The month of March was crazy for MMA fans, with all notable promotions holding multiple shows, and many of them contained at least one highlight-reel moment. April is already off to a good start, with Strikeforce’s “Challengers 15” and Bellator’s thirty-ninth show both giving fans some very entertaining fights. But for Bellator 39, one fighter above all else deserves to be highlighted, and as much as I support the seriously under-rated Eddie Alvarez, it’s not him. Here’s why Patricky Freire and his shocking “KneeTFO” took home “Best Performance of the Night” for Bellator 39. ...
Hello once more fans and friends and welcome to another new edition of “Best of the Rest”! I really enjoy taking the time to give my detailed thoughts on a show after watching it, but after the serious discussion and debate I’ll raise in topics like “Top 5 Best Moments” and “Best Performance of the Night”, I think it’d be nice to have a tongue-in-cheek topic where I give out some other “awards”. It’s all in good fun, so don’t take any of it too seriously. So let’s dive right into this latest edition, now featuring Bellator 36. ...
After yesterday's exciting Bellator event was brought to an end, we witnessed a concise semi-final picture. In the main-event of the evening, former WEC lightweight champion "Razor" Rob McCullough showed an indomitable spirit where in the first-round of his bout with Patricky Freire, he was taken down and brutalized on the mat, staving off several submission attempts, having barely survived the onslaught. In the second, the former champ picked up the pace and begin landing a series of lowkicks and stinging punches that likely earned him the nod on the judges score cards---but it didn't matter. Midway through the second-round, Freire connected on hard right hand that sent Rob crashing to the mat. Two more blows sealed the deal and declared Patricky the victor by way of knockout. Now, Freire finds himself in the semi-finals of the season four lightweight tournament, however now Toby Imada, the two-time finalist, will be there to greet him. ...
It’s that time once again, fans and friends. Another major MMA event has come and gone, and it’s time for my unofficial “Best Performance of the Night” award. And I will fully and freely admit that it was pretty tough to pick one single performance from Bellator 36, since all of the televised fights ended with dramatic finishes. But one fighter clearly rose above all the rest: here’s why Toby Imada and his awesome first-round Armbar submission victory took home “Best Performance of the Night”. ...
Bellator lightweight champion is a force to reckoned with in his weight class. After an illuminated run in Japan, where Alvarez has picked up some of the biggest wins of his career, which includes victories over the likes of former DREAM lightweight champion Joachim Hansen, former Shooto champion Tatsuya Kawajiri and current DEEP lightweight champion Katsunori Kikuno. Not impressed? En route to Bellator gold, he was able to submit all three of his opponents, including the heralded Toby Imada, a Jiu-Jitsu whiz who became an internet sensation with his inverted triangle choke over lightweight notable Jorge Masvidal, which garnered Imada the "Submission of the Year" on several publications, including a trophy award at the 2009 World MMA Awards, hosted by Fighters Only. So when Alvarez, 26, heard word that Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez has called him out on numerous occasions, the Philly fighter didn't take too kindly to it. ...
The fight everyone wanted to see, is back in business. Eddie Alvarez, the reigning and defending Bellator lightweight champion and DREAM veteran, will be facing UFC veteran and now-internet-sensation, Roger Huerta at Bellator 33. ...
Pat Curran (12-3) entered the night as an underdog yet again but pulled off a split decision, some are calling controversial, victory over Toby Imada (26-15) to win the lightweight tournament. We also saw Megumi Fujii (20-0) get her first TKO victory and become the only fighter that Fighters.com is aware of to go 20-0. ...
A fight between Strikeforce lightweight champion "El Nino" Gilbert Melendez (18-2) and Bellator champion Eddie Alvarez (17-2) is in the works. We are finally starting to see cross-promotional fights that the fans have been clamoring for since the days of Pride Fighting Championships. ...
Bellator Fighting Championships founder and CEO Bjorn Rebney announced today that "El Matador" Roger Huerta (21-3-1) will face rising star Pat Curran (10-3) while “Submission of the Year” title holder Toby Imada (25-14) will face Carey Vanier (8-1) at Bellator’s May 6th event at the Wang Theater in Boston. ...
