Hello once more fans and friends and welcome to another new edition of “Best of the Rest”! I really enjoy taking the time to give my detailed thoughts on a show after watching it, but after the serious discussion and debate I’ll raise in topics like “Top 5 Best Moments” and “Best Performance of the Night”, I think it’d be nice to have a tongue-in-cheek topic where I give out some other “awards”. It’s all in good fun, so don’t take any of it too seriously. So let’s dive right into this latest edition, now featuring Fight Night 24. ...
UFC Fight Night 24: “Nogueira vs. Davis” wasn’t a perfect event by any stretch of the imagination, but it did feature several very entertaining finishes. Although some fights were hit-and-miss, others were very enjoyable to watch. But which stars shined brightest, and what moments will fans be talking about in the following weeks? Here’s my take on the matter: my top 5 best moments of Fight Night 24: “Nogueira vs. Davis”. ...
UFC Fight Night 24 had its fair share of ups and downs, but overall I considered it a solid “Fight Night” event. Now once again it’s time to ask: what’s next? What does the future hold after “Nogueira vs. Davis”? Here’s my answer to just that: a new edition of my “What’s Next for the Winners and Losers” series of articles, now featuring UFC Fight Night 24: “Nogueira vs. Davis”. ...
Another week, another UFC event. The UFC recently wrapped up its “UFC Fight Night 24” event, featuring five free fights on Facebook and four free fights on Spike TV. Both broadcasts saw several entertaining fights and several breakthrough performances. And in the main event, Phil Davis took home the biggest victory of his career. Here are the full results as well as some commentary for UFC Fight Night 24: “Nogueira vs. Davis”. ...
A lot of anticipation, a lot of expectation's surrounded the rematch pitting Leonard Garcia and Chan Sung Jung earlier tonight. Their first bout was one for the ages, and even UFC commentator Joe Rogan dubbed the bout as "fight of the decade". And often times, rematches never really live up to the hype of the initial meeting, and this bout was no different. While there wasn't a whole lot of wild exchanges, or knockdowns galore as per the Leonard Garcia formula, there was a spectacular finish--the first of it's kind inside the octagon, and we have Eddie Bravo to thank. ...
With so much excitement and anticipation for UFC 128 in the days and weeks leading up to that event, I admit that I’ve somewhat neglected UFC Fight Night 24. However, as we come closer and closer to this event I’ve begun to realize how much I’m going to enjoy this show. So long as the fights live up to their potential, this should be another very solid night of UFC action. And now it’s time for my final say: this is the Fight Night 24 edition of “Finally Final Thoughts”, with my final, assorted thoughts on the card. Let’s get to it. ...
We’re now only a few days away from UFC Fight Night 24: “Nogueira vs. Davis”. In the main event, Phil Davis takes on Antonio Rogerio Nogueira in a bout that puts the winner once step closer to a title shot in a division that’s now blown wide open following the sudden ascension of Jon Jones. The co-main event will also be an interesting match-up, as Dan Hardy looks to break a two-fight losing streak by beating the returning Anthony Johnson, who has spent over a year outside of the Octagon but at one point was touted as one of the rising stars of the division. As is customary, here is my official “picks and predictions” post (covering who I think will win and why), now featuring UFC Fight Night 24. ...
On March 26, 2011, the UFC will hold its highly-anticipated “Fight Night 24” event, featuring a main event that pits top Light Heavyweight fighters “Mr. Wonderful” Phil Davis and “Little Nog” Antonio Rogerio Nogueira against each other. Also, Dan Hardy and Anthony Johnson meet in what should be a thrilling co-main event between two very skilled and very different Welterweight fighters. Still, some fans may be asking themselves: what are the best reasons to check out this card? Here’s my answer to just that: 5 reasons to watch “UFC Fight Night 24: Nogueira vs. Davis”. ...
Hello once more fans and friends and welcome to the latest edition of “Crash Course”. “Crash Course” is a series of articles designed to give readers a quick rundown on all the relevant information they need to know heading into an upcoming major MMA event. Everything from why you should watch, what you should expect in the co-main and main event, and even where and when you can find it on TV is all covered in detail. So let’s get right to it with today’s edition, featuring UFC Fight Night 24: “Nogueira vs. Davis”. ...
It was one of the best fights of the final era of the gone-but-not-forgotten World Extreme Cagefighting promotion. It’s Leonard Garcia vs. The Korean Zombie… and it’s happening again. Many fans and insiders attribute a chunk (the exact size depends on who you ask) of the success of the WEC’s first and only Pay-Per-View to this free preliminary fight, which saw both men battle to a magnificent fifteen-round decision that Garcia somewhat-controversially won. Garcia was set to rematch another fighter who he controversially beat, Nam Phan, but with Phan’s recent removal from the card due to an injury, the stage is set for “Garcia/Zombie 2” at UFC Fight Night 24. Here are all the details. ...
