring both semi-final fights in their “Summer Series” Featherweight Tournament. Unfortunately, both of those fights felt a little flat and frankly failed to live up to expectations. However, the good news is that Bellator 47 saw some pretty crazy finishes in the lead-up to those two fights. Here are the full results as well as some early commentary on Bellator 47. ...
We’re now only a days away from Bellator 47, which takes place during this weekend’s miniature “Perfect Storm” that sees Strikeforce on Friday and Bellator on Saturday. This event sees both semi-final fights of Bellator’s current Featherweight Tournament, featuring four of the best Featherweights in Bellator. As is customary, here is my official “picks and predictions” post (covering who I think will win and why), now featuring Bellator 47. ...
On January 23, 2011, Bellator will hold its highly-anticipated “Bellator 47” event, featuring both semi-final fights of their special “Summer Series” Featherweight Tournament. In addition to four top Featherweights battling it out to get one step closer to a shot at a championship, Bellator 47 will also feature the Bellator debut of noted WEC and IFL veteran Chris Horodecki. Still, some fans may be asking themselves: what are the best reasons to check out this card? Here’s my answer to just that: 5 reasons to watch Bellator 47. ...
MMA fans are in for a bit of a miniature “Perfect Storm” weekend, with both Strikeforce and Bellator putting out solid-looking shows this weekend. While Friday fight fans will be treated to Strikeforce’s “Challengers 17” event, the MTV2 crowd gets Bellator 47 live on Saturday. Once again, here’s a new edition of “Crash Course” designed to give you all the details on everything you need to know heading into this event. Let’s get started. ...
Ever since it was announced that Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney was interested in Nate Marquardt, there’s been a bit of a debate on whether or not Bellator should really sign the former UFC Middleweight Championship contender that quickly became the central point of one of the biggest MMA controversies of the year. Multiple Bellator fighters, including Bellator Middleweight Champion Hector Lombard, have vocally called out Marquardt. However, it now appears that Bellator won’t be able to sign Nate “The Great” after all. Here are all the details. ...
Ever since Nate Marquardt’s highly-published falling-out with the UFC, every fan of Nate “The Great” has been wondering where the veteran fighter will next call home. Strikeforce is obviously not an option due to it being owned by Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC. Upstart promotion Bellator FC seemed like the most logical step, although I openly wondered if Bellator would be able to afford the services of Marquardt. It now appears that they at least want to try: a new report says that Bellator will wait until Marquardt gets his licensing issues straightened out, but that the promotion is definitely interested in the former UFC Middleweight Championship contender. Here are all the details. ...
Hello again fans and friends, and welcome to the start of a new once-a-month series! With how insanely stuffed full of good MMA action June 2011 was, I figured it would only be suitable to start a “Top 5 Fights of the Month” post with June as the inaugural month. Not only will this topic give readers the chance to look back and discuss all the best moments of the previous month, it’ll also be a way for me to one day select a “Fight of the Year” by facing off the individual “Fight of the Month” winners against each other. So, with all that said, let’s take a look at the five best fights of June 2011. ...
It’s that time again, fans and friends. A new month will soon be upon us, which means all-new fights and much-anticipated epic encounters. Near the start of every month I’ll be counting down the five fights I’m looking forward to the most, and why I’m looking forward to them. This is “Top 5 Most Anticipated Fights of July 2011”. Let’s get started. ...
Hello once more fans and friends and welcome back to “Sneak Peek”! Alongside my monthly “Top 5 Most Anticipated Fights” post, “Sneak Peek” is a once-a-month post giving fans a look at what they can expect as we’re about to start another month of MMA action. “Sneak Peek” will give fans a quick synopsis of all the major MMA cards going down in any particular month. So let’s dive right in with today’s edition, covering the month of July 2011. ...
Last week, we were treated to what I dubbed “The Perfect Storm”. We had “Strikeforce Challengers 16” on Friday, Bellator 46 on Saturday, and “UFC on Versus 4” on Sunday. It was a weekend filled with dramatic stoppages, dozens of free fights, and big names across three promotions. So who won the weekend? Which event was, for lack of a better term, the “pound-for-pound” best? Read on as I explore what I liked and disliked about all three events, and also why I’m giving the nod to Bellator despite a great “UFC on Versus 4” event. ...
Without hyperbole, Bellator 46 was one of the best events I’ve seen in my short history with Bellator FC. We saw dramatic finishes, amazing submissions, thrilling KO’s, and more. It may have been on the obscure MTV2 network, but you really can’t do much better than five free fights with four ending in stoppages. Now it’s time to ask once again: what’s next for the winners and losers? ...
Last night, upstart promotion Bellator FC took to the airwaves for the first time since the end of their fourth season. This event was the first in Bellator’s “Summer Series”, and before I say the following, I’d like to let everyone know that you should prepare yourself for a doozy of a statement, fans and friends. Here it is: with the start of their “Summer Series”, Bellator FC has set the benchmark for summer 2011. This show was that good. In fact, it was one of the best Bellator shows I’ve ever seen. Here are the full results as well as some early commentary for Bellator 46. ...
On June 25, 2011, upstart promotion Bellator FC will holds its forty-sixth event, featuring their return to the MTV2 network and the start of their “Summer Series”. The “Summer Series” centers around an eight-man Featherweight tournament with some of Bellator’s biggest names and some of its hottest prospects. The first round gets underway at Bellator 46, but still, some fans may be asking themselves: what are the best reasons to check out this card? Here’s my answer to just that: 5 reasons to watch Bellator 46. ...
