It’s that time once again: another Saturday down, another full, live UFC card in the history books. From Facebook to Spike TV to Pay-Per-View, UFC 133 was broadcast around the world. So, how good of a card was it? Quite good, actually, which is really saying something when you consider how numerous injuries nearly crippled this event. UFC 133 rose from the ashes and featured several intense finishes, including Rashad Evans stone-cold killing the recently-revived Tito Ortiz hype train. Here are the full results as well as some early commentary on UFC 133. ...
In just a few hours from now, the UFC will hold its highly-anticipated “UFC 133” event, featuring Tito Ortiz taking on Rashad Evans for the second time in a showdown that’s divided many MMA fans. Also, Vitor Belfort takes on Yoshihiro Akiyama in a battle of tough, entertaining Middleweights. Still, some fans may be asking themselves: what are the best reasons to check out this card? Here’s my answer to just that: 5 reasons to watch UFC 133. ...
Hello and welcome to the latest edition of “Crash Course”. “Crash Course” is a series of articles designed to give readers a quick rundown on all the relevant information they need to know heading into an upcoming major MMA event. Everything from why you should watch, what you should expect in the co-main and main event, and even where and when you can find it on TV is all covered in detail. So let’s get right to it with today’s edition, featuring UFC 133: “Evans vs. Ortiz”. ...
My special series “A Closer Look” concludes its in-depth examination of the UFC 133 card today, highlighting both the co-main and main events of one of the most injury-plagued but still great-looking UFC cards in quite some time. Here’s a quick recap: Part 1 is available here, Part 2 can be seen here, Part 3 is right here, while Part 4 is up here, and Part 5 is here. Now it’s time to focus on a major Middleweight showdown where a win could end up having serious title implications for one of the fighters while almost certainly saving the career of the other. Let’s look at Vitor Belfort vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama. ...
From top to bottom, ufc 133 has been a card plagued with problems. In the grand tradition of once-great cards that fall apart without a single fighter ever walking into the cage, the co-main event of UFC 133 is now off of the table. This is in addition to the two past instances where the main event changed. It's recently been revealed that Antonio Rogerio Nogueira was forced to pull out of his UFC 133 fight against Rich Franklin. Following that announcement the UFC scrambled and ultimately were unable to find a replacement opponent for the former UFC Middleweight Champion. It’s now been confirmed that Franklin has been taken off of the card as well and the new UFC 133 co-main event will feature Vitor Belfort vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama. Here are all the details. ...
Although it was once supposed to be called “Evans vs. Jones” and even "Aldo vs. Mendes", UFC 133 “Evans vs. Davis” has transformed itself into quite the respectable card. After sitting on the sidelines for a very long time in hopes that this exact thing wouldn’t happen, Rashad Evans puts his shot at the UFC Light Heavyweight Championship on the line while another man (Quinton Jackson) gets a shot at the championship. The fight card is also filled with several good veteran talents, from Antonio Rogerio Nogueira to Jorge Rivera to Vladimir Matyushenko. Barring any injuries from now until fight-time, here’s the complete line-up to UFC 133 as well as some of my early reactions. ...
ufc 133 isn’t set to happen until August 2011, but the forward-thinking UFC has already set plans in motion for the Pennsylvania card. Several very intriguing match-ups are all rumored for this event, including Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Vitor Belfort, Jorge Rivera vs. Alessio Sakara, and Brian Ebersole vs. Dennis Hallman. And recently another major match-up has become tied to this card. Read on for all the details. ...
Former ufc light heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort will be making his return to the cage state side come this August. The Brazilian was hoping to be added to the "UFC: Rio" card which will be taking place in his native country, however the UFC brass had other things in mind for "The Phenom", as he will now be partaking in a middleweight bout against the always exciting Yoshihiro Akiyama. UFC 133 takes is rumored to take place at the Wells Fargo Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on August 6. ...
With the recent tragedies in the far east still underway, it appears that Japanese superstar Yoshihiro Akiyama has pulled himself out from his bout with Nate Marquardt come next weekend. The two middleweight fighters were originally scheduled to meet on the main-card televised portion for the pay-per-view event "UFC 128: Jones vs. Shogun" which takes place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey next Saturday. In Akiyama's place, UFC veteran Dan Miller will now be meeting with the Greg Jackson product in an effort to record possibly the biggest win of his career, that would undoubtedly catapult him up the middleweight ladder. ...
The ufc looks to continue its march through 2011 on the same high note it began the year with, and one of the best indicators of that is the continually-developing UFC 128 event. Currently scheduled for March 19, the event is set to be headlined by the returning Mauricio Rua, who looks to defend his newly-won UFC Light Heavyweight Championship for the first time. Rua’s opponent is set to be former Light Heavyweight Champion Rashad Evans. Here’s the latest on the card. ...
