By John Moody In advance of a week that will be filled with serious MMA news concerning UFC 128 in the New York City area, here is a little MMA humor to get started, courtesy of former Welterweight Champion, Matt Serra. In a recent discussion with Fighters.com Radio, Serra was asked about his current weight. In response, he veered off into comparing his waistline with his UFC boss Dana White's figure and fellow fighters, Georges St. Pierre and Martin Kampmann's abdominal structure. He also commented on how he would modify the very popular and successful MMA weight loss program, "The Dolce Diet." Serra also hints about his time-table for his next fight. Fun stuff with Mr. Serra. Matt Serra joined Fighters.com Radio recently to discuss a range of issues with one of the most pressing being the launch of Chris Weidman's career at UFC on Versus 3 this Thursday night from Kentucky. Weidman is based out of Long Island and the multiple gyms tied to Team Serra-Longo. Serra breaks down why the Hofstra product is so talented and shares some inside talk about how he nudged UFC matchmaker, Joe Silva, to give the kid a shot. Click through to listen. ...
By John Moody Pete Sell is known for delivering and taking big blows. His knockout of Phil Baroni and war with Scott Smith are UFC classics. After going 1-4 in his last five UFC fights and being released in the spring of 2009, the man called “Drago” is plotting his return. His go-for-broke style was fan pleasing yet not the best strategy for his long term career. After his loss to Matt Brown at UFC 96, Sell took a much needed breather and a very hard look at his career. ...
By John Moody Who needs a Matt Serra fix? Always entertaining in front of the mic, Serra joined Fighters.com recently to talk about a range of issues from why he kept his fight against Chris Lytle at UFC 119 standing, to his UFC future and hopes to scrap at Madison Square Garden, to if his good buddy, Pete "Drago" Sell will be making a comeback ... he also throws in a movie review and recomendation. Serra is an avid movie buff. This is a great MMA value if you have seven minutes for Serra! Click through to listen to the audio interview with Matt Serra. ...
Renzo Gracie spoke his mind in part two of our exclusive Fighters.com video interview. The MMA legend looks back to his fight vs. Matt Hughes in Abu Dhabi, expands on why Frankie Edgar has blown up, who will win Edgar/Maynard 2, why Matt Serra disregarded his Jiu Jitsu against Chris Lytle, and if he ever plans to fight again. Season 12 coaches of "The Ultimate Fighter" Georges St. Pierre and Josh Koscheck have been expected to tangle with one another at UFC 124, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in a welterweight clash. Champion GSP will look to make his fifth successful title defense against foe Koscheck. The two had met previously at UFC 74, where the American Kickboxing Academy product was riding a 5-fight win streak inside the cage coming into the bout, meanwhile, "Rush" was coming off of a disappointing and shocking knockout loss to the unheralded Matt Serra at UFC 69. While competitive in spots, St. Pierre was able to dominate the wrestling department against the former NCAA champion, en route to a unanimous decision victory. ...
ufc 119: “Mir vs. Cro Cop” was a very physical night of fights for many of the performers competing on the night’s card, and as such, several injuries were sustained in the course of the event. The Indiana Gaming Commission has recently released their list of fighter suspensions following the event, and topping the charts are both Matt Serra and Mirko Filipovic, each of whom received indefinite suspensions. Even Mark Hunt was suspended indefinitely. Here’s how it all broke down. ...
Just how big is the UFC? Apparently it’s big enough that their recent UFC 119 event was one of the biggest in recorded Indiana history. According to MMAWeekly, 15,811 fans packed into the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana for a total gate of $1,613,337. Fans were treated to a slightly-underwhelming show that I honestly believe isn’t getting half the credit it deserves in the early days of reflection and post-fight analysis. The UFC opened up its pocketbooks after the event and issued $70,000 bonuses in the form of their often-used but sometimes-confusing “Of the Night” awards. Here’s who got what and why. ...
UFC 119 was an interesting event to say the very least. We saw Ryan Bader beat Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and cement his status as a top-division athlete. Chris Lytle put himself “into the mix” for the first time in years (some cynics would say “ever”) with his dominant performance over former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra. Sean Sherk returned and will likely become a lightning-rod of heated debate due to his controversial win over Evan Dunham. All this happened, and then Frank Mir knocked out Mirko Filipovic. So what’s next for the big winners and losers of UFC 119? Here are my thoughts. ...
