5 Reasons Anderson Silva Could Beat Georges St. Pierre

Once again people are talking about one of the most eagerly-anticipated “dream fights” of all time. Recently, UFC President Dana White revealed that the long-awaited mach-up between UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre and UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva was closer than ever. I consider myself a huge fan of both men, and since both men are so ridiculously skilled, the MMA fanbase as a whole remains largely divided on who would win this epic encounter and why. In order to do both fighters justice, here’s a “Top 5” list of the reasons why Silva would beat GSP, which will soon be followed by a “Top 5” of why GSP would beat Silva. Let’s get to it. ...

UFC veteran Pedro Rizzo expects fireworks between Silva vs. Belfort

A three-time title challenger for the UFC heavyweight crown, Pedro Rizzo has seen and done it all in the sport. While "The Rock" has seen better days throughout his 14-plus years as a professional mixed martial artist, having fought against some of the best fighters in the world including Josh Barnett, Jeff Monson, and Andrei Arlovski amongst others--all of whom Rizzo holds victories over--he is still the type of guy to become genuinely excited when a new fight is on the horizon. And in this case, Rizzo is all too familiar with both men, as fellow countryman Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort clash in February in a fight that Pedro not only has invested interest in, but a desire to watch an explosively exhilarating bout. ...

Anderson Silva would like to fight Michael Bisping in the UK
Anderson Silva would like to fight Michael Bisping in the UK

There isn't much else that ufc middleweight champion Anderson Silva has left to accomplish in his mixed martial arts career, outside of moving either up or down in weight class. The phenomenal Brazilian striker has defended his middleweight title a record seven times, and currently enjoys the longest win streak inside the octagon with twelve consecutive victories. He holds victories as a light heavyweight in the UFC, most notably knocking out former champion Forrest Griffin, one of the division's biggest men, inside of the first round. And while Silva has Vitor Belfort next on deck at UFC 126 this February, he still takes the time in reveling in what might come after next. So what does the Muay Thai specialist desire? A fight with "The Ultimate Fighter" season three winner Michael Bisping, and in the UK no less. ...

Thales Leites training with Anderson Silva
Thales Leites training with Anderson Silva

It wasn't all that long ago that Thales Leites was a fixture in the UFC's middleweight division. He beat some tough guys in his career with the worlds largest promotion, including former King of Pancrase Nate Marquardt. The tough Brazilian submission specialist battled his way to his shot at the title at UFC 97 in April of 2009, however a subsequent loss to Alessio Sakara signaled his release from the promotion. Now Thales finds himself nearly two-years later on the outside looking in, and now looks to rebound after a 3-1 run last year with an even better 2011, and who better to help him then former opponent and UFC middleweight champion, Anderson Silva. ...

Wanderlei Silva: "Vitor Belfort Is Psychologically Weak, And I'm Going to Knock Him Out!"

A lot of fans and fighters are once again talking about Wanderlei Silva after a drop down to Middleweight seems to have revitalized the career of “The Axe Murderer”. Several fighters have called out Wanderlei in the past: no less than Alan Belcher, Nate Marquardt, and Chris Leben have all made it known that they’ve got Wanderlei in their sights. For his part, Wanderlei has called out Chael Sonnen, and most recently, he’s set another high-level Middleweight in his sights. Both for revenge and for championship relevancy, Silva recently stated that he’s ready and willing to fight the current top contender to the UFC Middleweight Championship, the resurrected “Phenom”, Vitor Belfort. ...

Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort keep it civil in Rio
Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort keep it civil in Rio

Anderson Silva and Vitor Belfort have a history. Current UFC middleweight champion Silva is all too familiar with his Brazilian countryman. The two were training partners as part of Team Blackhouse for sometime, before Vitor decided the best fit for his mixed martial arts career would be with Xtreme Couture and Team Tompkins in Las Vegas. While there have been some barbs exchanged in the past between the two Brazilians, mainly on part of Silva, when he was proposed about the possibility of a match up with Vitor suggested that the former light heavyweight champion should go through the gauntlet of contenders in the UFC's 185-pound division before being granted a title shot opposite of Silva. ...

