He’s one of the greatest, most skilled, most dominant, most beloved Mixed Martial Artists of all time. There is only one Randy Couture. We could be here all day if I tried listing his numerous accolades and why his fans adore him so much, but today’s topic is one for concern. According to a recent report, Randy Couture’s future is very up-in-the-air at this moment, despite the UFC Hall of Fame member going on yet another career rebirth in his recent trek back down to the UFC’s Light Heavyweight Division. Randy Couture’s lawyer recently spoke to MMAFighting.com, and his words were far from uplifting. Here are the highlights. ...
When Fedor Emelianenko speaks, everyone listens. Mostly because it happens so rarely, but also because he’s one of the most well-respected and beloved MMA fighters ever. “The Last Emperor” recently took part in a fan Q&A session on his official website, with MixFight providing a full transcript and LowKick providing us with the English translation. Here are some of the major highlights that help clue us all in on Fedor’s future. ...
He’s a controversial athlete…but he’s a former UFC champion. He’s been popped for steroids in the past…but he’s one of the best Heavyweights competing right now, and certainly one of the best not in the UFC. It could be argued that his latest steroid scandal caused the death of an entire promotion…but he’s competed in numerous high-profile fights that have drawn big money. Is he worth the risk, in the end? Strikeforce seems to think so, as they announced recently via a press release that they had signed Josh Barnett to an exclusive contract. In the press release, Barnett said the following: “STRIKEFORCE is the home of the best heavyweight division in the world and I’m proud to be able to call it my home now.” ...
As the fantastic year MMA had in 2010 draws closer and closer to a close, I’m left wondering what 2011 could bring us that could possibly hold a candle to some of the crazy events of this year. This year gave us amazing shows, unpredictable outcomes, the continued growth of the sport, new champions, new challengers, and so much more. It’s going to take a lot to outdo 2010. In that regard, here are five fantasy match-ups that I think could realistically happen in 2011 and would go a long way towards outdoing 2010 in terms of excitement, anticipation, and fight quality. ...
You read that right, fans and friends. You thought it was a one-and-done with my “Top 5 Fighters Most Likely to Survive a Zombie Apocalypse” list? If only we were so lucky. Nay, the zombie apocalypse is not the only doomsday scenario we all must be prepared for. It’s not even the most likely. What is more likely is the thing we’ve been fearing since the 1950’s: eventually someone will get angry enough to hit that big red button, and then the nukes will reign from the sky and we’ll all be in “Fallout” and “Mad Max” territory. As before, there are several Mixed Martial Artists you should take great pains to meet up with in order to best survive your new wasteland. So here are my Top 5 Fighters Most Likely to Survive a Nuclear Apocalypse. ...
James Toney's introduction into MMA was a true learning process. His teacher, ufc Hall of Famer and former 5-time champion Randy Couture, taught him all too well. The boxing legend learned two things. 1)Just because you submitted Muhammed Lawal, the former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, does not give you a green card into a forgein land. 2)Never, under any circumstances, compete in mixed martial arts, again. But Toney took more than a valuable lesson away from his 3-plus minute drubbing against the MMA legend--he took home a 6-figure check to take to the bank. ...
Well, that sure was surprising wasn’t it? UFC 118 was filled with awesome fights, big winners, and big losers. From Nate Diaz choking out Marcus Davis to James Toney getting choked out by Randy Couture, UFC 118 lived up to just about all of its potential. Looking forward, here’s what I think is next for some of the big winners, and even some of the big losers, of UFC 118: “Edgar vs. Penn 2”. ...
Well, after all the hype, the back-and-forth war of words, the intense debate, everything that could possibly ever happen leading up to a historic fight…Randy Couture has beaten James Toney. He did it fast, he did it furiously, and he came out more aggressively than I think anyone would have ever thought he would. James Toney’s first MMA fight didn’t make it out of the first round, it didn’t even make it out of the fourth minute. So I’m pretty sure I’ll be inundated by a non-stop verbal assault by...well, by pretty much everybody, due to my infamous article “Facing the Inevitable: James Toney Will Knock Out Randy Couture”. And you know what, fans and friends? I don’t regret picking James Toney for a second. ...
It ain't easy being Randy Couture's son. The indirect fame and highlights may cripple anyone who's not ready for the stardom--but Ryan, the 27-year-old son of said MMA legend, is ready for it. The newest addition to Strikeforce's lightweight division, Ryan made his promotional debut, which also marked the Xtreme Couture product's professional mixed martial arts debut, at Strikeforce Challengers 10, nearly two weeks ago in Phoenix, Arizona. ...
