Going into last night’s headlining bout between heavyweights Junior dos Santos and Cain Velasquez at UFC 155 it seemed a stoppage was likely in store for fans, as both men have a history of finishing foes and their original encounter in 2011 resulted in a 64-second knockout. However, though Velasquez had Dos Santos on the ropes early on, he never put “Cigano” away and ultimately took home a dominant decision win.
It turns out UFC President Dana White was as surprised as anyone else in terms of the championship clash going the distance, especially since he felt as though Velasquez could have ended Dos Santos’ evening at a number of points had he been so inclined.
“I would have bet everything I own that this fight would never go five rounds and I’d be broke right now. Good thing I didn’t bet.”
“I think that Cain Velasquez could have stopped it in the second round. He could have let his hands go in any of those flurries, anywhere from the second to the fifth, and the ref probably would have jumped in. But Cain was fighting the safe fight, he wanted that belt, and it was a great fight.”
