Joe Stevenson welcomes Danny Castillo into the UFC in March
Joe Stevenson welcomes Danny Castillo into the UFC in March

Joe Stevenson may be on his last leg in the UFC. The former title challenger is now 2-4 over his last six fights, recently having been knocked out by fellow "The Ultimate Fighter" veteran Mac Danzig in devastating fashion last December at UFC 124 in Montreal, Canada. Now, instead of preempting for a fight that could implicate his stay within the worlds largest mixed martial arts promotion. Stevenson will be taken on newcomer Danny Castillo. He may be a UFC newbie, but this dynamic lightweight fighter has seen his fair share of battles inside the cage and will prove to be a difficult challenge for a Stevenson who is hoping to resurrect his career. ...

Despite Several Setbacks, Both Duane "Bang" Ludwig and Joe "Daddy" Stevenson Will Remain UFC Employees

The ufc’s increasingly competitive nature has been the subject of much debate recently. UFC President Dana White has, as always, been brash and single-minded in his views: he believes that a UFC performer should perform at his best and give his all in each and every single fight, or else he won’t be a UFC performer for long. This has led to the recent high-profile firings of talent like Todd Duffee, Efrain Escudero, and Gerald Harris. But recently, despite their up-and-down careers, word recently came down that the UFC has decided to retain the services of both Duane Ludwig and Joe Stevenson. Here are all the details. ...

UFC 124 Post-Fight Bonuses Paint a Clear Picture, Dana White Adamant: "No More Fan Votes"

UFC 124: “St. Pierre vs. Koscheck 2” was a banner event for the promotion, one of the best MMA shows of the year in fact. Fans were treated to several impressive finishes, several entertaining three-round wars, and a fantastic performance turned in by the one and only Georges St. Pierre. The UFC recently handed out its traditional post-fight bonuses, including a “Fight of the Night” award that was selected via fan vote for the first time ever. And according to Dana White, that's never going to happen again. Here are all the details. ...

Hello once more fans and friends and welcome to another edition of “What’s Next”, where I pull out my trusty crystal globe and take a glimpse at what I think the future holds for the big winners and losers of a major MMA event. UFC 124: “St. Pierre vs. Koscheck 2” was definitely a major event, and it had plenty of big winners and losers. In the main event, Georges St. Pierre utterly outclassed Josh Koscheck in perhaps one of the best performances GSP has ever given us in his vaunted career. So let’s get right to it with another edition of “What’s Next.” ...

UFC 124: "St. Pierre vs. Koscheck 2" Picks and Predictions

On December 11, the UFC will present its final show for the first decade of the new millennium- UFC 124: “St. Pierre vs. Koscheck 2”. And what a decade it’s been for what is now the world’s largest and most prestigious MMA organization. The UFC and MMA in general saw the rise and fall of countless legends throughout the decade, and as a whole, the fight game evolved to where a master of one technique could be beaten and even outright humbled by a true Mixed Martial Artist. And UFC 124 features one of the most well-rounded MMA fighters ever, defending his championship for the fifth straight time. As is customary for a big card, here are my official picks and predictions for some of the big match-ups of UFC 124: “St. Pierre vs. Koscheck 2”. ...

A Clash of TUF Champions Set for UFC 124: "St. Pierre vs. Koscheck 2"

It’s always an interesting occasion when two winners of the popular ufc reality TV show “The Ultimate Fighter” meet in the Octagon. The star-studded UFC 124: “St. Pierre vs. Koscheck 2” event will now feature just such an occasion. According to MMA Mania, a bout between TUF Season 2 champion Joe Stevenson and TUF Season 6 champion Mac Danzig is in the works and close to being finalized. ...

Shinya Aoki, candid and direct, sounds off on Western MMA scene

Shinya Aoki is probably one of the most reserved fighters in the sport. Although his in-ring antics against Mizuto Hirota at "Dynamite!! 2009" would inidicate otherwise, the grappling ace usually keeps to himself and refrains from doing a lot of outlandish things. Maybe that's why the Japanese have embraced him as their leading man in the world of mixed martial arts. However, most recently, the famed Judoka has stepped out of his shell and lit the MMA world abuzz once again, with his almost brutal honesty, on how he views the Western MMA scene (um...us) and how they can benefit by tuning into DREAM, once in a while. ...

The Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia on February 21 George Sotiropoulos (11-2) will face "Daddy" Joe Stevenson (31-9) in a lightweight fight. This is a fight that will propel George up the ladder in the 155 division and make a contender. ...

Joe Stevenson Says No to BJ Penn to Beat UFC's Champion

"Daddy" Joe Stevenson (31-9) was contacted by Fighters.com and UFC lightweight champion "The Prodigy" BJ Penn (15-5-1) with an offer to come train with him. Stevenson told him no thanks because he believes he will get another title shot before the end of the year. Apparently BJ wanted a strong wrestler to train with for his fight against "The Answer" Frank Edgar (11-1)at UFC 112 in Abu Dhabi. Joe must be losing his mind to say no to this opportunity. ...