While Chael Sonnen takes a lapse in his mixed martial arts career, former opponent Nate Marquardt is now here to pick up the slack. The former King of Pancrase and former UFC title challenger, Nate Marquardt will return to the octagon on March 19 when he meets with K-1 veteran Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 128, which takes place at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Marquardt was last seen in action when he dropped an uninspired unanimous decision to now number one contender Yushin Okami at UFC 122 this past November. ...
Chael Sonnen should work in a grave yard, so he can bury his own career. While news of a reduced sentenced off of an original 12-month suspension handed down by the California State Athletic Commission following a post-UFC 117 drug screening would be generally good news after a tumultuous period of time spent contemplating his mixed martial arts career, it looks like Sonnen will now have time to reflect on what was a burgeoning career as a realtor--well, that's all down the drain now. It has been reported that Sonnen has plead guilty to federal charges of Money Laundering just early today and could be facing jail time. All this comes after the Oregon native is scheduled to face PRIDE veteran Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 128. ...
UFC 120: “Bisping vs. Akiyama” delivered a lot to MMA fans over in the UK. British fans got a good card with good-to-great fights after a year-long drought, and the event itself had so many fans attend that it was able to crack the top ten list of the most-attended events in UFC history. However, the UFC’s success in live gate attendance is tempered with the news that the show didn’t perform as well in its tape-delayed broadcast on Spike TV, as well as the fact that several fighters are looking at lengthy suspensions following UFC 120. Here are all the details. ...
According to early reports and estimates, UFC 120 was quite a success. This was the first event in London, England since UFC 95 back in February 2009, and UK fans turned out in droves to see top British stars like Michael Bisping and Dan Hardy, alongside up-and-comers John Hathaway and winner of “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 9 James Wilks. The action-packed night saw several notable moments, and the UFC recently handed out their traditional “Of the Night” bonuses, awarding the night’s top fighters with an additional $60,000 for their spirited performances. Here are all the details regarding the attendance figures and bonuses of UFC 120: “Bisping vs. Akiyama”. ...
Welcome back to another edition of “What’s Next”, fans and friends. UFC 120: “Bisping vs. Akiyama” has come and gone, and by now fans in the United States have gotten their chance to view the action-packed London, England card courtesy of a tape delayed rebroadcast of the event on Spike TV. The card featured such highlights as Michael Bisping surviving a first-round scare and getting a tough Unanimous Decision win over Yoshihiro Akiyama, while former WEC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit shocked the world and firmly established himself in the UFC with an incredible KO win over Dan Hardy. So what’s next for the winners and losers of UFC 120? Here are my thoughts. ...
The ufc has officially concluded its twentieth double-digit event, UFC 120: “Bisping vs. Akiyama”. In the main event, the always-brash, ever-cocky Michael Bisping toughed out a three-round war with Yoshihiro Akiyama to take a big and badly-needed Unanimous Decision win in front of his hometown crowd. However, the highlight of the event saw former WEC Welterweight Champion Carlos Condit knock out former UFC Welterweight Championship contender Dan Hardy in the culmination of a very bitter verbal war. Here are the full results to UFC 120: “Bisping vs. Akiyama”. ...
Today marks another milestone for the UFC: it’s twentieth triple-digit event. The best and biggest MMA promotion in the planet is celebrating the occasion with a pretty nice card over in England, the birthplace of the UFC’s current drive towards international expansion. In the main event, cocky Brit Michael Bisping will face popular Asian fighter Yoshihiro Akiyama in a clash of nations as well as styles. It all goes down in a couple of hours for us Americans, so here are my picks and predictions for UFC 120: “Bisping vs. Akiyama”. ...
Tomorrow the UFC will hold UFC 120: “Bisping vs. Akiyama” at the O2 Arena in London, England. The card will see brash British bad boy Michael Bisping taking on Yoshihiro Akiyama in the main event. Fellow Brits Dan Hardy, John Hathaway, and James Wilks will all share the main stage with “The Count”. Today the weigh-ins were held for the event, with all fighters successfully making weight. Here are the full weigh-in results to UFC 120, courtesy of Sherdog. ...
1. What effect will trainer Greg Jackson have on Yoshihiro Akiyama? The Japanese fighter noted he worked with Jackson ahead of this fight vs. Michael Bisping. Jackson has come to be known for taking exciting, offensive fighters, and instilling detailed game plans which emphasize controlling pace, and wrestling for body control … often to the benefit of the fighter in terms of scoring points, but not always a fan friendly style. Read on for questions 2-7... ...
After Michael Bisping’s win over Chris Leben at UFC 89 in October of 2008, it appeared the Manchester, England fighter was on the fast track to a title shot in the middleweight division. Then came the devastating knockout loss to Dan Henderson, and a 2-2 overall record in his last four fights. Coming off a win over Dan Miller in his most recent fight, Bisbing, once again, has a little wind at his back, and is looking to return to the title discussion with a convincing win against Japan’s Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 120 in London. ...
