Roy Nelson Squeaks By Justin Wren on SpikeTV's The Ultimate Fighter 10

Posted On: November 11, 2009 at 11:47pm

Heavyweight “Big Country” Roy Nelson (13-4) won a two-round majority decision over Justin Wren (8-1) by judges’ scores of 20-18 twice and 19-19 once in an exhibition quarter-final fight on The Ultimate Fighter 10 Wednesday.

Fighters.com scored the fight a draw at 19-19; and, Fighters.com’s fourth-ranked light heavyweight “Sugar” Rashad Evans (13-1-1), who coached both fighters to the quarters, said, “This is a fight that should’ve went to the third round.  This is a third round fight.”

In the first round, Wren exploded forward in flurries, consistently tagging Nelson with near-haymaker right hooks.  Nelson clinched with double-underhooks and landed knees as Wren squeezed Nelson in a bodylock.  The referee broke the fighters’ clinch.  Wren continued placing his right hook on Nelson’s head while Nelson caught Wren with a couple jabs as Wren came forward.

At the end of the round, UFC President Dana White’s opinion was clear, “Justin Wren comes out and absolutely destroys Roy Nelson.”

Fighters.com scored the round 10-9 in favor of Wren.

In the second round, Wren mixed in a leg kick to cap-off his flurries, but his punches were a little wilder, his flurries a bit more infrequent.

Evans commented, “Wren is really, really tired, hands on the hips, throwing punches that just hit nothing but air.”

Nelson took advantage of Wren’s waning stamina, nailing Wren with a jab as he lumbered forward and countering with his on leg kick.  Wren applied a Thai clinch, but Nelson shoved two uppercuts into Wren’s mug and pushed Wren off.  As Wren stuck out another leg kick, Nelson countered with a stiff straight punch.

At the end of the round, now-retired sixth-ranked “Rampage” Quinton Jackson (28-7) chanted, “One more round!”

And, due to TUF rules which mandate a deciding third round in the event of a draw at the end of two rounds, Fighters.com expected a third round too, scoring the second round 10-9 for Nelson.

But, the judges scored the fight a majority decision for Nelson, who predicted, “If it went three, I would’ve probably won with a KO or TKO.”

White was less certain.  He said, “Uh, yeah, you got the shit beat out of you for the first round.  The day we see Roy Nelson in an exciting fight that he made exciting, I’ll give him his props.”

Nelson advances into the semi-finals.

Roy Nelson easily beat Justin Wren. Anybody who disagrees probably thinks Kimbo can fight.

Shiv, that’s just silly to say, Roy got a beating in round one and won round two, no reason this shouldn’t have gone to round 3.

Nahvis, I really do not think it was an overwhelming first round in Justin Wren’s favor. Sure Justin came out throwing a lot of punches in the beginning and he got some in but not all of them were connecting. All the while Roy was able to counter with some clean single shots. The rest of the round was all Roy. He was able to stay out of harms way, paced himself and fought a smart fight.

The second round Roy pretty much had Justin figured out. Justin’s game pretty much fell apart. He threw wild missing punches, started dropping his hands and was obviously gassed.

But let’s say for arguments sake that there had been a third round. Justin was so gassed I doubt he would have stood much of a chance to even finish it.

Shiv, justin was the aggressor, he had ring control, he was throwing blows, fatty did almost nothing but dance around the ring. easy round 1 victory. second round i think justin was spent. i have been watching mma for years. this doesn’t add up. anyone who watch’s and knows can agree, there should have been a third round fight. stand back up, and quit taking it in the ass…

The problem? Call me sexist but 2 female judges?! And they were the dorks who scored both rounds in favor of Nelson whereas the male judge scored it correctly awarding 1 round to each fighter (and I use that term loosely). Women’s role in MMA should be relegated to that of ring girl; can anyone argue that Arianny doesn’t do her job extremely well?! Adelaide Bird, the other goofy chick and other ditsy broads should stay out of MMA ’cause they’re nearly ruining it. My position is easily torpedoed however as Mazzagatti, Mirigliotta and Dean are all guys (though I must admit the fancy shirt Mazzagatti wore for Machida v. Rua kinda threw me). The bottom line: Can you imagine Roy Nelson facing a real fighter? Carwin, Fedor, Lesnar, Duffee, Nogueira, Couture, Arlovski, Rogers and probably several more would unmask this guy in the first round (unless they allowed him to fall on them a la Kimbo). And fighters should strive to keep it out of the judges hands ‘cause just as it is in boxing (yawn) they’ll almost certainly screw it up.

Roy nelsons a oversized tubby faggot, and full of himself. I can’t wait till he gets knocked off real shit. I put some money on mcsweeny or marcus jones to KO the fat out of him. Oh and fight should have went to a third round.

Though I thought it might go to a third round, I agree with the decision. Sure, Wren came out swinging for the first half of round one, but Nelson was hitting Wren with clean shots and looked more experienced in the later half. In my opinion, that round could have gone either way. But I think in the end, Nelson looked like the more experienced fighter. I actually didn’t really like him in his first fight, but I actually thought he did well in this fight.

But man, I don’t like that McSweeney guy. The way he shook his head at the end as if the decision was bogus. I’m shocked that he got the decision for his fight, which in my eyes, he clearly lost.

That is the craziest thing i have ever seen…. when they said it came to a decision i automatically said “justin won”. i thought just definitely won the first round hands down, the only thing fat boy did was run away when justin threw punches. the second round was close but i felt fat boy won it, but thought if there was any indecision it would have had to have been in the second round. i want to see kimbo come back and fight fat boy again, just to see how much kimbo has progressed through the show.

Roy won.Wren dominated at first but tired at the end of the first round. Roy did enough to make the round close. It’s not about who hits harder, it’s about who hits more. Wren spent all of his energy in the first 3-4 minutes. Roy got in a lil dirty boxing and a bunch of knees to keep it close but still losing. Nelson won the 2nd hands down.I knew that he would lose based on the pace Nelson kept after the last few minutes in the first. I think a 3rd was in order as well, but people forget that Wren has dead tired and the judges didn’t let the Junk Mittrione fight or the Shivers fight go to a 3rd and I didn’t expect them to go to 3 either this time.Roy definitely won the 2nd round by more than Wren won the 1st, as boring as it was

I have also to come to really dislike McSweeney, he is a real prat (and i am English). Who does he think he is – especially after his fight? Maybe he should go into coaching but he seems pretty crap at that too.

I had the fight scored at 1-1 and thought that Big Country was going to easily win the third, he was starting to dominate round two. His experience came through in the end and he did not gas himself out. I like Wren though and hope he goes onto do good things!

Got to agree with wesley woman judges in MMA – not the best.

Roy Nelson had his ass beat the first round. The judges that gave him both rounds clearly couldn’t see the fight cuz their heads were up eachothers asses. Wren was seconds away from putting Nelson’s head to bed in round one. Then Roy’s fatass did nothing but flick out jabs in the 2nd. Anybody that thinks Nelson actually won that fight obviously have their heads up the same asses the judges did.

People who think that Roy won are retarded. That shit needed a third round. In the first Wren dominated the first four mins and roy made it close the last min but you cant win 1/5 of a round and get the round….thats bullshit. The second was close but Roy won it in my opinion. That means a draw and a third round. Roy is fat an is gonna get his. Noone on the show is any good. They cant last a fucking round without being exhausted and are boring as shit. The first few seasons of TUF were awesome but now it seams like they are just putting names in that might draw ppl instead of focusing on fighting.
