Tim Sylvia says he won't be fighting as a super heavyweight anymore following loss to Wagner--good idea

While Tim Sylvia has made his name in the mixed martial arts world as a heavyweight fighter, twice earning the UFC's heavyweight belt, he's recently been competing far above his normal weight of 265-pounds. In fact, in his last outing against season-10 veteran of "The Ultimate Fighter" in Abe Wagner, the former champion clocked in at 311-pounds for the super-heavyweight bout--more than 40-pounds over his usually weight--while Wagner came in at about 256. Though the added weight could be consistent with better knockout power, speed was at a huge disadvantage for the former world champion, which was evident when Sylvia was TKO'd by the TUF veteran in just 32-seconds of the opening round last Friday. ...

Enough Is Enough: Tim Sylvia Needs To Retire
Enough Is Enough: Tim Sylvia Needs To Retire

It’s been a long and painful road downhill for former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia. Since 2008, when high-profile losses to Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Fedor Emelianenko caused Sylvia to vanish from the high-level MMA landscape, “The Maine-iac” has slowly been working his way back up to a point of relevancy. Many still consider Sylvia an afterthought in today’s growing world of elite Heavyweights, and the cynics got plenty of ammunition yesterday, when Sylvia suffered another first-round, first-minute defeat. So what does the future hold for Tim Sylvia? Is it finally time to call it a career? Here are my thoughts. ...

Abe Wagner upsets former UFC champ Tim Sylvia via KO
Abe Wagner upsets former UFC champ Tim Sylvia via KO

Tim Sylvia was one his way back to the big show. Following a four-fight win streak with a notable win over former title challenger Paul Buentello during this stretch, "The Maine-iac" was poised to make a big return to the big show in the immediate future. I guess Abe Wagner didn't get the memo, as he took the opportunity last night to pull off the biggest win of his career and instantly put his name on the map amongst the heavyweight field. ...

Dana White on Rizzo's remarks on potential return: "Where the f*** did that come from?"

Earlier this week, Pedro Rizzo, a three-time ufc title challenger told Graciemag.com that with a win over Tim Sylvia in February, the Brazilian legend may be granted a welcomed return to the octagon. All this according to "The Rock" came from UFC President Dana White himself. Well Pedro, not exactly. ...

The Winner between Tim Sylvia vs Pedro Rizzo in February can find their way back to the UFC in 2011

Both Tim Sylvia and Pedro Rizzo left the worlds largest mixed martial arts organization on their own accords. Rizzo, received a big push by the ufc and was sought out to be the promotion's heavyweight champion when he was granted back-to-back title shots against former champion and UFC Hall of Famer, Randy Couture. Unsuccessful in both his attempts, Rizzo would eventually exit the world's largest organization in 2003, on the heels of a two fight win streak with victories over Ricco Rodgriguez and Tra Telligman. Running a 9-5 record inside the octagon, "The Rock" looked to capitalize on his name in the world of mixed martial arts, and looked to replicate the same success he enjoyed in the UFC when he traveled overseas to the "land of the rising sun". According to Pedro, it would be the biggest mistake of his career. ...

Tim Sylvia Set to Debut as a Professional Wrestler

While the most obvious example of a pro wrestler making the transition to MMA is Brock Lesnar, the UFC’s current Heavyweight champion, it’s a process that Lesnar in no way pioneered. Even the reverse has been done a time or two, with Ken Shamrock being the most obvious example of a Mixed Martial Artist going into pro wrestling. I suppose what makes both men the most obvious examples is their fame: Lesnar is a great Heavyweight champion and an incredible Pay-Per-View draw, while Shamrock had a good run in the WWF (including taking part in several major storyline “angles”) with his pro wrestling character being that of a muscled-up madman that could snap people’s ankles at a moment’s notice. But whether it’s pro wrestlers going to MMA or MMA stars going to pro wrestling, the vast majority of examples sees either athlete compete in one or two “freak show” attractions before going back to whatever sport is his true calling. And you can now add former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim Sylvia to the list. ...

Infamous Moments in MMA History: Tim Sylvia vs. Andrei Arlovski 3

Hello once more fans and friends, and welcome to another edition of “Infamous Moments in MMA History”. Today’s fight is often brought up in conversations revolving around the most boring MMA fight ever. What’s so ironic, and therefore what makes this article so depressing to me, is that both fighters involved in today’s induction were known, and in fact are still known, as heavy-handed strikers not afraid to engage. Maybe it was the fact that both men had knocked each other senseless in brutal, even humiliating fashion. Maybe it’s because, let’s face it, both men reigned as UFC Heavyweight Champion during the absolute worst and weakest UFC Heavyweight division ever. No matter the reason, today’s induction features the notorious third encounter between Andrei Arlovski and Tim Sylvia. ...

