With the recent news that Chael Sonnen will make his much-anticipated ufc return in a fight with Brian Stann, Sonnen has been busy doing what he does best: getting back into the public eye through a series of mostly-hilarious, sometimes-bizarre interviews. Another one recently hit the internet, and in it, Sonnen calls out all manner of people, although mostly just the people he’s called out before. He does toss a few new insults their way, however. And in a very interesting twist, it seems as if Sonnen’s trash-talking strategy for his fight with Stann will center on calling out everyone but Stann. Here are all the details. ...
Recently, it’s been more or less confirmed that Chael Sonnen will be making his return to active MMA competition later this year in a fight against Brian Stann. There were rumors that Sonnen would fight Lyoto Machida, but that appears to no longer be the case. As expected, there’s a lot of fierce debate going on right now as to what Sonnen’s return means for the UFC, its Middleweight division, and MMA in general. I’m no stranger to topics revolving around Chael Sonnen, so here’s what I think. ...
How successful was ufc 130? There are several ways we can gauge this. One popular but difficult way is by fan opinion, which can vary wildly at any given moment. For the most part, UFC 130 garnered a mixed reaction, with some calling it average, some calling it o.k., and others calling it below-average. But in terms of pure numbers, how many seats did the UFC 130 card fill up, and how many dollars did the people in those seats spend throughout the night? We now know all that, plus the UFC’s typical “End of Night” bonuses. ...
Welcome back fans and friends, it’s time for another edition of my “A Closer Look At UFC 130” series. This special three-day mini-series event will focus on all of UFC 130’s many fights, covering them in detail as well as providing some early commentary and predictions for all the major bouts. With the Facebook and Spike TV cards behind us, it’s now time to focus on the Pay-Per-View card. All five fights will be covered separately, in order to fully highlight how diverse and interesting the main UFC 130 card is. We’ll begin with a major Middleweight showdown between Brian Stann and Jorge Santiago. ...
Jorge Santiago has emerged as one of the top middleweight fighters in the world since his exit from the UFC in 2006. After a brief stint with the promotion where he went 1-2, with consecutive knockout losses to hard hitters Chris Leben and Alan Belcher, respectively, he has since gone 11-1 since his exit and things are only looking up. During this stretch, Santiago has posted two wins over Japanese legend and perennial top-10 fighter Kazuo Misaki, he avenged his only loss in the 12-fight stint by dominating Mamed Khalidov in their rematch and has since become the Sengoku middleweight champion. Now that he has re-signed with the UFC earlier this year, things began looking up for the Brazilian, however after an abrupt split from his previous home of American Top Team, many have wondered where Santiago lies mentally, but he insists that he is better than ever. ...
After weeks a speculation, everyone can finally now call Jorge Santiago a UFC fighter. The former Sengoku middleweight champion has since left the Japanese based promotion after beating all of the organization's best 185-pounder's, including two exciting title bouts with the legendary Kazuo Misaki, finishing off the perennial top-10 fighter in the fifth-round (first with a rear-naked choke and second with a TKO in the waning moments of the bout). Since his exit from the UFC in 2006 following a 1-2 stint, Santiago has emerged as one of the best fighter's in his weight class, and now the American Top Team product will have the chance to reassert himself as a possible title contender in the world's largest organization as he will next be taking on budding contender Brian Stann this May. ...
