Last Friday, the former WEC featherweight champion was on his way to the United States from his native Brazil in order to pick up his most prized possession.
After a crushing run through the 145-pound division in the soon-to-be defunct World Extreme Cagefighting organization, the sister promotion of the UFC which are both under the same umbrella of the Zuffa corporation, which held host to Jose going 8-0 inside the octagon with 7 of those victories coming by way of knockout, Aldo will now transition into the UFC.
A rough child hood eventually attracted him to the world of mixed martial arts where he has failed to disappoint yet.
Aldo eventually made his way to find the famed Nova Uniao school in Brazil which has played host to a bevvy of the sports best fighters, including BJ Penn, Marlon Sandro, Thales Leites, but perhaps Aldo had been the best kept secret at the academy before transitioning here in the States.
Wins over former champions Alexandre Nogueira, Mike Brown, and Urijah Faber anchor his career highlights. His last victory came inside the cage against the season five finalist of “The Ultimate Fighter” in Manny Gamburyan. Aldo successfully defended his then WEC title for a second time when he knocked out Manvel early in the second round.
Jose, 24, was given a special ceremony proceeding Saturday’s pay-per-view event where he was officially awarded his UFC title, and now is now officially considered to be the organization’s featherweight champion.
He will look to make his first successful title defense inside the UFC against top contender Josh Grispi at UFC 125: Resolution, which takes place on Jan. 1 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. Both men will serve as the co-main event of the evening.