Brazil on the Brain: Rumors of the UFC's 2011 Return Point to August 2011, Rio De Janeiro, and More

Throughout the entirety of Mixed Martial Arts, it has become generally accepted that the best fighters in the world either come from the United States or Brazil. There are a lot of exceptions to the rule, sure, but America and Brazil dominates in terms of star talent and MMA champions. So when the ufc announced its intentions to return to Brazil after a long, long absence, it rightfully set the MMA rumor mill spinning. And a recent report is sure to keep the mill churning for quite some time. ...

Defending Forrest Griffin
Defending Forrest Griffin

Remember when Forrest Griffin was known as the steel-chinned gamer who came to fight in every single one of his matches and would tough through some crazy punishment in order to get the heart-felt win? That memory seems like it’s growing more and more distant as time goes by. Instead, Griffin is now equally as infamous as he is famous: the one-sided beatdown he suffered at the hands of Anderson Silva still follows the man around to this day. In a recent phone interview, it even caused Griffin to cut an interview short… right before stating that he would likely poison Anderson Silva if the two ever had a rematch. Here are all the highlights. ...

The Pound for Pound Crown: Anderson Silva or Georges St. Pierre? Dana White Thinks Silva, Maybe It's Too Close

Pound-for-Pound. It’s a term subject to debate, a broad range of definitions, and a firestorm of controversy every time it’s brought up. Some people swear by it, some swear it’s useless, but everyone has an opinion on it. Right now, the major debate seems to be whether UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva or UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre deserves the title of “Best Pound-for-Pound Fighter”. Never one to let a controversial subject go past without chiming in, the always-insightful and supremely-controversial UFC President Dana White recently made several interesting comments on where he stands regarding this matter. ...

Rich "Ace" Franklin Has Nothing but Positive Things to Say About Upcoming Opponent Forrest Griffin

Rich Franklin has walked a long and tough road back to a championship opportunity ever since famously losing to Anderson Silva for the second time way back in 2007. Big wins over Travis Lutter and Matt Hamill were spoiled by a close Split Decision loss to Dan Henderson, a big win over Wanderlei Silva was virtually erased after a KO loss to Vitor Belfort. Now Franklin is once again riding high with a KO win over Chuck Liddell. Heading into his next fight with Forrest Griffin in February at UFC 126, Franklin recently took the time to speak on a variety of subjects. Here are the highlights from a recent interview with 411 Mania. ...

Marquardt readies for Okami and ponders Silva: “It’s been known to me that Anderson has holes”

UFC middleweight Nate Marquardt may say he won’t be fighting with pressure on his shoulders against Yushin Okami at UFC 122, but some may find that hard to believe.  If he wins, he gets a title shot – a rare second title shot.  It’s that simple.  All that is left to do in his career is to take home the UFC middleweight strap, which clarifies just how much is on the line in Germany for Marquardt.  “Nate the Great” shared with Fighters.com that his focus for Okami – and a title shot, will be razor sharp, something that wasn’t the case when he lost to Chael Sonnen at UFC 109. ...

The UFC Returns to Brazil in 2011
The UFC Returns to Brazil in 2011

In the midst of an international expansion that is virtually unrivaled in all of Mixed Martial Arts, the ufc’s absence from one foreign country in particular remains perplexing. Consider the fact that a massive chunk of the best of the best that compete in the UFC are from Brazil, and then consider the fact that the UFC hasn’t ran an event in Brazil for over a decade. But fear not, the hiatus is now over. According to Graciemag International, 2011 will mark the UFC’s return to Brazil for the first time since 1998. ...