While it's been rumored for the last couple of weeks now, it looks like it's now official. Current Sengoku middleweight champion, or former depending on the context, Jorge Santiago is now ufc bound. The Brazilian mixed martia artist will be making his second-foray into the octagon following a leave in 2006, where after he has since become reognized as one of the best fighters in his weight class. Santiago will have the chance to reassert himself as one of the best in the UFC should he make an expected debut come this May against budding contender Brian Stann, The American Top Team product had been expected to have signed with the UFC as early as last week, however Jorge insisted that he has not signed any paperwork as of yet that would indicate an immediate return to the cage. However, MMAWeekly.com has been able to confirm with sources close to the UFC that they have recieved Santiago's signature on paper and expect the 185-pound dynamo to return to the octagon very shortly. Jorge initially debuted within the promotion in 2006 with a knockout win over Justin Levens. However, a victim of his exciting style, Santiago was later on the recieving end of two consecutive knockout losses to notables Chris Leben and Alan Belcher which signaled his exit. Since then, the ATT star has notched up victories over the likes of UFC veterans Jeremy Horn, Sean Salmon and Trevor Prangley--finishing all of them inside of the first-round. Next Jorge made his way to Japan where he captured the engoku middleweight title, defeating perennial top-10 superstar Kazuo Misaki in the tournmanet finals with a fifth-round rear-naked choke. He defended his title twice after avenging a loss to Mamed Khalidov and defeating Misaki once again, this time with a fifth-round TKO. Their rematch has been considered by many to be one of the greatest fights in MMA history, and was honored as such at the 2010 World MMA Awards hosted by Fighters Only. Jorge, 30, is 11-1 since his release from the UFC in 06', avenging the lone loss against Mamed. Santigo has been rumored for sometime to be facing Brian Stann upon his return, which is anticipated for UFC 130 this May. So, MMA peeps, what do you think of the news? How do you think Jorge will fair in his second outing with the promotion? Sound off in the comment section below. ...
After his crushing victory over Chris Leben at ufc 125, many fans were left wondering what’s next for Brian Stann. A popular on-again/off-again rumor pitted Stann against Wanderlei Silva, but according to new reports, that match has officially been put on the back-burner. Instead, Stann is now expected to face the returning Jorge Santiago at UFC 130 in May. Here are all the details. ...
A previously reported middleweight match-up pitting middleweights Brian Stann and legend Wanderlei Silva is not yet a done deal for ufc 130, a future pay-per-view event which is anticipated to be headlined by a lightweight title fight featuring champion Frankie Edgar against top contender Gray Maynard. Dana White, President of the UFC, indicated less than a month ago that the proposed middleweight fight was something the organization was targeting for the May event, however such may not be the case, at least not quite yet. ...
For several reasons, ufc 125 “Resolution” has already emerged as the possible “Sleeper Hit” of the year, thanks in no small part to the epic second showdown between Frank Edgar and Gray Maynard. A large section of the fanbase doubted Edgar’s and Maynard’s ability to put on an exciting fight, but in the end, the two headlining attractions of UFC 125 gave us five amazing rounds of action in a fight that has already emerged as a “Fight of the Year” contender. The UFC recently announced the hotly-anticipated third encounter between the two, as well as several other awesome bouts, for their upcoming UFC 130 show, which is now officially UFC 130 “Edgar vs. Maynard 3”. Here are all the details. ...
Former PRIDE middleweight champion Wanderlei Silva has stated that he would like to make a return to action by possibly March of this year. A slew of opponents have already thrown their name in the hat to face "The Axe Murderer" including Chris Leben, Chael Sonnen, Alan Belcher--and most recently Brian Stann. The former Marine came off of an impressive performance in his last outing when he took on "The Ultimate Fighter" veteran and former top contender in Leben, who he defeated with a deftly accurate array of strikes which eventually lead to a first-round TKO victory. ...
Brian Stann is a UFC veteran, a former WEC Light Heavyweight Champion, and a veteran of the United States Marine Corp. And at UFC 125 “Resolution”, he finally emerged as a legitimate threat in the UFC’s Middleweight division, beating back the always-dangerous Chris Leben and putting an end to what was arguably the best win-streak of Leben’s career. Moving forward, Stann could emerge as a legitimate championship contender by the time 2011 is through, so long as he faces the right opponents. And who should those opponents be? Here’s a Top 5 with just that in mind. ...
The after-shocks of UFC 125 "Resolution" will likely be felt for quite some time. Clay Guida beat feared striker Takanori Gomi by adopting a bizarre fighting style that saw him constantly ducking and dodging. Brian Stann made an immediate impact by TKO'ing Chris Leben. Dong Hyun Kim set himself up as a possible top-division talent, while in the main event, Frank Edgar and Gray Maynard fought to a draw in an amazing Lightweight encounter. As is customary for a major card, here's the latest edition of "What's Next?" featuring UFC 125: "Resolution". ...