UFC 119 now Officially, Official with "Mirko vs Mir"

According to MMAJunkie, MMAWeekly and among other media outlets, UFC executives officially made official the main event of UFC 119, Frank Mir will in fact take on former Pride Grand Prix Champion Mirko "Cro Cop" at the Conseco Fieldhouse, in Indianapolis, Minn. on September 25th. ...

Not Dead Yet: Tim Sylvia on the Comeback Trail Following KO of Paul Buentello

After dropping three straight fights, including a KO loss to aging pro boxer Ray Mercer, former UFC Heavyweight Champion Tim “The Maine-iac” Sylvia may finally be on the comeback trail. He’s still a long way away from becoming relevant again in today’s constantly-improving, constantly-evolving Heavyweight division, but at least he’s begun to get some wins under his belt. And speaking of belts, Sylvia’s most recent fight scored him the Powerhouse World Promotions Heavyweight Championship. For two rounds, Tim Sylvia fought fellow veteran and former UFC fighter Paul Buentello, and he did it by doing the last thing anyone who has seen a Tim Sylvia fight expected him to do: he adopted a superior gameplan and stuck to it. ...

Bigger and Badder: The Future of the UFC Heavyweight Division

With the July 3 mega-fight between ufc Interim Heavyweight Champion Shane Carwin and UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar closer than ever, many fight fans are coming around to the idea that the Heavyweight division is one of the UFC’s strongest, most diverse divisions. Long thought of as the weakest of the UFC’s divisions, barring a few notable exceptions, the Heavyweights have finally taken center stage, and it’s all thanks to several massive men who continue to break and even redefine the mold of a UFC Heavyweight. Looking forward, here are three men that I think will define the UFC’s Heavyweight division for the next several years. ...

Former UFC Champion Tim Sylvia Declines Josh Barnett Fight at DREAM, Considers Mariusz Pudzianowski

Tim Sylvia: Fight Canceled, Adrenaline MMA V Rescheduled

Adrenaline MMA V scheduled for March 20 in Youngstown and featuring a main event between former UFC heavyweight champion “Maine-iac” Tim Sylvia (25-6) and Branden Lee Hinkle (14-10) has been rescheduled to April in Findlay, Ohio, according to MMA Junkie. ...

Tim Sylvia, Houston Alexander Halt Losing Streaks With TKOs at Adrenaline MMA

Both former UFC heavyweight champion “Maine-iac” Tim Sylvia (25-6) and UFC light heavyweight “Assassin” Houston Alexander (9-4) halted two-year, three-fight losing streaks with first-round TKOs Friday night in Omaha at Adrenaline MMA 4. ...

The Fighters.com Interview Tim Sylvia Walked Away From

Former UFC heavyweight champion “Maine-iac” Tim Sylvia (24-6) agreed to an interview with Fighters.com before his fight versus Jason Riley (6-1) at Adrenaline MMA 4 in Omaha Friday...until he peeped my questions. "Chad, I am not going to do this interview," Sylvia graciously responded.  "I don't like how this whole thing is coming accross.  Sorry." Below are the questions that Sylvia refused to answer along with what Fighters.com could dig-up.  You decide if Fighters.com's questions were out of line.  Of course, Fighters.com would prefer to put Sylvia on the record on the issues fans are chattering about.   And, Fighters.com stands by everything written here as told by reliable sources, but sources can only speak from their point of view.   It's unfortunate Sylvia won't tell his story. Fighters.com: Looking back, was the "Merciless" Ray Mercer (1-1) fight a good decision? ...

After Fighters.com received death threats and an ominous blood and other bodily fluid-stained hockey mask in the mail from horror geeks, I went back to my source that told me Former UFC heavyweight champion “Maine-iac” Tim Sylvia (24-6) is a stand-in for horror film icon Jason Voorhees. "I made a couple mistakes...," admitted my source, who is very close to Sylvia. "Tim is a stand-in for Michael Myers in the 'Halloween' movie out now." So, Sylvia is standing-in as Michael Myers, not Jason Voorhees. Being a person afraid of things that could really happen and generally bored by horror films, I don't know whether or not this is equally as outrageous to horror geeks as Sylvia standing-in for Jason Voorhees, but I'm sure I'll find out soon enough. ...

Note: Please refer to Fighters.com's correction of this story.

Former UFC heavyweight champion “Maine-iac” Tim Sylvia (24-6) is currently in Boston playing horror film icon Jason Voorhees in the yet-to-be-titled "Friday the 13th" sequel, Fighters.com has confirmed with a source close to the fighter.