As His Date with Destiny Nears, Nate Marquardt Focuses on Winning

It’s been over three years since Nate Marquardt unsuccessfully challenged Anderson Silva for the ufc Middleweight Championship, and he’s poised to finally earn a rematch with the long-reigning champion if he can win his next fight at UFC 122 in Germany. Standing in his way is Yushin Okami, a fighter who some fans believe is long overdue for a title shot of his own. Heading into this key Middleweight showdown, Nate “The Great” recently told MMA Weekly how he’s approaching such a critical moment in his career. Here are the highlights. ...

Vitor Belfort considers Anderson Silva to be "the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world"

While there has been some dispute as to why Vitor Belfort has been granted a title shot with Anderson Silva, get over it, because it's happening nonetheless. There's some novelty in the fight. They were both friends. They've trained together before, and rumor has it that Belfort used to get the better of Silva during their training sessions. Though if there was an validity to those rumors, they have surely all been put to rest due to the dominance that Anderson, the UFC's middleweight champion has displayed inside the octagon. Belfort has competed in the middleweight division in two of his last three fights, however in his return to the octagon he came in at 195-pounds for a catch-weight contest opposite of former champion Rich Franklin. At UFC 103, Belfort was able to dispatch of Franklin inside of the first-round via knockout. Some may question the UFC's ethics in pitting Silva against Belfort, whom was out of commission for over a year due to injury, make no mistake that Vitor is ready to shock the world and defeat who he considers to be the best fighter on the planet. ...

Even Lorenzo Fertita want's to see: Silva vs St. Pierre
Even Lorenzo Fertita want's to see: Silva vs St. Pierre

Everyone still talks about it. When is it going to happen? What weight class? Will it be contested for a title shot? Blah, blah, blah. It's looked like it's been all hearsay, at least until UFC 112, the promotion's first venture into it's new market, in Abu Dhabi. Anderson Silva, the reigning UFC middleweight champion, made his sixth successful title defense against challenger Demian Maia, which turned into one of the most bizarre bouts in UFC history. His performance against Maia, who was a late replacement for an injured Vitor Belfort, had seemingly cost him his chance to take on Georges St. Pierre, who had traveled to Abu Dhabi and was seemingly being anchored to be Silva's next opponent, since Anderson had spoke before about a desire to return to the welterweight division to challenge GSP specifically. However, with an impressive come-from-behind performance against Chael Sonnen at UFC 118, Silva has regained some of his clout that he had lost previously, and now the aforementioned bout with St. Pierre, seems to be back on the table. ...

Wanderlei Silva wants to reunite old Chute Boxe
Wanderlei Silva wants to reunite old Chute Boxe

As the World MMA Awards of 2010 begin to loom closer and closer, UFC middleweight fighter Wanderlei Silva has made no secret who's vote he will be casting in, for trainer of the year. Rafael Cordeiro, Silva's former trainer for his Chute Boxe days, tops the list. The two have reunited this year when "The Axe Murderer" made a successful debut in the 185-pound division, after a long and storied career n the light heavyweight division, defeating Michael Bisping at UFC 110 in Sydney, Australia, with Cordeiro in his corner. Assisting him in the weeks leading up to the fight, Silva has acknowledged that training again with whom he calls his "Master", Cordeiro has replicated the same success in other fighters and will now assist Silva in bringing back the old Chute Boxe team once again. ...

UFC 127 now becomes UFC 126, for Feb. 5
UFC 127 now becomes UFC 126, for Feb. 5

A previously rumored event for January 29th, which was dubbed as ufc 126, has been pulled off the table. While the event, which was to be a pay-per-view card, was under consideration by the promotion, has now been dubbed null altogether. UFC 125, which is expected to be headlined by current lightweight champion Frankie Edgar defending his title in a rematch against fellow wrestler Gray Maynard, will be taking place on January 1 of the new year, and now what was originally considered to be UFC 127, will now become 126. ...

Despite going 1-2 in UFC, Mario Miranda signs new 4-Fight Deal

Heading into his ufc debut against "The Ultimate Fighter" alumnus in Gerald Harris last March, Mario Miranda was pegged as being the next big thing in the middleweight division. After all, at 6'4, undefeated as a professional with a perfect 10-0 record, and with only two decisions to his name, it was easy to see why this Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt was sought after by the worlds largest organization. However, after a disappointing knockout loss to Gerald Harris and an additional loss to grappling ace Demian Maia at UFC 118, with a win over former UFC title challenger David Loiseau sandwiched in between, it looked like the Brazilian's career inside the octagon would be short lived. ...