Rounds 4,5, and 6 are now taking shape as "The Ultimate Fighter" veteran Nam Phan will square off again with Leonard Garcia, in what should turn out to be another instant classic in the newly minted featherweight class inside the UFC. The two bangers originally met last December at "The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale", after Nam competed on the show as a lightweight, making it to the semi-finals where he lost a close split-decision to eventual finalist Michael Johnson. The cause for the immediate rematch is due in part to the controversy sorrounding their original encounter, where it appeared that Phan had walked away with an obvious decision win after controlling most of the action throughout the fifteen-minute affair with superior striking skills, hurting Garcia on several occasions, however in the end the Greg Jackson product left the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas with a gifted split-decision win. ...
Today marks the end of what I fully believe will one day be remembered as one of the most important Mixed Martial Arts promotions of all time. Just like the UFC itself broke down barriers with the first season of “The Ultimate Fighter” and live, free events on Spike TV, the WEC broke the weight barrier by putting all the best lighter-weight fighters together and making them fight each other time after time. In the process, the WEC helped proved that weight is only a number, and that exciting finishes and amazing fights can happen regardless of how big or small you are. I know I’ve only been a fan of the WEC for a short time, and believe me, I wish that wasn’t the case. Nevertheless, since all the major sites are bidding farewell to the WEC in their own special way, here’s my top 5 memories from my all-too-brief time as a WEC fan. ...
Another season of the popular UFC reality TV show “The Ultimate Fighter” has come and gone, another live special that traditionally ends the competition is once more in the history books. The UFC recently held its “The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale” event from the Pearl at the Palms in the UFC’s home base of Las Vegas, Nevada, and the traditional post-fight award bonuses as well as the attendance and live gate figures have been released. ...
Twelve seasons of the popular UFC reality TV show “The Ultimate Fighter” have now aired, twelve “Ultimate Finale” live events have come and gone. Last night was the latest “Ultimate Finale” event, and it certainly caused its fair share of controversy. In the main event, Jonathan Brookins defeated Michael Johnson to become the TUF 12 champion. But what does his future hold, and for that matter, the futures of all the men who competed at “The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale”? Here are my thoughts. ...
The live finale event to the twelfth season of the popular UFC reality TV show “The Ultimate Fighter” is now a thing of the past. A new champion has been crowned, and several stars looked great in their main-card attractions. Stephan Bonner surprised most of the viewing public by using his grappling and wrestling to outmaneuver and ultimately outpoint Igor Pokrajac, while Jonathan Brookins survived some big punches courtesy of Michael Johnson throughout their three-round war of attrition to ultimately emerge as the TUF 12 champion. Here are the full results to “The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale”. ...
Heading into tomorrow's night of fights, which will be challenged by Strikeforce who will hold a show in St. Louis simultaneously with the UFC, all fighters weighed in for "The Ultimate Fighter" season twelve finale show. All but one fighter, WEC veteran Nick Pace, were successful in making weight on their first attempts. Pace was eventually deducted twenty-percent of his purse when he was unable to lose the additional 3 pounds which was required to reach the 136-pound limit of the bantamweight division. ...
Hello once more fans and friends and welcome to another edition of “Picks and Predictions”, where I pull out my crystal ball and unleash my inner Nostradamus on an upcoming high-profile MMA card. This latest edition officially ends my special “TUF 12 Bonanza” series of articles. Today’s event is the twelfth edition of the “Ultimate Finale” series of events that’s used to definitively end a season of “The Ultimate Fighter” with a great, live night of fights that sees a TUF Champion crowned. So let’s get right to it. ...
It’s become somewhat of a tradition to have a series of eleventh-hour fight announcements for an upcoming “Ultimate Finale” event that features some of the fighters from the latest season of the popular ufc reality TV show “The Ultimate Fighter”. In that vein, the UFC has recently announced a pair of fights for their upcoming “The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale” event. According to one source, one of the bouts will even make the main card and feature a certain former WEC championship contender. Here are all the details. ...
As the ufc heads towards its last few shows for the remaining 2010 calendar year, several recent stories have emerged. Former UFC Lightweight turned WEC Featherweight Leonard Garcia, who once challenged for the WEC Featherweight Championship, has been removed from his upcoming bout at “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 12 Finale event. In addition, it was recently confirmed that Nick Osipczak has been released from his contract. Here are all the details. ...
While it’s flown under most people’s radars, the UFC and Strikeforce will once again be going head-to-head in the war for the MMA viewing audience. On December 4, Strikeforce will hold its “Henderson vs. Babalu” event the same day that the UFC will hold its “The Ultimate Fighter 12 Finale” show. There’s going to be a lot of good MMA happening on December 4, and rather than forcing fans to pick one show or the other, here’s my list of the top 5 fights from both shows, the ones you should watch no matter what organization you swear allegiance to. ...
