Chael Sonnen, Kenny Florian Say Wrestling Key To UFC 168 Main Event

“UFC Tonight” hosts Chael Sonnen and Kenny Florian recently offered up their insight into next Saturday’s UFC 168 main event fight between UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman and Anderson Silva.

Sonnen, of course, has trained long and hard for Silva, fighting him twice.

“Anderson is the favorite in this fight,” Sonnen said. “You could say in the last one he got caught. What people miss (is) he was getting dominated before the knockout in the last one.

“Anderson has a big gap to close.”

Weidman planted “The Spider” in the second round back in July, stunning the MMA world and becoming the first fighter to defeat Silva inside the Octagon.

As for what the Brazilian needs to do differently this time, Florian brought it back to the basics.

“Anderson needs to go back to what he knows,” he said. “He’s got to be on his wrestling game and to keep the range. Leg kicks from the outside will help. If he does get taken down, he’s got to work from the bottom or get back to his feet.

“And he can’t be cocky.”

Many felt Silva wasn’t taking Weidman seriously during the first encounter, pretending to fall down and showboating through the first five minutes.

Sonnen also agreed with Florian on the wrestling aspects in regards to Weidman successfully defending his belt.

“It’s the takedowns,” he said. “He was a college All-American in wrestling. He’s got to move forward (and) he can’t back up. He’s got to land the takedown and have ground control.

“He’s got to look for a submission, but watch out for Silva’s submission attempts.”

On the same episode, Ronda Rousey was a guest and offered up her pick for the fight.

“I have to go with Anderson just because he’s the hero I’ve looked up to for so many years,” said the UFC female bantamweight champion, who defends her title in the night’s co-main event vs. Miesha Tate.
