Maiquel Falcao says Gerald Harris tapped out three-times at UFC 123

If you wanted to make a good impression in a UFC debut, don’t do what Maiquel Falcao did last Saturday.
The middleweight prospect did little to boast his impressive career when he engaged in a third-round staring contest with fellow 185-pounder Gerald Harris.
For the lack luster affair, Harris was released from the promotion holding a 3-1 record inside the octagon, with the lone loss coming to Falcao by way of unanimous decision. Falcao received equal criticism, though will remain in the promotion for the time being. Having walked away with the decision win, it appeared early on that Maiquel would take home a submission victory in the opening round when he secured a rear-naked choke on Harris. And according to the Brazilian, the submission should have been his.
“He tapped out in three different occasions, hiding it”, said the Chute Boxe product while speaking with TATAME.com, following
“It was a new thing for me, it was the first time I got three wins on the same bout. On the first round, he tapped out the first time when he was on the four points position, then he tapped out again in the end of the first round, when I got him on the rear naked choke with his body turned up, and on the third round he tapped out again on a rear naked choke.”
According to Maiquel, he seems to be more impressed with his debut then anyone else, since in his mind, he’s earned a three-fight win streak in a single-night of action. Pretty impressive.
A true prospect nonetheless, coupled with his Wanderlei Silva like striking and an adept grappling game, Falcao will remain a quiet force to be reckoned with inside the octagon.
So, MMA peeps, how would you asses Maiquel’s performance last Saturday? Can he atone for his actions with an dazzling performance in his next bout? Sound off in the comment section below.

Maiquel Falcao should have been cut, that third round was insulting. Not to mention holding the choke past when the ref tried to pull him off. I understand the round ended early, but only a real douchebag holds a choke past when the ref tries to pull them off. I also blame Harris for not pressing the action, but I can’t honestly blame a man for not fighting when he got worked for the first two rounds, at least he was the one throwing the punches.
People who think Falcao held the choke too long dont’ know what they’re talking about. Take a look again. They ran the buzzer about 7 seconds too early, to save Harris. Watch again, round 1. The buzzer ends the round 6 or 7 seconds too early. Of course Falcao didn’t let go, since he knew he was bein cheated. UFC probably had to release Harris because they didn’t want any accusations of impropriety, they will probably bring him back again later on.
Seriously – Maiquel Falcao showed patience and skill. He thought he had the fight won in the 1st round and it is not his fault the timing of the round was incorrect. I would like to see him fight Rich Franklin. I can see a win and the UFC will have a new superstar. If Harris wanted the win in the 3rd round he should have gone balls to the wall and attack Falcao. Mark my words this gut was some calm and cunning the fans forgot that he had basically choked out and knocked out Harris. In fact, there is an argument that Harris tapped in round 2 as well if you watch carefully.
I respect the guys that go out and just fight recklessly, however Falcao knows this game and how to play. Harris is no joke and Falcao made short work of him from a technical point of view. It was like watching amateur night as Harris tried to do anything (keep in mind he slammed his last opponent out cold) and was seemingly scared to attack Falcao.
Just listen to the commentary during the 1st 2 rounds and Joe Rogan had nothing but great things to say. For some reason in the fight game we have short memories; in round three Rogan seemed to have amnesia to the apparent submissions and strikes Falcao landed in round 1 & 2.
Bottom line is not all fighters come running out like a Brock Lesnar going for broke. Bet Lesnar wishes he was a bit more careful and paced his attack against Velasquez in U.F.C. 121. Hell, fight of the night was Lauzon vs. George Sot… and Lauzon blew his load as well. Lauzon is a favorite of mine, but he approached this last fight all wrong .or (he needs to put on some muscle and fight @ 171).
Ultimately I digress…. Falcao is a wrecking machine. Just wait for any to attack him the way Harris did. Oh, that’s right Harris learned that lesson in the 1st 2 rounds.