It’s inevitable that a hot prospect will one day fall from grace. 2010 in particular has proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that no MMA star is unbeatable no matter what their past record is or how highly they are touted. Chan Sung Jung, the man known as “The Korean Zombie” due to his uncanny ability to absorb damage and somehow keep moving forward, is simply another of 2010’s many examples. After competing in a sure-fire “Fight of the Year” candidate against Leonard Garcia in his WEC debut, Jung was on the wrong end of a brilliant head-kick KO courtesy of George Roop. And according to the man himself, that KO signaled the death of The Korean Zombie as we know him. Here are all the details. ...
When UFC President Dana White announced earlier this week that the WEC has officially merged with it's sister promotion, rumors ran rampant as far as when we would be able to see first some of the WEC's finest in action. The big boss suggested that Jose Aldo defending his featherweight title against recently announced number one contender Josh Grispi at UFC 125 in January would be the first sign where we would be able to see WEC stars in action, and no sooner. Well Dana, you were wrong, and I'm dam happy about it. ...
As the year is coming closer to an end, the now annual World MMA Awards, which is hosted by Fighters Only Magazine, has recently announced their finalists for the December 1st event, which will take place once again in Las Vegas, Nev., which has become a hot bed for all things fighting related. The 2009 event opened up to a large audience, and has become a propellant in the mixed martial arts world, opening up the eyes to a mainstream audience, by the community taking leaps and bounds in order to legitimize itself as not only a legitimate sport, but one that deserves that same sort of recognition that most others receive, here in these United States. ...
WEC 51 “Aldo vs. Gamburyan” was one for the history books, and now that it’s actually in the history books, I’m left looking towards the future once again. Like all of my previous installments in the “What’s Next” series, I’ll be giving my thoughts on what the future will hold for some of the big winners and losers of “Aldo vs. Gamburyan”. So let’s get right to it. ...
It's now come and gone, and WEC 51 reads like some crazy, bizarre storybook now that it's all over. A Korean Zombie was defeated, an Angel was reborn, a Mongolian Wolf chewed up the competition, a historic rivalry had its next (and almost certainly not last) chapter written in the blood of a great fighter, and in the main event of the night, the WEC Featherweight Champion once again proved that he is without equal. Here are all the results as well as my thoughts on the unsurprisingly fantastic WEC 51: “Aldo vs. Gamburyan” event. ...
Today marks the fifty-first show held by the World Extreme Cagefighting promotion. The card is so stacked that it was once rumored to be the next WEC Pay-Per-View, and it features big-name stars like Jose Aldo, Manvel Gamburyan, Mike Thomas Brown, Leonard Garcia, Miguel Torres, Donald Cerrone, and Jamie Varner. I’ve tried to be as vocal of a supporter of the WEC as I can possibly be in my time with fighters.com, so I can’t wait to see this show. Here are my predictions on all the big matches scheduled for WEC 51: “Aldo vs. Gamburyan”. ...
As wec 51 looms our way tomorrow night, all competitors at the 1st Bank Arena in Broomsfield, Colorado made it to the scale, with no controversy. The main event of the evening, a featherweight match up against two of the best in the class, will feature Jose Aldo putting his belt on the line against season five finalist of "The Ultimate Fighter" Manny Gamburyan, and taking on co-headlining duties will be a grudge match for the ages when former WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner steps back into the cage for the second time this year when he faces nemesis and crowd favorite Donald "Cowboy" Cerrone, who is coming off of a loss to current champion Ben Henderson in an attempt to vie for the title. ...
While the WEC is recognized as being under the Zuffa umbrella that also is associated with the UFC, which is unarguably the worlds largest leading promotion in the world of mixed martial arts--the WEC does not remain as the red headed stepchild of the group. The "little" big promotion has made many strides in the last few years, improving their fundamentals and becoming a leading competitor to any organization that embodies the lighter weight classes. Currently, of the WEC's bantamweight and featherweight classes, most if not all of the top-10 competitors exist within the promotion. And while the WEC has consistently put together solid shows, time after time--WEC 51 will be no exception. In fact, it may be on their better cards to date. ...
Featuring one of the most stacked cards of the year, WEC 51: “Aldo vs. Gamburyan” is going to be a real treat for WEC fans. It may not have the star power of WEC’s first Pay-Per-View event, WEC 48: “Aldo vs. Faber”, but it comes very close. So here are my five top reasons why anybody and everybody should be excited for WEC 51. ...
Former UFC lightweight title challenger Diego Sanchez is making changes. After his losses to former champion BJ Penn at lightweight, and then budding welterweight star John Hathaway, Diego will try his hand once again at the 170-pound division at UFC 121 against Paulo Thiago. Sanchez largely made his name after winnings "The Ultimate Fighter" season one as a middleweight, before dropping down to the welterweight division in dominating fashion. After defeating fellow finalist Kenny Florian at the TUF finale, Diego would make a name for himself in victories over Karo Parisyan, Nick Diaz, and Joe Riggs. While Diego can attribute a large amount of his success to his hard work and dedication, but in some respects a little of that success also needs to be addressed to the man, the myth, the legend--Greg Jackson. ...