On a three-fight losing streak and most recently on the horizontal end of a “Merciless” Ray Mercer (1-0) nine-second knockout at Adrenaline MMA 3 in Birmingham 13 June, Sylvia will get to diggin’ himself out of the deepest trench of his underrated career versus Jason Riley (6-1), at Adrenaline MMA 4 in Omaha 18 September.

Sylvia is one of the actors standing-in as the hockey mask-mugged serial killer in the movie franchise began in 1980 and spanning 12 volumes.

While filming in Boston, Sylvia is training at Sityodtong USA with trainer Mark DellaGrotte, who trains two-time UFC lightweight title challenger "KenFlo" Kenny Florian (11-4), former UFC middleweight challenger "Predator" Patrick Cote (13-5), and The Ultimate Fighter 1 finalist "American Psycho" Stephan Bonnar (11-6).

...

As reported by Fighters.com 9 August, former UFC heavyweight champion “Maine-iac” Tim Sylvia (24-6) and current UFC 205er "Assassin” Houston Alexander (8-4) will co-headline Adrenaline MMA 4 in Omaha 18 September in separate fights, Adrenaline MMA CEO Monte Cox announced Saturday.

On a three-fight losing streak and most recently on the horizontal end of a "Merciless" Ray Mercer (1-0) nine-second knockout at Adrenaline MMA 3 in Birmingham 13 June, Sylvia will get to diggin' himself out of the deepest trench of his underrated career versus Jason Riley (6-1).

Riley knocked out Justin Black (2-2) for the heavyweight title at Caged Vengence 4 in Columbus 3 April.
...

UFC light heayvweight "Assassin" Houston Alexander (8-4), former UFC heavyweight champ "Maine-iac" Tim Sylvia (24-6), and prolific light heavyweight "Gumby" Jeremy Horn (81-19-5) are all rumored to fight on Adrenaline MMA 4 in Omaha 18 September. According to NWI.com, Omaha's Alexander is still under contract with the UFC, but will be allowed to fight for Andrenaline MMA after losing three straight by stoppage in the Octagon, most recently tapping in an arm triangle to "Red" Eric Schafer (13-4-2) at Fight Night 15 in Alexander's hometown last September. Fighters.com could not confirm the appearances of Alexander, Sylvia, or Horn with Adrenaline MMA President Monte Cox. ...

Emelianenko after Affliction's debut.Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio announced Thursday in New York City that both Fighters.com's third-ranked heavyweight "Pitbull" Andrei Arlovski (14-5) and sixth-ranked "Babyface Assassin" Josh Barnett (23-5) are being considered as opponents for Heavyweight Champion "Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko (28-1) at Affliction's yet to be re-scheduled second event. However, Atencio had already confirmed Arlovski as Emelianenko's opponent to MMA Rated 10 October, according to that website. Additionally, Barnett has announced that he won't fight Emelianenko, according to MMA Weekly. "It’s just not a fight that’s going to happen in January.  And I think that the feeling is actually mutual," Barnett told that website 2 October. Atencio also wouldn't commit on a date or location of Affliction's second event, originally scheduled for Las Vegas 11 October. Atencio said Affliction: Day of Reckoning would "take place in the first quarter of ‘09." ...

Fighters.com's September Heavyweight Rankings

Elusive Russian Sergei Kharitonov (15-3) breached Fighters.com's Heavyweight Top Ten in September without having fought for a year. Kharitonov TKO'd "Demolition Man" Alistair Overeem (28-11) in Yokohama in September 2007; but, has been more active on the rumor mill than in the ring since. He was floated as "Cro Cop" Mirko Filipovic's (23-6-2) opponent at DREAM.4 in June and lately was mentioned as a challenger for the EliteXC Heavyweight Championship versus "Bigfoot" Antonio Silva (11-1). Kharitonov found his way into neither fight and may have a short stint as a top ten big boy as fighters beneath him line-up legit matches. A spot opened for Kharitonov when "Texas Crazy Horse" Heath Herring (28-14) was mauled by physical phenom Brock Lesnar (2-1) in Minneapolis 9 August, shoveling Herring out of the eighth rank. Fighters.com's August Heavyweight Rankings