The first MMA event of 2011 is now over and done with, fans and friends: UFC 125 “Resolution” is now a thing of the past. The event saw several memorable fights and several highlight-reel moments, both on the main card, the preliminary card televised for the first time on network television, and even the untelevised undercard. And in the main event, the two best Lightweight MMA fighters in the world proved many doubters wrong and gave us an early Fight of the Year contender for 2011, even though its decision was mired in controversy . Here are the full results as well as some early commentary for UFC 125 “Resolution”. ...
With two highly talented fighters, yet very soft spoken, at the top of the slate - UFC 125 will find its colorful side down the card mainly in the form of Chris Leben. The man called "The Crippler" has more than lived up that moniker in his last two fights stopping Aaron Simpson via TKO and Yoshihiro Akiyama via submission. Now, he has his hands full with a beast of a man in the heavy handed Brian Stann. Leben though, will welcome a fight against a pure striker and which will harken back to his early years in MMA when he was primarily just a striker with a crude skill set. To prepare for UFC 125 here is your Chris Leben homework. Watch Leben's 2003 battle with Otto Olson in Seattle. This type of affair has become indicative to how Leben fights. Trouble early, then lookout! ...
By John Moody They say styles make fights in the cage. In the case of Brian Stann vs. Chris Leben, this fight is made by virtue of their styles outside of the cage. Brian Stann is a well documented war hero from his service in Iraq and was awarded the Silver Star, America’s third highest award for valor in combat. A graduate and former football star at the Naval Academy, Stann enters his UFC 125 fight against Chris Leben as the quintessential vision of American goodness with a serving of apple pie to boot carving a squeaky clean image. ...
UFC 125 “Resolution” features an incredible cast of UFC performers. Throughout the course of one night, we’ll see wrestlers, strikers, grapplers, submission specialists, and talented all-rounders from many different weight divisions. And in the main event, Frank Edgar defends the UFC Lightweight Championship against Gray Maynard. As is customary when a big card is just around the corner, here’s another edition of “Picks and Predictions”, featuring my thoughts on who I think will win and why. ...
MMA fans have a lot to look forward to this week, as not one but two high-profile fight cards are scheduled to go down. I’ve already talked at length about the upcoming DREAM/K-1 super-card “DYNAMITE!! 2010”, but the one and only UFC is holding its own New Year celebration. UFC 125 on New Year’s Day is fast-approaching, and features both a fantastic main event and several great undercard fights. So what is UFC 125: “Resolution” all about? Let’s find out with a new edition of “Crash Course”. ...
Another ufc event has recently been made official, with eleven bouts now confirmed to be taking place. While anything could happen between now and then, the UFC recently released their lineup for UFC 125: “Resolution”, which takes place on New Year’s Day and features Frank Edgar defending his UFC Lightweight Championship against the only man that’s ever beaten him, Gray Maynard. With credit going to MMA Junkie, here’s the official lineup for the event, which is scheduled to take place January 1, 2011 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. ...
You read that right, fans and friends. In a bit of breaking news that has just recently hit the internet, several websites are reporting that UFC fighter Chris Leben was arrested Tuesday in Honolulu, Hawaii. Leben was apparently pulled over by the police at 2AM on the morning of October 19 after crashing his car, and was subsequently arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Here are all the details as they’re known so far. ...
As the worlds largest mixed martial art's organization tries to ring in the new year, additional bouts have been added to a stacked card. Next New Year's, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, the UFC will return to Nevada with a lightweight title fight pitting current champion Frankie Edgar, who is riding on a 5-fight win streak (which included two back-to-back victories over former champion BJ Penn) will look to exact revenge when he defends his title against the only man to defeat him, undefeated UFC lightweight title challenger Gray Maynard. Also in action, former Interim heavyweight champion Shane Carwin is coming back to action after succumbing to his first defeat as a professional at UFC 116 when he tangles with the former IFL heavyweight champion and season 10 winner of "The Ultimate Fighter", Roy Nelson. ...