Another UFC event has come and gone, and what a shocking (but perhaps also underwhelming?) night of fights it was. The Spike TV “Prelims Live” special delivered two great fights for free, setting up what would be a Pay-Per-View card with its fair share of highlights as well as not-so-good moments. In the main event, former UFC Heavyweight and Interim Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir put a dramatic end to what had been a largely underwhelming performance when he surprise-KO’d feared Croatian striker and semi-revered PRIDE legend Mirko Filipovic. Here are the full results to UFC 119: “Mir vs. Cro Cop” as well as my thoughts on the card. ...
The time for talk is finally over: UFC 119 is upon us. The event is scheduled to take place today at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. The stacked card features Mirko Filipovic vs. Frank Mir, Ryan Bader vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Chris Lytle vs. Matt Serra, Evan Dunham vs. Sean Sherk, and more. Weigh-ins were held yesterday and not a single fighter came in over the limit. All the fights are official, so here are the weigh-in results for UFC 119 “Mir vs. Cro Cop”. ...
ufc 119 is only a day away, and the final promotional pushes are being done to get fans excited and interested in a card that sees Frank Mir take on Mirko Filipovic in the main event. We at Fighters.com have covered UFC 119 extensively, and I myself have recently posted my predictions for the event. Those predictions were primarily based on what questions I think will be answered come UFC 119, and the more I think about, the more I think that UFC 119 will answer some very important questions for some very important fighters. So here’s my list of the top 5 questions that UFC 119 will answer. ...
The upcoming ufc 119 event is rapidly approaching, and it looks to be a solid event from top to bottom. The main event fight between Mirko Filipovic and Frank Mir had recently come into question after it was revealed that “Cro Cop” had hurt himself in training. Apparently much ado was made about nothing, as the UFC recently put up a press release confirming that the PRIDE FC legend had been medically cleared to compete. Here’s what the official release said, as well as my predictions for the card. ...
Matt Serra has been through the fire and climbed the mountain once already in his career. If he beats Chris Lytle at UFC 119 this weekend, could he be back in the mix again in the UFC welterweight division title picture? In this video, go behind the scenes with Serra at his new state of the art MMA facility on Long Isalnd and listen to his concerns about fighting the red-hot Lytle in his hometown of Indianapolis. Click through to watch the video. ...
Matt Serra will undoubtedly go down as the single most unlikely UFC champion of all time, despite his obvious strengths, skills, and veteran status. Few can ever forget when he dethroned heavy favorite Georges St. Pierre at UFC 69 to become the UFC Welterweight Champion. Of course, it would all come crashing down when Serra returned after an injury to lose the belt right back to GSP, followed up by a loss to arch-rival Matt Hughes. But heading into his UFC 119 match against Chris Lytle, Serra, who most recently got himself back into the win column with a big KO over fellow veteran Frank Trigg, remains an optimist. ...
In part two of our three part interview series with Ray Longo, longtime Matt Serra trainer, we look back at one of the greatest upsets in the history of MMA when Serra won the welterweight belt defeating George St. Pierre at UFC 69. Longo takes us through the pre-fight thinking, why Luke Cummo’s fight on the same card played a role in the victory, and the lasting effect the knockout has had on St. Pierre’s fighting style. Longo is very candid in judging that St. Pierre has never been the same fighter since Serra pounded him out, and suggests there is a “panic” in his posture and with his corner team whenever he is in a stand-up situation. Never one to parse words, Longo goes further using the word “awful” when explaining St. Pierre’s current fighting style. Read on. ...
Long Island based trainer, Ray Longo, has watched up close all the twists and turns of Matt Serra’s career, from his opening UFC loss via knockout to Shonie Carter, through helping his star student plot the right hand that devastated George St. Pierre to shock the MMA world and win the welterweight belt in 2008. He has helped guide Serra’s recent career surge with a near finish of Matt Hughes and the KO of Frank Trigg. Longo has been a key part of the incredible Matt Serra journey, which he labels a “storybook tale.” The next chapter unfolds at UFC 119 as Serra squares off against Chris Lytle with Longo right by his side. In part one of this three part interview, Longo remembers the early days, early losses, and touches on the Lytle fight ahead. In part two, (coming soon) he relives the glorious win over GSP and why Serra changed St. Pierre’s fighting style forever. In part three we zero in on Chris Lytle and how Team Serra-Longo plans to beat the Indiana native at UFC 119. ...
2010 is drawing closer and closer to a close, and with UFC 118 now over and done with, there are only a handful of major-name events left for MMA in 2010. Despite that, I think the end of the year will have some of 2010’s best fights. There’s still a lot of great action left to look forward to, so here are my top 5 (officially announced) fights I’m looking forward to for the rest of 2010. ...
