Eric Koch takes on Cub Swanson in a WEC throwback, for their UFC debuts this March

Some featherweight action will be hitting Louisville, Ky. as Erik Koch and Cub Swanson are set to collide inside the octagon. Swanson, a veteran of the now defunct World Extreme Cagefighting promotion will take on Koch in a bout that could have likely happened some time ago, however their paths will now cross under the worlds largest mixed martial arts banner, the UFC. Since the assimilation of the WEC into their sister promotion, a field of fighters have joined the UFC ranks in hopes to add to an already lavish roster, and as far as 145-pound fighters go, the fans in attendance for "UFC on Versus 3" will be in for a treat. ...

WEC 52 Bonuses: 10k go to Koch, Swanson, Semerzier, and Faber

With their second to last show in the books, the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion put together yet another solid show. It's sad to think that all of these free shows that have been one of my prized possessions on the Versus network will be whisked away and assimilated with the UFC. But, bigger paydays for these guys outweigh my own selfish needs. And speaking of bigger paydays, a few of last nights competitors picked some much deserved bonus earnings for their efforts. ...

Benavidez stands to earn more than Champion--why?
Benavidez stands to earn more than Champion--why?

It's no secret that Joseph Benavidez is one of the WEC's hottest commodities. With his fast-paced style and charismatic demeanor, he's an easy fan favorite, reminiscent of mentor, training partner, and friend Urijah Faber. But, doe's that mean that Benavidez, a challenger to champion Dominick Cruz' title, should earn more then the number one guy in his weight class? ...

WEC:50, Cruz vs Benavidez II now Official after Weigh-Ins

Open Message to Jens Pulver: Please Retire
Open Message to Jens Pulver: Please Retire

It’s always hard when a fighter you once loved refuses to go quietly into the night and prolongs a career that should have ended years ago. The absolute best of the old-school UFC Lightweights, Jens Pulver has now become a shadow of a shadow of a shadow of his former self. Pulver has lost eight of his last nine fights, and were it not for a Submission win over Cub Swanson at WEC 31 back in 2007, the former UFC Lightweight Champion who famously defeated BJ Penn would have last won a fight four years ago, instead of three. Despite losing four straight fights via submission, three of them via guillotine choke, Pulver recently restated his desire to keep fighting, and said that nobody can tell him when to retire. I’ll fully agree to the only person ever being able to retire Jens Pulver being Jens Pulver, but as someone who loved him in his hey-day, it’s getting sadder and sadder to watch Pulver’s continued fall from grace. ...

WEC 48: Leonard Garcia to Fight Chan Sung Jung, Not Cub Swanson

WEC featherweight Cub Swanson (14-3) has withdrawn from his WEC 48 matchup versus “Korean Zombie” Chan Sung Jung (10-1) in Sacramento April 24 with injured hands, according to Sherdog. ...

Faber Signs WEC Contract, WEC 44 Bolstered With Nunes v Davis

“California Kid” Urijah Faber (22-3) signed a multi-fight, multi-year contract to return to Zuffa, LLC.-owned World Extreme Cagefighting, announced WEC general manager Reed Harris on MMA Junkie Radio Monday. ...

Swanson to Fight Takaya at WEC 37

Featherweight Cub Swanson (11-2) will face “Streetfight Bancho” Hiroyuki Takaya (9-5-1) at WEC 37: Torres vs Tapia 3 December in Las Vegas, Swanson announced via MySpace. Swanson was submitted in 35 seconds by “Little Evil” Jens Pulver’s (22-9-1) guillotine in December 2007, but rebounded in February to submit Donny Walker (2-4) via rear naked choke. Takaya, a Shooto and K-1 veteran, was KO’d by “Bad Boy” Leonard Garcia (11-3) in round one at WEC 32 in February. ...