For quite a whole lot of reasons, the upcoming UFC 118 event is quickly becoming the can’t-miss event of the latter half of 2010. Whether it’s James Toney vs. Randy Couture, Frankie Edgar vs. BJ Penn, or even Kenny Florian vs. Gray Maynard, UFC 118 sounds like a dream-card on paper. However, there’s one UFC 118 fight that I’ve seen a definitive lack of coverage on, and for the life of me, I can’t tell why. It’s virtually vanished from the popular press, but I’m really looking forward to the match-up between Marcus Davis and Nate Diaz. ...
Despite being in the middle of a two-fight losing streak, I personally think the future’s still quite bright for Brandon Vera. I don’t think he’ll ever reach the potential that he could have achieved when he first came into the UFC and people were predicting that he would be the next UFC Heavyweight Champion, but I think he will always have the skills to consistently be “in the mix”. His star status may be on the decline, but I really don’t see any shame in losing to the likes of Randy Couture and Jon Jones. However, even though Jon Jones quickly finished Vera in their “UFC on Versus” fight, Vera recently stated that he still doesn’t buy into the hype. Personally, I’m never again going to bet against Jon Jones. ...
There is little doubt about how determined BJ Penn will be this Saturday night at UFC 118 when he seeks revenge against lightweight champion Frankie Edgar who took his title belt last spring in Abu Dhabi. His focus will be first to engage more, as he told the media last week, and then on finishing, an attribute he feels not enough young MMA fighters emphasize and possibly a lightly veiled dig at Edgar for his style of movement and distance in the first fight. However, while waiting for his turn in the locker room at the Boston Garden, don’t be surprised if UFC cameras catch ‘The Prodigy’ eyeing the debut of James Toney who bravely makes his MMA start against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture. ...
The only man to ever be called Elite XC Heavyweight Champion, Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva recently came down hard on industry insiders ranking current UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar as the top Heavyweight in the world. Silva recently spoke to tatame.com and asserted that Fabricio Werdum should be the number-one Heavyweight following his surprise submission win over “The Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianeko, who had sat atop the #1 Heavyweight slot for several years running, at least according to many major news outlets and insider websites. Silva also expressed shock over a fighter having a 5-1 record being considered the best in the world. I, personally, am more shocked that people are taking Antonio Silva seriously when he says things like this. ...
Electronic Arts, one of the biggest and most famous video game publishing companies on the planet, seems to be plowing full-tilt ahead with their upcoming MMA video game, “EA Sports MMA”. EA Sports is currently in the midst of revealing the official roster of the game, and so far, a complete list of both the Heavyweight and Light Heavyweight division fighters has been revealed. In addition, EA Sports MMA recently released a teaser video touting the game’s expansive online mode. For those in need of a refresher course, or even an introduction, here’s a quick rundown of what’s known about EA MMA so far, including the latest roster reveals. ...
UFC Hall of Famer and budding actor Randy Couture, might not have made it quite yet as an actor, but he certainly has a cushion now. The former light heavyweight and heavyweight champion, who made his way from straight to dvd-film to silver screen, has it hit big with Sylvester Stallone's "The Expendables", which opened this past weekend. ...
In the world of Mixed Martial Arts, few names are as hallowed as Randy Couture. “The Natural” is rightly regarded as a shining beacon of light for this sport that we love so much, his nickname “Captain America” perfectly summarizes why he is so beloved. So it should come as no surprise that stepping out of the shadow of “The Natural” has got to be one of the most difficult tasks an aspiring Mixed Martial Artist could be faced with. But Ryan Couture introduced himself to fans in a big way during Strikeforce Challengers 10, and while he still has a way to go before he fully emerges as a fighter you’d notice with or without his famous last name, you really couldn’t have asked for more when it comes to making an impression in your first pro fight. ...
Every UFC event answers many questions about fighters and rankings, yet almost always stirs up more questions about where the sport is headed. Here are a few of my takeaways and thoughts per the fights last Saturday and UFC issues at large. ...
Boxing legend and now budding-actor, Mike Tyson joined the Gridlock on ESPN Radio in Las Vegas, Nev., yesterday afternoon. While hot topics such as football, Mel Gibson crazy rantings, where you can find the best looking women, "Iron" Mike was able to squeeze in some praise for the MMA community, including James Toney inception into the UFC against legend Randy Couture, and the beast that is Brock Lesnar. ...
