At UFC 127 in Sydney, Australia, a lot of interesting upsets and unpredictable finishes occurred. Chief among them, I thought I would never see Michael Bisping finish someone on the feet, since collectively I've heard that he is the "pillow hands" of the middleweight division, that could have also been a whole lot of fighters that were in attendance at the Acer Arena were not necessarily the biggest fans of "The Count". While Bisping's feat was impressive in of itself, several men shined brighter and earned the evening's coveted "Fight Night" awards and all took home an additional $75k in bonus earnings. ...
ufc 127: “Penn vs. Fitch” marked only the second time in the UFC’s long history that the promotion traveled to the “Land Down Under”. With the UFC’s increasingly global scope, many are wondering where the UFC will go next, and if the UFC will continue to support the locations where it has found international success in the past. So how successful was UFC 127? And who took home the traditional post-fight awards? Read on for a complete rundown of UFC 127’s live attendance, gate receipts, and post-fight bonuses. ...
ufc 127 will mark only the second time the largest MMA promotion in the world has ventured into the Land Down Under, and the UFC is bringing what should be a fantastic card to Australia. In the main event, BJ Penn faces Jon Fitch in a key Welterweight showdown with very real, very serious championship implications. Recently, the UFC announced two more match-ups for the event, finalizing the line-up with eleven official bouts. Here are all the details. ...
In the growing list of brash trash-talkers looking to establish themselves in the UFC by earning the ire of both the fans and their opponents, it appears that a new challenger has emerged. At UFC 119, Sean McCorkle extended the losing streak of former PRIDE FC veteran Mark Hunt to six straight losses. McCorkle scored his second submission win via a submission hold (he has three wins via submission due to punches) when he caught Hunt in an armlock while Hunt was in McCorkle’s guard. McCorkle now faces Stefan Struve at December’s UFC 124: “St. Pierre vs. Koscheck 2” event, and in a recent interview, he let “Skyscraper” feel the sting of some precise verbal jabs. ...
Standing at 6'11, Stefan Struve is someone everyone notices, in or out of the cage. While he has garnered some disappointing losses since his inception to the ufc in 2009 against division standouts Junior dos Santos (UFC 95) and Roy Nelson (UFC Fight Night 21), he has also picked up some of the best come-from-behind wins, in recent memory. Beginning to make noise in the heavyweight division, "Skyscraper" will meet with perhaps his most well-known opponent to date, when he tangles with internet sensation, Sean McCorkle. ...
ufc 119: “Mir vs. Cro Cop” was a very physical night of fights for many of the performers competing on the night’s card, and as such, several injuries were sustained in the course of the event. The Indiana Gaming Commission has recently released their list of fighter suspensions following the event, and topping the charts are both Matt Serra and Mirko Filipovic, each of whom received indefinite suspensions. Even Mark Hunt was suspended indefinitely. Here’s how it all broke down. ...
Just how big is the UFC? Apparently it’s big enough that their recent UFC 119 event was one of the biggest in recorded Indiana history. According to MMAWeekly, 15,811 fans packed into the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana for a total gate of $1,613,337. Fans were treated to a slightly-underwhelming show that I honestly believe isn’t getting half the credit it deserves in the early days of reflection and post-fight analysis. The UFC opened up its pocketbooks after the event and issued $70,000 bonuses in the form of their often-used but sometimes-confusing “Of the Night” awards. Here’s who got what and why. ...
UFC 119 was an interesting event to say the very least. We saw Ryan Bader beat Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and cement his status as a top-division athlete. Chris Lytle put himself “into the mix” for the first time in years (some cynics would say “ever”) with his dominant performance over former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra. Sean Sherk returned and will likely become a lightning-rod of heated debate due to his controversial win over Evan Dunham. All this happened, and then Frank Mir knocked out Mirko Filipovic. So what’s next for the big winners and losers of UFC 119? Here are my thoughts. ...
Another UFC event has come and gone, and what a shocking (but perhaps also underwhelming?) night of fights it was. The Spike TV “Prelims Live” special delivered two great fights for free, setting up what would be a Pay-Per-View card with its fair share of highlights as well as not-so-good moments. In the main event, former UFC Heavyweight and Interim Heavyweight Champion Frank Mir put a dramatic end to what had been a largely underwhelming performance when he surprise-KO’d feared Croatian striker and semi-revered PRIDE legend Mirko Filipovic. Here are the full results to UFC 119: “Mir vs. Cro Cop” as well as my thoughts on the card. ...
The time for talk is finally over: UFC 119 is upon us. The event is scheduled to take place today at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana. The stacked card features Mirko Filipovic vs. Frank Mir, Ryan Bader vs. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Chris Lytle vs. Matt Serra, Evan Dunham vs. Sean Sherk, and more. Weigh-ins were held yesterday and not a single fighter came in over the limit. All the fights are official, so here are the weigh-in results for UFC 119 “Mir vs. Cro Cop”. ...
ufc 119 is only a day away, and the final promotional pushes are being done to get fans excited and interested in a card that sees Frank Mir take on Mirko Filipovic in the main event. We at Fighters.com have covered UFC 119 extensively, and I myself have recently posted my predictions for the event. Those predictions were primarily based on what questions I think will be answered come UFC 119, and the more I think about, the more I think that UFC 119 will answer some very important questions for some very important fighters. So here’s my list of the top 5 questions that UFC 119 will answer. ...
