There aren’t many fighters in MMA who can match Clay Guida’s laid back demeanor, let alone his pedal-to-the-metal style inside the ring once the cage door closes. While the latter will be on display this weekend at UFC on FOX 1, the former is evident in nearly everything “The Carpenter” does whether relating to his shaggy haircut, his residence being a RV, or, as it turns out, his attitude towards being seen as top contender.
Guida and his adversary this Saturday night, Ben Henderson, are both in the midst of solid streaks with notable wins over game opposition and are seen as two of the division’s top challengers. However, UFC President Dana White recently came out and said their bout would not necessarily determine who was next in line for a shot at lightweight champion Frankie Edgar’s title.
The situation hasn’t phased Guida any as the 29-year old explained in an interview with CagePotato where said, “That stuff doesn’t bother me for a second. Emotional roller coasters are for little girls playing soccer. If anything, those things just help me focus more.”
The 29-11 grappler has no plans to start worrying about divisional gold right now since he’s never done so in the past, adding, “Hopefully a big win against Henderson will put an exclamation point on me being the legit, number one contender and show Joe Silva, Dana White, and the Fertita brothers. They’ve seen great performances from me but they’ve also seen me fall short a couple times.”
“It’s time to go out there and prove the critics wrong,” he concluded.
Guida vs. Henderson will be available for viewing live through Facebook or on FOX Desportes starting at approximately 8:30 PM EST. The main event featuring Cain Velasquez’s championship clash with Junior dos Santos is set for 9:00 PM EST on FOX with pre/post-fight analysis readily available through a variety of the television giant’s outlets.
