Last Friday night, undefeated featherweight Ronda Rousey went on the microphone after her successful showing against Julia Budd at Strikeforce Challengers 20 and expressed her interest in dropping to 135 pounds to face Miesha Tate or Sarah Kaufman. Now it appears Rousey is not the only popular female fighter on the Strikeforce roster who may be making the move to bantamweight at some point in the near future.
During a recent interview, 145-pound champion Cristiane Santos (10-1) mentioned she has been approached by Strikeforce officials about the possibility of slimming down, saying the organization is looking to streamline things to provide more relevant match-ups for their high-caliber females.
“It’s already hard for me to drop to 145lbs, I gotta work a lot and they’re thinking about one division only, they asked me if I could do it. I can try, it’s not impossible. Let’s see… I guess that, in the future, there’ll be some news,” said the 26-year old in an interview with Tatame.
It’ll be hard because I got a lot of weight to lose, but it’d be good because I could fight more,” she continued. “I guess it’s important to keep active – it’s my job, so I’ll try it to stay here.”
Before attempting to dip her toes in the bantamweight pool Santos will be busy defending her belt on December 17 against Japanese grappler Hiroko Yamanaka (12-1).