After the news that Anderson Silva is expected to meet Vitor Belfort, not Chael Sonnen, in his next title defense at ufc 125 in January, it looks like the whole card is beginning to come together. Belfort, who was originally set to meet fellow contender Yushin Okami at UFC 122 in November in Germany, has been pulled from the bout in light of what has happened to Sonnen and his failed post-fight drug test from UFC 117 in August, and will now meet the fellow Brazilian. Another interesting middleweight bout has been added to the card, and will be a sure crowd pleaser for all in attendance. ...
UFC veteran Goran Reljic, made waves in the UFC in 2008 when he defeated then light heavyweight contender Wilson Gouveia, with second strikes. With an opening like that, which earned both him and Gouveia "Fight of the Night" honors, the sky appeared to be the limit for the Croatian sensation, who has trained alongside legend Mirko "Cro Cop". However, a 2-year lapse would follow where Goran had suffered from a serious back injury, putting him out of commission, and out of the minds and ears of the fans and media alike. ...
While Gomi may have picked up his biggest win in recent memory, he also picked up the biggest pay-day of the "ufc Live on Versus 2" card, held on August 1, last Sunday, in San Diego, Cali. ...
The UFC returned to the stomping grounds of the Versus network, with their second edition of "UFC Live on Versus 2", which was again anchored by light heavyweight phenom Jon Jones, against crafty veteran Vladimir Matyushenko. Though Jones was the coveted star of the evening with his impressive finish, many others were equally--if not more--impressive, on Sunday evening. ...
UFC 109 takes place February 6 in Las Vegas and is headlined by two legends in the sport on mixed martial arts (MMA). Fighters.com tenth-ranked heavyweight "The Natural" Randy Couture (17-10) faces off against "The Hammer" Mark Coleman (16-9) in the light heavyweight division. There are a couple of fights on this card that I find very intriguing and are likely to not find their way onto the pay per view. ...
Light heavyweights “All American” Brian Stann (7-2) and “Sho Nuff The Master” Rodney Wallace (9-0) will matchup at SpikeTV's The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale in Las Vegas December 5, the UFC confirmed Tuesday. ...
Light heavyweight “Sho Nuff The Master” Rodney Wallace (9-0) will make his UFC debut versus “All American” Brian Stann (7-2) at The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale in Las Vegas December 5, according to a Five Ounces of Pain report. ...
Former WEC light heavyweight champs "Robot" Steve Cantwell (7-2) and "All American" Brian Stann (6-2) will make it a trilogy at UFC Fight Night 19. The holdovers from the WEC's downsizing split a pair in Zuffa's little show, Stann TKOing Cantwell at WEC 26 in Alabama in March 2007 and most recently Cantwell equaling the result at WEC 35 in Las Vegas in August 2008. Cantwell is 1-1 in the Octagon, most recently dropping a UD to "Banha" Luiz Arthur Cane (8-1) at UFC 97 in Montreal 18 April. Stann is 0-1 in the Octagon, suffering a consecutive TKO to "The Experiment" Krzystof Soszynski (19-8-1) at the same event. ...

The remaining bouts are: Luigi Fioravanti (13-4) v Brodie Farber (13-4) Dale Hartt (5-1) v Corey Hill (2-1) “Berserk” Ben Saunders (6-0-2) v Brandon Wolff (7-2) Timothy Credeur (10-2) v Nate Loughran (9-0) “Hater Hurter” Johnny Rees (10-1) v Steve Bruno (11-4) Justin McCully (8-4-2) v Eddie Sanchez (8-2) Five fighters on the card have served in the military. Fioravanti was a Marine, Hartt, Credeur, and Bruno served in the Navy, and Wolff was a Navy SEAL. Missing from the card is a previously announced match between former WEC Light Heavyweight Champion “All American” Brian Stann (6-1) and current champ Steve Cantwell (6-1). Stann, a former Marine, has reportedly sustained a foot injury in training and was forced to withdraw from the event. ...
