In the run up to his UFC 154 welterweight championship defense, George St-Pierre talked about why he didn’t like womens mixed martial arts. In a frank comment, GSP explained how he didn’t like to see women get hurt, and admitted it was probably because of the way he was brought up. Those comments aren’t sitting too well with former strikeforce bantamweight champion Miesha Tate.
In a blog post on her website, Tate wrote:
I think the problem with GSP’s view about WMMA is that he doesn’t have one. If he hasn’t ever watched us women fight then he can’t say how he really feels about it because he’s ignorant…. If everyone felt about MMA as GSP thinks he feels about WMMA, then he wouldn’t have a job.

Sexist attitudes are not alright, and just like any other role model, GSP shouldn’t be enforcing harmful attitudes, racist or sexist or any other. Good for Miesha for calling him on it, and good for Ronda for backing her up.

Are you people seriously bashing Miesha here? she’s absolutely right. He makes a preconceived notion about WMMA based on his own personal sexist beliefs on what roles genders play in society. If women want to fight it’s not up to a man to say no, just like it’s not up to a man to deny their choice on reproductive rights.