We’re now only a few days away from Bellator 46. Bellator’s return to MTV2 after a bit of a hiatus will mark the beginning of a new “Summer Series”, featuring an eight-man Featherweight tournament. All four opening-round bouts of that tournament take place at Bellator 46, with notable names like Pat Curran, Marlon Sandro, and Ronnie Mann filling the card. As is customary, here is my official “picks and predictions” post (covering who I think will win and why), now featuring Bellator 46. ...
Hello once more fans and friends and welcome to the latest edition of “Crash Course”. Today marks another entry into “Crash Course” due to a very special occasion: for this week and this week only, MMA fans will be treated to three separate MMA events on three separate days, promoted by three separate companies (even though Strikeforce now belongs to the UFC, their rosters remain separate at this time). So let’s dive right into it with today’s edition, featuring Bellator 46. ...
In mere hours, strikeforce is set to present “Overeem vs. Werdum”. It’s an event that I’ve spoken about at length, and one that I’m incredibly excited for. In terms of pure excitement, the only thing that really comes close is the trifecta of shows planned for next week. You read that right, fans and friends: throughout next week, three major MMA promotions will hold three major MMA events on three separate days. Instead of two shows going head-to-head and forcing viewers to choose which one to watch and which one to skip or record or flip to occasionally, we’ll be getting a “perfect storm” of good MMA. Here are some early details on all three major shows planned for next week. ...
There have been a huge amount of rumors floating around the internet now that Spike TV and the UFC are poised to end their relationship after so many years. One very popular rumor is that Spike TV is already preparing for life without the UFC: they’ve got the upstart Bellator promotion square in their sites. Luckily for Spike, they’re owned by the same people that own the MTV2 network (the current home of Bellator FC), so this rumor does have some degree of truth and probability. But what would it mean to have Bellator on Spike TV? Here are my thoughts on just that. ...
It’s that time once again, fans and friends. A new month is upon us, and it’s time for my pair of once-a-month posts. First up we have “Sneak Peek”, where I give a quick rundown of all the major MMA cards planned for this month. And thankfully, June looks to emphatically break the “Spring Slump” that saw the UFC and Strikeforce only put forth a handful of events. So let’s dive right into a full preview of what should be an awesome month of MMA action. ...
I’ve talked about Bellator for some time now, but with the recent end of their fourth season, I’ll have to wait about a month before I get more Bellator. However, I can say that it definitely looks like I’ll be getting more Bellator for the foreseeable future: after weeks of up-and-down ratings, Bellator’s season four has found some great stability in recent weeks. And with the ratings of Bellator 45 now in, it’s very clear that Bellator is finally clicking with the MTV2 audience. Here are all the details. ...
It’s that time once again, fans and friends. Another major MMA event has come and gone, and it’s time for my unofficial “Best Performance of the Night” award. And while Bellator 45 was a good event, one fighter’s performance stood out very clearly from all the rest. Here’s why Christian M’Pumbu took home “Best Performance of the Night” for his thrilling three-round performance against Richard Hale. ...
Although it only featured three fights, Bellator 45 had a little something for everybody. We saw not one but two three-round hard-fought wars, and in the main event, Christian M’Pumbu became the first French fighter to win a major championship in a major Mixed Martial Arts promotion. But which stars shined brightest, and what moments will fans be talking about in the following weeks? Here’s my take on the matter: my top 5 best moments of Bellator 45. ...
Bellator 45 was a big event to end a big fourth season. It featured Bellator newcomers, former tournament finalists, and the crowning of the very first Bellator Light Heavyweight Champion. Now once again it’s time to ask: what’s next? What does the future hold after Patricio Freire and Christian M’Pumbu took home a pair of big victories as well as a pair of $100,000 checks? Here’s my answer to just that: a new edition of my “What’s Next for the Winners and Losers” series of articles, now featuring Bellator 45. ...
It’s finally happened, fans and friends. After ten live, weekly events on prime-time television, after ratings that at times fluctuated wildly, after several amazing fights and some not-so-good ones… Bellator’s fourth season is over. With the end of Bellator 45 comes the end of Bellator’s first season on the MTV2 network, and it was quite an event to cap off what I felt was a mostly-spectacular run. Here are the full results as well as some early commentary for Bellator 45. ...
We’re now only a few days away from Bellator 45. In the main event, the first-ever Bellator Light Heavyweight Champion will be crowned. The co-main event will also be an interesting match-up, as Patricio Freire takes on Daniel Straus in the finals of Bellator’s Season Four Lightweight Tournament. As is customary, here is my official “picks and predictions” post (covering who I think will win and why), now featuring Bellator 45. ...
On May 20, 2011, Bellator will hold its highly-anticipated “Bellator 45” event, featuring Richard Hale and Christian M’Pumbu battling it out to crown the very first Bellator Light Heavyweight Champion. Also, Patricio Freire and Daniel Straus meet in the finals of the Season Four Featherweight Tournament to see who gets the next shot at current champion Joe Warren. Still, some fans may be asking themselves: what are the best reasons to check out this card? Here’s my answer to just that: 5 reasons to watch Bellator 45. ...