Kenny Florian vs Evan Dunham in line for UFC 127, February
Kenny Florian vs Evan Dunham in line for UFC 127, February

An exciting lightweight match up has been added to the seemingly stacked UFC 127 card, which will be taking place in February of next year, in Las Vegas, Nev. The headliner, a rumored bout pitting UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva against former teammate Vitor Belfort is tentatively scheduled for the event, as well as light heavyweight bouts pitting former champions Forrest Griffin and Rich Franklin against one another, as well as Ryan Bader versus phenom, Jon "Bones" Jones. Said lightweight match up, which will be Kenny Florian against Evan Dunham, is a fight that no true mixed martial arts fan would want to pass up. ...

Shane Carwin vs Roy Nelson at UFC 125
Shane Carwin vs Roy Nelson at UFC 125

As previously reported, Shane Carwin will be making his return at ufc 125, though no opponent was mentioned at the time of the reveal. Carwin himself, in fact, made the news of his return on his official Twitter page (@ShaneCarwin), and since then many have speculated who the former title challenger will be facing. In his last outing, Carwin attempted to unify his interim heavyweight title, which he earned with a first round knockout of former champion Frank Mir at UFC 111, when he tangled with the current title holder in Brock Lesnar, at UFC 116 last July. After a dominant first-round turned in, where "The Engineer" was able to drop Lesnar with a barrage of punches, eventually gassing himself when he unloaded a heavy dose of ground and pound that had left Brock on the ropes, but otherwise still in the fight. ...

Jose Aldo or Anderson Silva? Dana White Makes an Interesting Pound-for-Pound Argument

Jose Aldo is a phenomenon. There’s really no other way to accurately describe the current WEC Featherweight Champion. At the recent WEC 51: "Aldo vs. Gamburyan" event, Aldo scored his eighth straight win in the WEC (with no defeats), his seventh stoppage win of those eight fights, and improved his record to 18-1, his first and only loss occurring almost five years ago. With such a record and penchant for putting on amazing performances, talks have quickly shifted from Aldo being one of the best Featherweights in the game to Aldo being one of the best pound-for-pound fighters period. However, Dana White thinks that a certain someone’s pound-for-pound dominance need not fear Jose Aldo. ...

UFC 127..wow: Rich Franklin vs Forrest Griffin
UFC 127..wow: Rich Franklin vs Forrest Griffin

As the new year looms closer and closer, the Super Bowl weekend card looks to be a star studded affair. Previously mentioned, the main event of the evening is looking like it will be a battle between Brazilians when Vitor Belfort challenges former teammate Anderson Silva for the ufc middleweight title. Also on the card, a battle between light heavyweights Ryan Bader and Jon Jones will battle it out for top contenders status in a stacked 205-pound division. Seemingly a shoe in for co-main event honors, the bout was trumped when a recent news breaker was published, which will garner a lot of attention come fight time. ...

Wanderlei Silva, despite barbs with Sonnen, Feels year-long suspension Too Long

Chael Sonnen hasn't made a lot of friends amongst those in the MMA community as of late--especially those of the Brazilian persuasion. Most famously, the former title challenger in Sonnen came under some fire when he was stuck with former PRIDE middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva for an extended amount of time, traveling with "The Axe Murderer" between gym openings and fan signings. The whole duet can be featured on the WandFightTeam Youtube channel, where Silva confronted Sonnen face to face concerning some of the outlandish things Chael had to say, primarily about his native Brazil and good friends in the Nogueria brothers. However, even after the fall out, Wanderlei feels that the year long suspension that the Team Quest product is beginning to endure, following a failed drug screening post-UFC 117, is too much even for the brash middleweight fighter. ...