Heading into his UFC 118 Lightweight Championship fight with current champion Frank Edgar, former UFC Lightweight and Welterweight Champion BJ Penn has perhaps never been more focused on getting his belt back. Penn lost his Lightweight championship at UFC 112 via a very controversial Unanimous Decision loss to Edgar, a decision that was in fact so controversial that it convinced UFC President Dana White and other assorted UFC top brass to make an immediate rematch. Penn’s focus is entirely zeroed-in on reclaiming his championship and returning to his once-dominant ways, but Penn recently stated that a return to the UFC’s Welterweight division was not out of the question. ...
Hello once more fans and friends and welcome back to another edition of “Great Moments in MMA History”. Today’s momentous induction celebrates what is undoubtedly the most shocking victory in MMA history. It will likely be remembered as the crowning achievement of MMA veteran Matt Serra’s career, while also being remembered as the lowest point for one of MMA’s best and brightest, the phenomenal Georges St. Pierre. And it happened in my hometown, while I was busy watching Cinderella (more on that anecdotal story further into the induction). It’s Matt Serra defeating GSP, and it was one of the most shocking moments in the history of our sport. ...
Matt Serra is a busy guy, he is preparing for Chris Lytle at UFC 119 and managing his new state of the art training facility in Huntington, Long Island. On Wednesday, he took some time to speak with me about Lytle and his career. That report will come later in August. However, in this video, he also shared his thoughts on Roy Nelson, Chael Sonnen and the other main card fights coming up in Oakland this Saturday. Good Stuff. Click through for the video exclusive to Fighters.com. ...
UFC 119 recently received an impressive main event in the form of Frank Mir vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira 2, and has quickly become a very interesting fight card filled with stars like the aforementioned main-event fighters, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Sean Sherk, and most recently, Chris “Lights Out” Lytle and Matter “The Terror” Serra. The scrappy veterans will take on each other once again, almost four years after they stepped inside the Octagon to crown the winner of The Ultimate Fighter Season 4: "The Comeback". Serra would go on to shock the world and beat Georges St. Pierre for the UFC Welterweight Championship. Lytle would have an up-and-down career against mostly strong competition but nevertheless consistently entertained. ...
Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes (42-7) became the eighth person inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame on Friday. ...
Saturday the UFC will be live in Abu Dhabi for UFC 112 and we will witness Fighters.com eighth-ranked and former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes (41-7) taking another another Gracie. This time it is Renzo Gracie (13-6-1) who is tasked with the challenge of defeating the dominant wrestler. Sure, this is a fight of two past their prime fighters but there is more to this fight than just that. ...
“Terror” Matt Serra (10-6) will host the pre-UFC 111 Fight Club Q&A in Newark March 26, the UFC announced Wednesday. UFC Fight Club Q&A is a Q&A session held with a UFC fighter before each event. It's attended by fans who pay to join the UFC Fight Club and media. ...
There was once a time when the Gracie name struck fear in the hearts of their opponents. That time has passed and now Renzo Gracie (13-6-1) is headed to Abu Dahbi for UFC 112 to defend the family name and put them back on top. ...
UFC 109 took place last night and was an event I did a few articles on here. I wanted to take the time to eat some crow and give my thoughts on the event. First let me start by saying I was 100% wrong about Chael Sonnen (24-20-1). He dominated Fighters.com fourth-ranked “Great” Nate Marquardt (29-9-2). This is the first time we saw Nate unable to do anything for 14 minutes. He looked a bit lost off his back and other than two guillotine attempts he had nothing to offer in the way of submission offense. Congratulations to Chael for proving me wrong. ...
I thought I would sit down and make my picks for UFC 109 today. We usually make picks on MMA Gospel Radio and we made a few with The Fight Pastor however I have had more time to think and these are my official picks, enjoy. ...
There were no fights in the mixed martial arts welterweight top ten in January and, therefore, no movement in the rankings for February. Fighters.com and UFC Welterweight Champion "Rush" Georges St. Pierre (19-2) and fifth-ranked “Outlaw” Dan Hardy (23-6) are set to battle for the top spot at UFC 111 in Newark March 27. Predictions range far and wide, from Hardy has one foot in the grave to Hardy is the man to upset St. Pierre like "The Terror” Matt Serra (9-6) di at UFC 69 in Houston in 2007. ...
Fighters.com's ninth-ranked welterweight “Outlaw” Dan Hardy (23-6) took one small step ahead in the 170-pound rankings this month after winning a three-round unanimous decision over now tenth-ranked “Quick” Mike Swick (14-3) at UFC 105 in Manchester November 14 and a giant leap into a title fight versus Fighters.com and UFC Champion "Rush" Georges St. Pierre (19-2), probably at UFC 110 in Sydney February 21. ...
