Making his return to the ufc, former wec featherweight champion Mike Brown will meet with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ace, Diego Nunes this January.
The event in question, UFC 125 which takes place at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev. on January 1st, will host the lightweight title fight pitting current champion Frankie Edgar against Gray Maynard. Also in action, a man whom Brown is very familiar with, Jose Aldo will defend his featherweight title for the first time in the UFC when he takes on the talented Josh Grispi, as the co-main event of the evening.
Mike, a product of the famed American Top Team, will make his return to the cage since dispatching Cole Province at WEC 51, on September 30.
The 35-year-old was able to use his effective striking against Province, dropping him early in the first round with his powerful right hand, sealing the deal with a additional ground and pound blows before the referee intervened, calling off the bout and declaring Brown the winner by TKO.
The win helped Mike bounce back from a disappointing performance against Manvel Gamburyan last April inside the WEC. The finalist of season five of “The Ultimate Fighter” was able to connect on a right hook that dropped Brown, and a few telling blows later had knocked him out. It marks only the second time that Brown had been finished by strikes in his career. Jose Aldo holds the first honor.
Nunes, a perennial contender in the 145-pound division, has won four of his last five bouts inside the WEC. His lone loss came to former contender L.C. Davis in November of last year. He has since rattled off two wins in a row, beginning his streak with a decision victory over former top-10 fighter Raphael Assuncao and then against Tyler Toner.
The winner of this fight will be one step closer back towards a title shot for the (now) UFC featherweight championship.
MMAJunkie.com first reported the match up.
So, MMA peeps, what do you make of the match up? Brown should be the clear favorite over the Nova Uniao product. While Nunes trains with some of the best in the world, he is a notch behind the Jiu-Jitsu department compared to Mike, who holds a brown belt in BJJ against Nunes’ purple belt. But, you never know in MMA what can happen. Sound off in the comment section below.