Florian photo courtesy of Josh Hedges and Zuffa, LLC.Fighters.com’s seventh-ranked lightweight “KenFlo” Kenny Florian (11-3) scored a victory with a rear naked choke of “Daddy” Joe Stevenson (29-8) at 4:03 of the first round in a fast-paced lightweight match-up at UFC 91 in Las Vegas Saturday night. "I want to come out here and make a statement," Florian announced after the fight.  "I want B.J.'s belt!" UFC President Dana White had promised the winner a title shot versus UFC and Fighters.com's Lightweight Champion "Prodigy" B.J. Penn (13-4-1). For Florian, it'll be his second shot at the UFC belt.  Florian lost a unanimous decision to fifth-ranked "Muscle Shark" Sean Sherk (33-3-1) for the UFC title at UFC 64 in October 2006. Florian started the action with a left low kick.  Both fighters were quick on their feet as they exchanged blows.  Florian caught Stevenson with a high kick; but, Stevenson stalked him after landing a few punches. ...

The winner of the lightweight bout between Fighters.com’s seventh-ranked lightweight “KenFlo” Kenny Florian (10-3) and “Daddy” Joe Stevenson (29-7) will get a crack at champion “Prodigy” BJ Penn’s (13-4-1) title, UFC President Dana White promised Thursday at the UFC 91 press conference. Florian and Stevenson are featured on Saturday’s UFC 91: Couture vs Lesnar card in Las Vegas. White said the opportunity would come after Penn’s fight versus Welterweight Champion “Rush” Georges St. Pierre (17-2) at UFC 94 in Vegas 31 January. Both Florian and Stevenson had a chance at the lightweight belt before, but Florian lost a unanimous decision to fifth-ranked “Muscle Shark” Sean Sherk (33-3-1) in October 2006, and Stevenson was submitted via rear naked choke by Penn in January. Florian has won all five of his fights since then, most recently earning a unanimous decision over Roger Huerta (20-2-1) in August. Stevenson won his last fight, submitting Gleison Tibau (14-5) with a second-round guillotine in July.Florian photo courtesy of Josh Hedges and Zuffa, LLC. ...

UFC's Kenny Florian is "Go, Go, Go" Before UFC 91

Florian photo courtesy of Josh Hedges and Zuffa, LLC.Fighters.com's seventh-ranked lightweight "KenFlo" Kenny Florian (10-3) will try to earn a title shot...again versus "Daddy" Joe Stevenson (29-7) at UFC 91 in Las Vegas Saturday.  He spoke exclusively with Fighters.com about that fight and his life outside of the Octagon. Fighters.com: What is your greatest strength going into the Stevenson fight?  What do you think is his biggest strength against you? Kenny Florian: Yeah, you know, hmm… I think my biggest strength is probably my versatility in this fight.  I think me being versatile, I feel like I can kinda do it all.  I feel I’m more a well-rounded fighter than him.  I feel like he’s a fighter who does mixed martial arts and I’m a mixed martial arts fighter, and I think there’s a difference in that.  And, I think his biggest strength is his experience.  He has an insane amount of experience, a lot more than myself; so, that certainly can be an advantage. Fighters.com: Where are you training and who are you training with?   Who’s helping you prepare for your upcoming fight against Stevenson? ...

Joe Stevenson Earns Black Belt from Drysdale

“Daddy” Joe Stevenson (29-7) earned his black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu this past Saturday by highly decorated BJJ champion and 2007 ADCC Open Weight winner Robert Drysdale. Drysdale told Fighters.com, "Joe is one of the best grapplers I have rolled with.  His skills are unquestionable.  Not only has he been training for a real long time, but he is better than 99 percent of the black belts out there.  And I've rolled with almost all of them!  I am happy to be part of his fighting career." Stevenson, who was the TUF 2 welterweight winner but has since dropped to lightweight, was awarded the belt at his Cobra Kai gym in his hometown of Victorville, CA. Stevenson also trains occasionally at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, where Drysdale is the head BJJ instructor. Stevenson has won three of his last four fights via guillotine choke and is gearing up for his match with Fighters.com’s seventh-ranked lightweight and fellow BJJ black belt “KenFlo” Kenny Florian (10-3) this weekend at UFC 91: Couture vs Lesnar.Stevenson photo courtesy of Josh Hedges and Zuffa, LLC. ...

