Where's your Outrage at Strikeforce and Scott Coker Over Jay Hieron?

Article Posted: January 31st, 2010 | By: Fighters.com Staff | Comments: 4 | Comment Now

For years I’ve listened to MMA fans spout hateful, irrational conspiracy theories about UFC President Dana White.  White is certainly not above criticism, and you’ll read some of the most biting criticism of White here at Fighters.com.  (Other MMA media outlets wouldn’t dare risking their credentials with Zuffa by criticizing White.  That’s a little something you might not have known…)  But, a lot of the criticism has been just ridiculous, including accusations of thrown fights and paid-off referees.

Scott Coker and his promotion, Strikeforce, have been regarded as a fairer organization for fighters, perhaps justifiably so.

Last night Strikeforce: Miami took place and the main event was a fight for the vacant welterweight title. “Whitemare” Marius Zaromskis (11-3) stepped inside the cage to fight “Diablo” Nick Diaz (21-8) in what was a highly anticipated match.

Marius became the DREAM welterweight champ after winning the 2009 welterweight Gran Prix and was looking to become the first fighter to hold titles in Japan and in the United States. The only thing standing between him and that distinction was a 5 inch reach advantage that Diaz had in his favor.

Nick Diaz Misses Pre-Strikeforce Drug Test

Article Posted: August 10th, 2009 | By: Chad Edward | Comments: 0 | Comment Now

Strikeforce welterweight contender “Diablo” Nick Diaz (20-8) skipped a mandatory California State Athletic Commission pre-fight drug screening Friday for his title fight versus “Thoroughbred” Jay Hieron (14-4) at Strikeforce in San Jose 15 August.

Maybe it was scheduled at 4:20 PM?

A card-carrying medical marijuana toker, Diaz was popped for marijuana use by the Nevada State Athletic Commission after tapping “Fireball Kid” Takanori Gomi (28-6) in a gogoplata at PRIDE 33 in Las Vegas in February 2007.

Nick Diaz To Fight Jay Hieron For Strikeforce Title

Article Posted: July 29th, 2009 | By: Chad Edward | Comments: 0 | Comment Now

Xtreme Couture welterweight “Thoroughbred” Jay Hieron (14-4) has signed with San Jose-based MMA promoter Strikeforce following the disintegration of Affliction and will fight Nick Diaz (20-8) for the promotion’s first welterweight title, according to multiple sources.

Former IFL titlist Hieron knocked out recent DREAM Welterweight Grand Prix finalist Jason High (6-1) in 1:04 at Affliction in Anaheim last January. He was scheduled to fight former EliteXC title challenger “Semtex” Paul Daley (18-9-2) at Affliction in Anaheim 1 August.

Diaz tapped former EliteXC middleweight title challenger “Hands of Steel” Scott Smith (15-7) in a rear naked choke at Strikeforce in St. Louis last June. He was originally scheduled to rematch “Diesel” Joe Riggs (30-11) for the Strikeforce title until Riggs pulled out with an injury.

Alvarez Agrees to Fight Diaz for EliteXC Title

Article Posted: October 3rd, 2008 | By: Selina "Dead" Wong | Comments: 0 | Comment Now

Fighters.com’s third-ranked lightweight Eddie Alvarez (15-1) expects to face Nick Diaz (18-7) for EliteXC’s vacant 160-pound title 8 November, reported MMA Weekly Thursday.

“I’ll be fighting Nick Diaz, we’re about 90-something percent positive I’ll be fighting Nick Diaz for the EliteXC title at 160 (pounds),” Alvarez said.

“Nick’s a great opponent, he poses a lot of threats. Very good striking, as well as good jiu-jitsu, so he’s been in the game a while, he’s a pure fighter and I like that.”

Alvarez added, “[Diaz] gets a lot of bad rap from a lot of people with his attitude, but deep down he likes to fight, he enjoys to fight and I consider myself the same kind of person. I enjoy to fight, my heart’s in this.”

The title is currently vacant after the belt was stripped recently from “King Karl” Karl James Noons (7-2).

Alvarez most recently participated in DREAM’s Lightweight Grand Prix in July, winning a spot in the final with a first-round TKO of “Crusher” Tatsuya Kawajiri (22-5-2), only to withdraw due to injury.

Diaz is coming off three TKO wins, most recently over “Wildman” Thomas Denny (26-17) in the second round in July.
