The UFC’s Super Bowl Weekend event grew today with the addition of a battle between highly-touted bantamweights Scott Jorgensen and Renan Barao. Both 135ers have the momentum of winning streaks at their back and the bout is certain to have major implications on the division’s contendership picture in 2012, possibly even earning the winner a shot at the belt.
News of the match-up was confirmed by the UFC. Also mentioned, Mike Pierce will replaces Carlos Condit against Josh Koscheck now that “The Natural Born Killer” has been bumped up to the headlining spot due to Georges St. Pierre’s recent knee injury.
Jorgensen was a longtime staple in WEC before transitioning to the Octagon and has gone 2-0 since. He holds an overall record of 13-4 with past wins over Brad Pickett, Takeya Mizugaki, and most recently Jeff Curran.
Though Jorgensen has won his last two fights, the sensational Barao has emerged with his hands raised in an incredible twenty-six straight contests and battered Pickett into submission, literally, last month in their bout at UFC 138.