Fighters.com's September Lightweight Rankings

Fighters.com's Lightweight Champion "Prodigy" B.J. Penn's (13-4-1) three-fight run at lightweight will end in Las Vegas 31 January when Penn returns to welterweight to fight Fighters.com’s Welterweight Champion “Rush” Georges St. Pierre (17-2) for the UFC welterweight title. Why? Penn photo courtesy of Josh Hedges and Zuffa, LLC.(Well, besides the obvious jack the UFC stands to profit on the main event.) But, UFC President Dana White himself has claimed Penn's best weight class is 155 pounds; and, Penn made much ballyhoo about getting serious and slimming down to 155 pounds, his natural fighting weight. Penn has never fought above 155 with a physique that could be described as anything but "pudgy". Penn is also 0-2 in his last two 170-pound fights in the Octagon, which must make UFC welterweight contenders wonder if they can get some Vaseline. In Saitama, north of Tokyo, 24 August, top lightweight contender "Fireball Kid" Takanori Gomi (29-3) won a unanimous decision versus tough, but relatively unknown Korean champ Seung Hwan Bang (5-2). ...

UFC President Dana White confirmed the participation of Fighters.com’s seventh-ranked lightweight “KenFlo” Kenny Florian (10-3) versus “Daddy” Joe Stevenson (29-8) at UFC 91 in Portland, OR, 15 November, reported Yahoo! Sports Thursday. Stevenson photo courtesy of Josh Hedges and Zuffa, LLC. It will be the promotion’s first event in Portland. Also confirmed was the anticipated welterweight title fight between Fighters.com’s Welterweight Champion “Rush” Georges St. Pierre (17-2) and Fighters.com’s Lightweight Champion “Prodigy” B.J. Penn (13-4-1) at UFC 93 on 31 January, which is SuperBowl Weekend. “KenFlo” won a unanimous decision over “El Matador” Roger Huerta (20-2-1) at UFC 87 earlier this month. Stevenson submitted Gleison Tibau (15-6) with a second-round guillotine choke in his last fight at UFC 86 in July. St. Pierre battled Jon Fitch (17-3) for five rounds to a unanimous decision victory 9 August. Penn TKO’d fifth-ranked “Muscle Shark” Sean Sherk (32-3-1) in the third round in May to retain his UFC lightweight title. ...

UFC 86 Weights From Sin City

"For all you Rampage haters, you might as well get used to me," Fighters.com's Light Heavyweight Champion "Rampage" Quinton Jackson (28-6) announced to the crowd at the UFC 86 weigh-ins in Las Vegas Friday.  "I'ma be here for a long time," he added, then flashed the peace sign. Rampage weighed in at 205-pounds, as did eighth-ranked title challenger Forrest Griffin (15-4). Xtreme Couture's Griffin said, "It's nice to fight in your hometown.  Thank you, guys." Griffin smirked in the gaze of an intense Rampage stare down. All fighters on Saturday night's card made weight. Only lightweight Gleison Tibau (15-5) missed the mark, but by the allowed one pound at 156-pounds.  Tibau will fight "Daddy" Joe Stevenson (33-8). 6'4" lightweight Corey Hill (2-0) looked absolutely emaciated at 155-pounds. ...

Daddy and Tibau Added to 86

UFC.com has added former UFC lightweight title contender "Daddy" Joe Stevenson (28-8) versus Brazilian Gleison Tibau (15-5) to their UFC 86 fight card to be held in Vegas 5 July. Tibau returns from a razor-thin UD loss to Tyson Griffin (11-1) in Tibau's first fight dropping to 155-pounds from welterweight at UFC 81. "Daddy" lost his title challenge to "The Prodigy" B.J. Penn (12-4-1) in January by second-round rear naked choke submission. The bout is currently listed on the PPV broadcast card and just beneath the main event UFC Light Heavyweight title fight between Champion "Rampage" Quinton Jackson (29-6) and Forrest Griffin (15-4); but, one suspects a more marketable co-main event will eventually knock the fight lower on the card. ...

The Prodigy: "I'm already back in the gym."

"I already forgot about the Joe Stevenson fight.  That's the past already," UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn told KWXX 94.7 in Hilo Tuesday. Penn choked Joe "Daddy" Stevenson to submission at 4:02 of round two at UFC 80 last month to claim the strap vacated by Sean "The Muscle Shark" Sherk after Sherk's suspension for banned substances. "I took seven days off completely.  I did nothing. And, I'm already back in the gym," Penn announced. Penn has been widely panned for lack of conditioning. "Before I used to be bummed.  I'm like, I wanted to take at least a month or two months and go have a good time," Penn admitted. Since posting an "O"-fer in 2006 versus Georges St. Pierre and Matt Hughes at welterweight, Penn has re-dedicated himself at 155-pounds. "I want to do this!  It's time to go get Sean.  The belt means everything.  Nothing matters but the belt!" The two champions, current and former, will determine the top of the lightweight division in Las Vegas. "I'm pretty sure it's May 24th," Penn said.  "I'm pretty much guaranteed on that." When asked about his UFC 80 victory, Penn confided, "All the preparation and everything pays off.  I felt too good.  I felt guilty." After the fight, when Dana White wrapped the UFC belt around Penn's waist, he had one thing on his mind:  "I'm not gonna cry!  I'm not gonna cry like last time!  Because it's so embarrassing." ...
