Renan Barao-Michael McDonald on tap for 2013

With a successful showing from UFC welterweight Georges St-Pierre this past weekend, fans of injured bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz gained some hope the 135-pound star will eventually come back as strong from his torn ACL as GSP did from his. Unfortunately, there’s still no timetable on Cruz’s return to the ring other than it coming at some point in 2013.

With Cruz still out of the picture for an undetermined amount of time, it appears interim title-holder Renan Barao will see action again before attempting to unify the belt with Cruz’s linear strap, as UFC President Dana White has revealed the 29-1 Brazilian will likely fight in the coming months.

“Whether he wants to wait or not, we’re going to go back to him probably soon here and have him defend it,” said White at the UFC 154 post-event press conference, confirming Michael McDonald as the most probable opponent.

McDonald, only 21 years old, is 15-1 thus far in his career including four wins under the UFC banner. He was last seen stopping Miguel Torres with strikes in April.