Maiquel maybe right about the tapping, the way I understand is this fight is turning out to be contraversial yet very intriguing because of facts that are popping up. The first round ends 7 seconds early, that too when harris was in the likelihood of going to sleep, eventhough its the first time we seem to notice the clock mishap Dana makes a blunder by saying it happens frequently, then striker-turned lay-and-pray guy wins and Harris 3-1 in the UFC (17-3 overall) is given the boot. Its all very confusing. I don’t mean to take anything away from Maiquel, who deserves won and he won very clearly. Its just that I don’t fully understand why Harris was released from the UFC, he only lost one fight, and if he tapped out on three separate instances its the referee’s job to end the fight (for a win by submission). Unless it was for unsportmanlike behaviour (Paul Dailey) or running away (Kaleb Starnes) it doesn’t seem right to kick out someone for just losing one fight in the UFC.
BS. You release a choke when the ref tells you, not when you ‘think the round should end’. It’s not a joke, you’re in a position where you could seriously injure someone. MF looks like a good fighter, but he should know better. Ask Renato Sobral about holding a choke too long.
I agree – Harris should not have been cut. Cut Cro Cop before you cut Harris. Sheesh.
Hes good real good! hes from the chute boxing academy
he has outstanding talent and skill and will be a champ in the future
i like harris but he did tap 3 times during that fight hate to say it but he was out classed
I agree with MMAnalyst. I have two specific complaints with Falcao.
a) he complains about 7 seconds (real or not) in spite of spending 3 or more minutes per every 5 minute round doing absolutely nothing but backing off. If he cared about 7 seconds he shouldn’t have wasted between 180 and 300 seconds per 300 second round.
b) if the ref didn’t see the tap out, it wasn’t a tap out. And how exactly can someone “hide” a tap out? They’re tapping out meaning they’re asking for the fight to stop or they’re not.
Falcao may have technical skill; and Falcao may have patience; but he’s missing sportsmanship. I’ve seen sore losers, but he’s a sore winner.
When push comes to shove; Harris is a lucky man that the round ended early and the referee did not see the multiple taps…
I have not missed one UFC event in a long time (6 yrs) ;the Ref’s miss a bunch of angles (i.e. grabbing shorts, fences and illegal strikes). Ref’s can’t always see all angles and Harris was fortunate that was the case.
If the 1st round had the extra seconds; Harris (a talented fighter) would have be out cold for at least 5 seconds. Keep in mind that this was Falcao’s 1st fight in the U.F.C. and that is a tough bill to fill with a bad Ref. and poor timing on the clock.
Harris was outclassed and outwitted and submitted! Look at the tape and tell me Falcao did not patiently, methodically and surgically dominate Harris. Why press your opponent when they are afraid to attack you after 2 rounds of domination………
My Prediction: Win = Falcao = Future Champ = Rich Franklin match = Win vs. Silva.. = `185 lb. Champion

i think i saw harris tap falcao’s arm on the first rnc. that’s was very deep and locked pretty good. submission victory. damn, can’t wait to see this man fight with a good stand up game, like marquardt or franklin…..
Harris should be cut and it’s good that he was. It’s takes guts to be in that ring and it takes guts to go for broke when you’ve been dominated, guts Harris doesn’t have. After the the end of Round 1 the ref and Harris’s corner tells him it’s NOT over go to your corner……? Since when does the ref tell you to go on with a fight it’s your choice! But after that Harris was broken he didn’t know what to do he knew he submitted and he just kinda went on half assed it the rest of the why. Falcao looks bad ass!!! Harris is a good fighter gutless but good and Falcoa dominated him. It’s not Falcao’s fault for the 3de round he was winning easy…Why would he go and put that on the line by storming in? He was waiting for Harris to come after him and make a mistake, but Harris had zero will to do that he just wanted to survive. The last 10 seconds you see Falcao calling out Harris but he just stood there doing nothing……Falcao goes after him but Harris just covers his head
After the fight Falcao tries to thank Harris and Harris just pushes he arm away as he leaves and you wana tell me Falcao is unsporting?