From Russia with gloves, "Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko(28-1) stamped his heavyweight dominance on "Maine-iac" Tim Sylvia's (24-5) head in Anaheim, east of Los Angeles, 19 July. His dismantling of "Big" Tim in 36 seconds earned him the Fighters.com Heavyweight Championship, jumping from sixth and dumping Sylvia from third to seventh. Emelianenko choking Sylvia photo courtesy of Affliction. The "W" strips naked UFC President Dana White's proclamation that all other promotions are the minor leagues, at least at north of 205-pounds. In fact, Emelianenko's victory makes clear that the Octagon hasn't been the proving grounds for the world's top heavyweights for quite some time. The UFC Champ, second-ranked "Minotauro" Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (31-4-1), took a thrashing from Sylvia in February before tapping the two-time UFC titlist in a guillotine. Nogueira loses his Fighters.com Heavyweight Championship, falling into the top contender spot, but a top contender whose register already records two UD losses to the new champ four years ago. Nog' is set to clash with un-ranked former UFC Champ Frank Mir (11-3) after Mir tapped rook' Brock Lesnar (1-1), which tells you all you need to know about the UFC heavyweight class. But, Emelianenko's new promoter, Affliction, is playing the name game too. ...

Sylvia to Fight on Next Affliction Card?

Fighters.com’s third-ranked heavyweight and former UFC Champion “Maine-iac” Tim Sylvia (26-6) expects to fight in Affliction’s 11 October event, he revealed in an interview with the Houston Chronicle published Sunday. When asked whether he would be a part of Affliction’s next show, Sylvia answered, “Yeah, I believe so but I’m going to let Affliction do all the announcing.” Sylvia was submitted in 36 seconds via rear naked choke by new WAMMA Champion “Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko (28-1) at Affliction’s debut event 19 July. ...

Affliction Veep Tom Atencio wants "Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko (28-1) to fight "The Natural" Randy Couture (16-8) at Affliction's October sequel if Couture can get a judicial nod to fight; but, if not, Emelianenko will be matched versus either "Babyface Assassin" Josh Barnett (26-5) or "Pitbull" Andrei Arlovski (13-5). If Atencio can make Emelianenko v Couture, Barnett and Arlovski will fight for the right follow-up Couture versus Emelianenko, since Couture has intimated his intention to retire win, lose, or draw versus Emelianenko. However, the more intriguing matchmaking question in the heavyweight division after Saturday night is what to do with "Maine-iac" Tim Sylvia (24-5) and "Big" Ben Rothwell (33-6) after their losses. They present two very different matchmaking problems. "Big" Ben should get no rest after his gutsy brawl versus legit heavyweight stud Arlovski. Rothwell took everything Arlovski dished and dished back until the end. Rothwell closed distance despite Arlovski's superior footwork, rolled out of the "Pitbull's" leg locks, and worked Arlovski over from the top position on the mat. As soon as Rothwell is healthy, he should get another challenge just a little less monumental than Arlovski. ...

Emelianenko: "I am human."

After destroying "Maine-iac" Tim Sylvia (26-6) in Anaheim, east of Los Angeles, Saturday night, "Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko (28-1) told the press that he couldn't say how he would beat himself and giggled at the thought.   ...

Any Questions?

It only took 36 seconds for "Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko (28-1) to leave "Maine-iac" Tim Sylvia (24-5) laid out on the mat in Anaheim, east of Los Angeles, Saturday night. Just thirty-six seconds to answer questions raised by Fighters.com about Emelianenko's two-year hiatus from top competition. At the bell, Sylvia exited his corner in an awkward, low crouch. Obviously...Emelianenko wasted no time blasting Sylvia with a left, right hook combo, followed by an uppercut. "I've never been hit that hard in my life," said Sylvia after the fight.  "He's not human." The "Maine-iac" dismantled to the mat; and, Emelianenko stuck in a rear naked choke that forced Sylvia to tap. After the fight, the Russian was nonchalant, but not arrogant about his destruction of one of the world's top heavyweights. The victory cemented him as the top heavyweight in the world, the top pound-for-pound mixed martial artist in the world, and perhaps the greatest mixed martial artist ever. ...

Affliction Weighs-In

Fighters.com's third- and sixth-ranked heavyweights "Maine-iac" Tim Sylvia (24-4) and "Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko (27-1) weighed-in for their Affliction fight for the WAMMA title tonight in Anaheim, east of Los Angeles. Affliction business partner Donald Trump hyped the crowd before the two fighters weighed-in. ...

Emelianenko at the Affliction press conference."We're going to have a true champion," promised Fighters.com's third-ranked heavyweight"Maine-iac" Tim Sylvia(24-4) Wednesday at an Affliction presser in Los Angeles. He hovered over sixth-ranked, though widely recognized most talented, heavyweight "Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko(27-1), who whispered greetings to America in Russian. Not that size matters to either fighter - Emelianenko has conquered bigger; Sylvia has lost to smaller - but, Sylvia's size advantage was apparent. Sylvia and Emelianenko pose for press. ...