I along with many other people scoffed and scorned when news broke that the UFC had signed aging pro boxer James “Lights Out” Toney to a fight with UFC legend and former Light Heavyweight and Heavyweight Champion Randy Couture. My strongest initial reaction consisted of little more than “Randy Couture + Takedowns = Win”. That belief, that Couture’s wrestling will be far too much for James Toney to handle, seems to be the one almost everyone is betting on. But now that their showdown is little more than a month away, I find myself leaning towards “Lights Out” more and more. ...
For the longest time, fans of MMA were left without a video game to call their own. With the release of UFC 2009: Undisputed, MMA video games have made a triumphant return. Fans of MMA and video games have it especially good in 2010, as publishing juggernaut Electronic Arts is set to launch “EA Sports MMA” in 2010, featuring a roster that includes Fedor Emelianenko, Randy Couture, and countless others from both Strikeforce and the Japanese-based DREAM promotion. But can it topple UFC Undisputed 2010 and become the marquee franchise in the MMA video game market? ...
Nothing gets an MMA fan talking quite like dream matches. Even with MMA being bigger and better than it’s ever been, there are a number of dream matches that consistently elude reality. So here are my top five “dream matches” that still need to happen. ...
When I think of the current rumors concerning former World Wrestling Entertainment performer Dave Batista (known in the WWE as simply Batista) breaking into the world of Mixed Martial Arts via the Strikeforce promotion, the phrase “whatever it takes to succeed” comes to mind. Let’s not mince words here: Batista fighting in Strikeforce would be a “freak show” in every sense of the word, no matter who his opponent would be. ...
The Atlanta Falcons have become the first professional sports team to use their own team-sponsored mixed martial arts (MMA) training regiment during their off-season workouts. ...
This weeks installment of "Weekly Jab" brings you news on the new UFC light heavyweight champion, a former NFL football player and one of the most recognizable names in the sport. ...
Since heavyweight boxing champion “Lights Out” James Toney (0-0) signed to fight in the UFC, high profile heavyweights have stepped up to welcome Toney into the Octagon. Among those heavyweights are The Ultimate Fighter 10 champion “Big Country” Roy Nelson (15-4) and former UFC champion “The Natural” Randy Couture (18-10). But, that reminds me of a story my friend's dad - good ol' Paul Heck - told me years ago. He's a Vietnam veteran and told us how he enlisted to go to Vietnam. They'd ask incoming soldiers to rank the top three destinations they would like to be stationed. Seventeen-years old and seemingly invincible, Mr. Heck scribbled Vietnam atop his list. He wanted to fight! But, he didn't realize then that the military never sent soldiers to Vietnam if they listed Vietnam as their top choice. The military figured that if you wanted to go to Vietnam you either had a death wish or would be too reckless in battle. They wanted soldiers in Vietnam who wanted to come home alive. So, Mr. Heck was stationed in The Philippines and served honorably. ...
This Saturday Fighters.com sixth-ranked middleweight Demian Maia (11-1) will step inside the Octagon to do battle against Fighters.com and UFC middleweight champion "The Spider" Anderson Silva (25-4). This will not be the walk in the park for Silva most seem to believe. ...
The Canadian Press reported Monday night that UFC 115 June 12 will not take place in Vancouver as previously rumoured and Cincinnati is a potential destination for the event. ...
Shortly after Fighters.com reported the reports of a verbally agreed to matchup between “Iceman” Chuck Liddell (21-7) and “Ace” Rich Franklin (26-5) at UFC 115 in Vancouver June 12, UFC President Dana White denied the reports. ...
Contrary to popular belief, the story of modern mixed martial arts doesn't begin with UFC 1 in Denver in 1993 or with the Gracie family of Brazil. Though of course the Gracies deserve a prominent place in the history of MMA, their intention was never for fighters to begin training across styles. Quite the opposite! Their intention was to prove that Gracie Jiu-Jitsu was the most dominant style of martial arts, a traditional and now seemingly archaic notion about dominance of a single fighting art. Sport MMA is an unintentional by-product of their goal. No, UFC 1 created the most prominent forum ever for martial arts styles to mix, but the philosophical underpinnings of MMA began in the San Francisco Bay area in 1965 by an ingenious martial arts pioneer: Bruce Lee, known in his native China as Jun Fan. ...
