The main event was scheduled to be the coaches of the Ultimate Fighter 16, but in the end was Roy Nelson and Matt Mitrione who headlined the Ultimate Fighter 16 Finale in Las Vegas after Mitrione stepped in on two weeks notice to fill in for Shane Carwin. “Meathead” came in and stood toe-to-toe with Nelson but came up on the wrong end of a knockout midway through the first round.
Mitrione was coming forward early in the short fight and throwing head kicks at Nelson, and although “Big Country” was blocking them, it was evident the strikes were hurting the arms of Nelson when he was blocking them. After a short grappling exchange on the fence, the two separated and began exchanging punches. That’s when things went wrong for Mitrione.
Nelson caught Mitrione with a slick three-punch combination that ended with an uppercut that crumpled Mitrione to the cage floor. Nelson then landed a few strikes and the ref jumped in to rescue Mitrione at 2:58 in Round 1.
The win moved Nelson to 18-7 and dropped Mitrione down to 5-2.
