Ever since it began back when the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion was still around, the UFC’s “UFC Live” events, also known as “UFC on Versus”, have been an interesting mix of fights and fighters. When it was first announced that Cheick Kongo would be fighting Pat Barry, I honestly found myself quite surprised at how much I liked the sound of that fight. I think it’s an honest assessment to say that both men are one-dimensional kickboxers in a multi-dimensional sport, but that does a disservice to their high level of striking. And you know what else? I think both men suffer from some undue criticism. I’m honestly really looking forward to this fight, and here’s why. ...

Frank Mir is no stranger to controversy. In fact, his rivalry with current UFC Champion Brock Lesnar may be one of the bitterest rivalries in recent history. From saying that he was thinking of dropping down to Light Heavyweight to saying that he wanted Lesnar to be the first man to die from Octagon-related injuries, Frank Mir knows how to stir the pot. However, it appears that Mir wants no part of a rivalry with his next opponent, famed PRIDE FC wrecking machine Mirko Filipovic, who replaced an injured Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and will headline the UFC 119 event against Mir. In fact, Mir recently said during an appearance on “The MMA Hour” that he felt that Mirko Cro Cop was still a dangerous opponent even in today’s highly competitive UFC Heavyweight division. Since heavyweight boxing champion “Lights Out” James Toney (0-0) signed to fight in the UFC, high profile heavyweights have stepped up to welcome Toney into the Octagon.  Among those heavyweights are The Ultimate Fighter 10 champion “Big Country” Roy Nelson (15-4) and former UFC champion “The Natural” Randy Couture (18-10). But, that reminds me of a story my friend's dad - good ol' Paul Heck - told me years ago.  He's a Vietnam veteran and told us how he enlisted to go to Vietnam.  They'd ask incoming soldiers to rank the top three destinations they would like to be stationed.  Seventeen-years old and seemingly invincible, Mr. Heck scribbled Vietnam atop his list.  He wanted to fight!  But, he didn't realize then that the military never sent soldiers to Vietnam if they listed Vietnam as their top choice.  The military figured that if you wanted to go to Vietnam you either had a death wish or would be too reckless in battle.  They wanted soldiers in Vietnam who wanted to come home alive.  So, Mr. Heck was stationed in The Philippines and served honorably. ...

At UFC's Ultimate Fight Night 21 in Charlotte Wednesday night The Ultimate Fighter 10 champion “Big Country” Roy Nelson(15-4) knocked out 6'11" heavyweight prospect “Skyscraper” Stefan Struve (23-4) in 39 seconds, an impressive win for a "fat guy" with a nearly one-foot height disadvantage. I noted to a friend recently that an MMA Junkie article listing the UFC's top heavyweight talent included, of course, UFC champion and Fighters.com's second-ranked heavyweight Brock Lesnar (4-1), his title challenger Shane Carwin (10-0), next in line Cain Velasquez(9-0), ”Cigano” Junior dos Santos (10-1), recently defeated former UFC champion Frank Mir(13-4), and former PRIDE and interim UFC champion “Minotauro” Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira(32-6-1).  The article also threw Struve and Cheick Kongo(14-6-1) into the mix at the top of the UFC's heavyweight division...but no Nelson.  My point to my friend was that I wouldn't mind leaving Nelson out of a discussion of the UFC's top heavyweights, but if you're going to throw in Struve and Kongo, you have to include Nelson. ...
