Strikeforce Results: Fabricio Werdum Edges Antonio Silva in a UD
By: Jason F. Hatcher Posted On: November 7, 2009 at 10:30pmThe first televised fight of the evening featuring “Bigfoot” Antonio Silva (12-2) against Fabricio Werdum (13-4-1) was a competitive back-and-forth war. Werdum, although challenged at times, won the fight via unanimous decision at Strikeforce in Chicago Saturday night.
Both fighters utilized a series of stance changes throughout the battle resulting in reasonable success for both men. Silva looked strong in the opening round with a regular serving of punch combinations as Werdum often answered with high kicks and takedowns.
Werdum, visibly hungry for a ground war dominated the rounds in those moments when the fight went down. Werdum took Silva’s back several times throughout the three rounds landing a respectable level of ground-and-pound and rabbit punches. By the end of the second round, Silva’s nose was bloody and Werdum’s right eye began to close.
Round three opened with Werdum changing his stance yet again. This time around, Werdum’s Muay Thai approach brought dividends as he landed a series of strong knees to the head of Silva within the clinch. Werdum spread the distance as the fight went to the ground again for the final time.
Referees scored the bout 29-28 in a unanimous decision in favor of Fabricio Werdum.