As we get closer and closer to the upcoming UFC 119 event, the UFC seems to be putting a lot of effort into minimizing the debut of former PRIDE FC fighter Mark Hunt. Ever since it was announced that Hunt had signed to the sport’s biggest MMA promotion, the consensus has been that it’s a bad move and makes the UFC look terrible. UFC President Dana White in particular vehemently asserts that Hunt would not be fighting in the promotion under normal circumstances, but that the UFC “owes” Hunt some fights stemming all the way back to the UFC’s 2007 buyout of PRIDE. But is Hunt’s debut being treated too harshly? Is Hunt not getting enough credit? Here are my thoughts. ...
The FEG officially added two more DREAM-rules bouts Wednesday to their New Year’s Eve Dynamite!! card. Fighters.com’s ninth-ranked lightweight “Tobikan Judan” Shinya Aoki (15-3) will face third-ranked Eddie Alvarez (13-1), and heavyweight Mark Hunt (5-2) will face Jerome LeBanner (4-1-1). A fight with Aoki had been offered to fifth-ranked middleweight Yoshihiro Akiyama (12-2), but he decided not to fight at all NYE. "I'm tired of negotiating with [Akiyama]," said FEG executive Sadaharu Tanikawa. "He doesn't understand what fans expect from him and his position. I don't know the reason why he turned down the offer. I'm very disappointed in him." ...
In a stunning cyclone of events, DREAM Lightweight Tournament reserve fighter “Hellboy” Joachim Hansen (19-7-1) captured the DREAM Lightweight Championship in Osaka Sunday night. Hansen was originally eliminated from the tournament at DREAM.3 11 May after dropping a decision to Eddie Alvarez (15-1), but was drafted into the final after slapping an armbar on “Black Mamba” Kultar Gill (10-8) at 2:33 of round one in the tournament's reserve fight Sunday. Ironically, Hansen replaced Alvarez after Alvarez knocked out “Crusher” Tatsuya Kawajiri (22-5-2) at 7:35 of round one in a thrilling slugfest. A right hook, right uppercut combo floored "Crusher" and Alvarez pounded the Japanese fighter out, but sustained a cut over his right eye in the action that would prevent him from fighting for the title. Tournament favorite “Tobikan Judan” Shinya Aoki (17-3) contorted himself into the final versus Hansen in a unanimous decision over “Uno Shoten” Caol Uno (25-11-4), throwing everything in the "Judan" book at Uno: armbar, triangle choke, heel hook, rear naked choke, gogoplata, etc. Though Aoki wasn't able to stop Uno, he dominated for the decision. The final was set: Aoki v Hansen; and, in most people's minds, already settled in favor of the Japanese favorite. ...
Former PRIDE heavyweights Mark Hunt (5-3) and “Demolition Man” Alistair Overeem (27-11) will clash at DREAM.5 21 July, the organization announced Saturday. Hunt will look to rebound from his last two fights, submission losses to Fighters.com’s sixth-ranked heavyweight “Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko (27-1) and fifth-ranked “Babyface Assassin” Josh Barnett (22-5). Overeem will look to extend his two-fight win streak. He KO’d Tae Hyun Lee (1-2) in 36 seconds at DREAM.4 in June. ...
DREAM announced Wednesday that three more bouts have been added to the 21 July DREAM.5 event: Yoshihiro Akiyama (10-1; 2 NC) v Katsuyori Shibata (2-4) “Hellboy” Joachim Hansen (17-7-1) v “Black Mamba” Kultar Gill (9-7) Kuniyoshi Hironaka (11-5) v Motoki Miyazawa (4-0) Mark Hunt (5-3) is also slated to fight, but no opponent has been named. Fighters.com’s fourth-ranked middleweight Akiyama has not fought since New Year’s Eve, when he faced eighth-ranked “Grabaka Hitman” Kazuo Misaki (20-8-2; 1 NC). Akiyama was KO’d by an illegal soccer kick, ending the fight in a No Contest. ...
In an interview with Rogue Magazine, Kiwi kickboxer Mark Hunt (5-3) revealed details of his return to combat after 15-months off. The article reports that Hunt will return to K-1 kickboxing versus "Hightower" Semmy Schilt at K-1's Europe Grand Prix Final in Amsterdam 26 April; however, K-1's website posts the bout as the main event at the World Grand Prix 2008 in Yokohama 13 April. "It was part of the contract I was offered," Hunt said of the Schilt fight. "I did not want to fight K-1 since I have won the title already, but always up for a challenge; and, when the window of opportunity opens for me, I try to always take it 'cause it does not always open, you know?" It'll be Hunt's last kickboxing bout. "Well, it is only one K-1 fight to start with; the rest of my contract is all MMA," Hunt promised. The hard-headed Hunt fought MMA exclusively in PRIDE, until that promotion's demise. He scored back-to-back split decision victories over "The Axe Murderer" Wanderlei Silva (31-8-1) and "Cro Cop" Mirko Filipovic (22-6-2), followed by consecutive Kimura submission losses to "The Babyface Assasin" Josh Barnett (21-5) and Fedor Emelianenko (27-1). "K-1 and DREAM are partners so the rest of my MMA fights are with DREAM," Hunt explained, and designated 8 May for his return to mixed martial arts. "[A rematch with Emelianenko] is another fight that will happen in the near future," Hunt said. "I can't say anymore!" MMA math is trash, but MMA geometry? Hunt's MMA contract is in DREAM. Emelianenko is reportedly divorcing M-1 Global to seek fights in other promotions. Hunt promises a second dance with Emelianenko. Assuming Hunt's promise isn't just a DREAM on his part.... Well, you see the same dots I do. See if you can't connect them. ...
