UFC's Matt Hamill Suffered Dislocated Shoulder in Controversial TUF 10 Finale W Over Jon Jones

Posted On: December 7, 2009 at 9:29am

The Ultimate Fighter 3’s “Hammer” Matt Hamill (8-2) was diagnosed with a dislocated shoulder at a Las Vegas-area hospital after winning a matchup versus “Bones” Jon Jones (9-1) when Jones was disqualified for an illegal elbow strike at SpikeTV’s The Ultimate Fighter 10 Finale in Las Vegas Saturday, according to an MMA Junkie report.

The shoulder was popped back into its socket at the hospital and Hamill will have an MRI to assess any soft tissue damage.

Hamill’s shoulder was dislocated during a Jones throw to the mat which began a mounted assault of punches and elbows to Hamill’s head ending in the illegal elbow thrown “12-6″.

The stoppage by referee Steve Mazzagatti and decision to award Hamill the “W” after reviewing the instant replay is controversial.  Mazzagatti allowed Hamill to survive through a long, viscious attack from Jones while Hamill’s only defense was shielding his face.  The assault was only stopped after Jones through the illegal elbow and Hamill indicated he was unable to continue due to the shoulder injury.

Jones assumed he had won the fight and celebrated with his corner; but, Mazzagatti requested an instant replay review to determine whether the illegal strike lead to Hamill’s inability to continue fighting.  The determination at cageside was that it did; and, Jones was disqualified, giving Hamill the victory.

Jones apologized for the illegal blow after the fight.

Wow…First he takes a point away after he was slow on stopping the fight. Jon Jones kicked his ASS, out smarted him, and man handled Hamill. GREAT FIGHT till the elbow. I really think Hamill took him for granted. I Pray that he is OK.

I’d watched the entire heavyweight TUF. I turned to another channel after the Hamill debacle, never went back, didn’t watch the finale. Jones appealed to the ref 2 or 3 times to stop the beatdown. UFC dances on the edge and the UFC juggernaut went overboard in this one–as is likely when you continually walk a fence. What was done to Hamill would result in a trip to a jail cell had it been done to a dog or cat or any other animal outside the octagon. I’ve had enough. It’s time to move on to a more positive use of my time.

Tony B and Clayton F- I agree with both your comments. I will add that these elbows while Hamill was down illustrate the danger of ground-and-pound, not just the illegal elbowos, but also non-illegal strikes. The reason is because, unlike when you are standing, your head has no where to move when struck if laying down. Instead of bobbling around as your neck sways, your head is pressed on the floor, so the impact of the blow is absorbed by your skull. It is only a matter of time before we see a terrible skull fracture, and maybe coma and death. They need a rule change- no strikes to the head unless both are standing. I know…takes away an aspect of the game. But how many dead brain cells must these underpaid, brave athletes endure? Isn’t it enough that Hamill is deaf? He has a long life ahead of him after his fighting career- and not hearing is enough disadvantage. A damaged brain is additional disadvantage. Time for better rules.

haha u guys are funny. Ground and pound is an Essential part of the sport. standing up and taking a blow to the head is just as dangerous as taking it on the ground. standing your neck gets messed up and its Easier to get knocked out. The fight should have been stopped, but it wastn. get over it and if u dont like fighting or dont understand it then dont form an oppinion.. instead stick to whatever u do like and appreciate, and make your own judgments on that. GET OUT OF MY SPORT

and matt hammil would kick your ass body punched.. so is he really at a disadvantage? if so to who?

Juan – if you don’t believe me, try this experiment at home: first have your friend punch you while you are standing; second, have him punch you just as hard while your head is pressed against the floor. There- don’t listen to me, just see for yourself. And why do you think Matt Hamill is not at a disadvantage because he can kick my ass? After his fighting career is over he is at a disadvantage. I earn several hundered thousand dollars per year, and my career will not end when I am past fighting age- and I have a solid retirement. Matt will need to find a job that requires his brain, so he needs to preserve his brain cells. Apparently you did not preserve your.

I think Matt would do better next time.It was an unfortunate incident that he landed weird on his shoulder. Not taking anything away from Bones, hes a bad dude.I think Hamill was doing just fine till he got his shoulder seperated.I hope there is a rematch so we all can see a good fight.Matt would dominate him on the ground and maybey even win in standup in some rounds.

I like jon jones but he is being a complete bitch about this. Would he have won…probably, but it’s his fault for throwing illegal blows. He has fought in the ufc enough times to know the rules and now he has the nerve to appeal the decision made by the referee. Maybe he got caught up the in the moment but they make rules for a reason and when you break them, you lose…sorry. Maybe he should’ve received a warning from the ref to stop but again, he should know better. I say give them a rematch.

Lol. Don’t think this is the fight to judge ground and pound danger with. Guy with dislocated shoulder trying to protect himself in mount is about as bad of a situation as you get. Strikes from the ground generally do less damage than ones standing up. Check out Wanderlei Silva knock out Rampage the second time. In conclusion anyone with a win over Seth “Kimbo Killer” Petruzelli does not qualify for disability.
