The bubbly is iced, the tuxedos are pressed, and New Year’s Eve is but a day away! However, before ringing in 2012 there were fireworks of a different variety in the form of UFC 141: Lesnar vs. Overeem.
The card was headlined by humungous heavyweights Brock Lesnar and Alistair Overeem in a classic battle between two masters of widely different styles. Joining the giants on the marquee are 155ers Donald Cerrone-Nate Diaz, two ferocious, fearless competitors who would fight backstage sans gloves if the NSAC would sanction it.
Lesnar-Overeem was short and somewhat unspectacular as Lesnar was never able to get a takedown, nor did he make much of an effort for one, and ended up getting dropped by a body shot. Overeem sprang on tap shortly thereafter and finished things off. After the fight Lesnar decided to hang his oversized gloves up after promising his family he would only fight one more time at most.
In the co-headliner, Diaz and Cerrone wowed for fifteen minutes with the son of Stockton getting the better of “Cowboy” in the striking department and picking him apart to come away with the decision victory.
Other notable match-ups included Jon Fitch vs. Johny Hendricks, where Hendricks picked up a twelve-second knockout, and Vladimir Matyushenko vs. Alexander Gustafsson which saw the young Swede come away with with a quick and impressive TKO win.