Following his tough and heartfelt victory over British bad boy Michael Bisping at UFC 110, fans of “The Axe Murderer” Wanderlei Silva found something they hadn’t seen in years: hope. After going 1-2 in the UFC’s Light Heavyweight division (with one loss at a catchweight 195), Silva seemed poised for a rebirth leading up to his fight with Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 116. The fight never happened, as a rib injury forced Silva off of the card. His replacement, Chris Leben, pulled out a dramatic Triangle Submission in the dying seconds of the last round, capping off a stellar comeback that put Leben truly “into the mix” for the first time in years, if not ever. But “The Crippler” should take notice: Silva is gunning for him when he returns to the Octagon. ...
As the year is coming closer to an end, the now annual World MMA Awards, which is hosted by Fighters Only Magazine, has recently announced their finalists for the December 1st event, which will take place once again in Las Vegas, Nev., which has become a hot bed for all things fighting related. The 2009 event opened up to a large audience, and has become a propellant in the mixed martial arts world, opening up the eyes to a mainstream audience, by the community taking leaps and bounds in order to legitimize itself as not only a legitimate sport, but one that deserves that same sort of recognition that most others receive, here in these United States. ...
You read that right, fans and friends. You thought it was a one-and-done with my “Top 5 Fighters Most Likely to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse” list? If only we were so lucky. Nay, the zombie apocalypse is not the only doomsday scenario we all must be prepared for. It’s not even the most likely. What is more likely is the thing we’ve been fearing since the 1950’s: eventually someone will get angry enough to hit that big red button, and then the nukes will reign from the sky and we’ll all be in “Fallout” and “Mad Max” territory. As before, there are several Mixed Martial Artists you should take great pains to meet up with in order to best survive your new wasteland. So here are my Top 5 Fighters Most Likely to Survive a Nuclear Apocalypse. ...
"The Axe Murderer", Wanderlei Silva will make his anticipated return to the cage towards the beginning of next year. The former Pride champion revealed his plans during a Q & A session during the Fan Expo in Boston, for UFC's first trip into the new market. ...
I wouldn’t call myself a fan of the UFC’s UK posterboy Michael Bisping, but perhaps you could call me a bit of an advocate. More and more nowadays I see people completely disregarding his talent and forecasting doom on every single one of his fights. Here’s a more concrete example: back in the days and weeks leading up to UFC 110, people were practically screaming that Wanderlei Silva would murder Bisping, and some see the victory as a dominant performance by “The Axe Murderer” to this day. In truth, it was a very close fight that perhaps Wanderlei only won by closing out the rounds with go-for-broke flurries. Regardless of how you scored Silva/Bisping, once again I’m hearing how Bisping is going to be no match for his opponent, this time Yoshihiro Akiyama, when the two meet at the upcoming UFC 120 event. And that’s just not true. ...
It may not be for the championship, but fans of “The Phenom” can rest assured that Vitor Belfort will step back into the famed Octagon before 2010 is over and done with. The news came straight from Belfort himself, as he “tweeted” the following recently: “this year I am not going to fight for the title because the champion is hurt but November we will be in action for sure that is what I can say.” Belfort has been out of action since a “phenomenal” return to the Octagon when he TKO’d former UFC Middleweight Champion Rich Franklin in a catchweight bout at UFC 103 in September 2009. That performance was supposedly enough to warrant a title shot at divisional kingpin Anderson Silva, but the fight has so far been postponed on three separate occasions due to various injuries. And while it looks like the Silva/Belfort super-fight is still a matter of “so close and yet so far away”, Belfort’s return to the Octagon should silence all the nay-sayers and prove once and for all that “The Phenom” is once again a force to be reckoned with. ...
Looking ahead to UFC 120, which will be taking place at the O2 Arena in London, England and features Yoshihiro Akiyama vs. Michael Bisping as the main event, now more than ever it appears that whenever the UFC puts on an event in the UK, the UK fans turn up in droves. But therein lies the rub- is the United Kingdom really getting all they can get out of the UFC? And does the UFC consistently bring otherwise lackluster cards to England simply because they know the English fans will show up no matter what? ...
While some have already begun to question its legitimacy as a main event fight, the UFC recently announced that Michael Bisping vs. Yoshihiro Akiyama will headline the upcoming UFC 120 fight card, taking place in London, England. While no championships are on the line, this could be seen as an eliminator match from the top of the division. So who has more to lose, and where will both men find themselves at the outcome of this match? Here are some of my thoughts. ...
Tuesday the UFC made the official announcement of the UFC 116 fight card. As rumored the main event will be Fighters.com second-ranked and UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar (4-1) versus seventh-ranked UFC interim champion Shane Carwin (11-0) on July 3. ...
Fighters.com's ninth-ranked light heavyweight “Axe Murderer” Wanderlei Silva (34-10-1) of Brazil and middleweight Japanese judoka “Sexyama” Yoshihiro Akiyama (14-2) will matchup at 185-pounds at UFC 116 in Las Vegas July 3, according to Fighters Only. ...
