As the WEC’s best begin to ascend to the ufc ranks, more and more match ups have been coming to fruition over the past week or so.
And now, former bantamweight contender Rahni Yahya will return to the featherweight division when he meets the adored “Korean Zombie” at UFC Fight Night 23, otherwise known as the second installment for “UFC Fight for the Troops”.
The event takes place at Fort Hood in Killeen, Tex., in front of our U.S. armed forces.
The headliner has been announced earlier last this week, when a reported lightweight match up pitting “The Ultimate Fighter” season one finalist Kenny Florian and contender Evan Dunham had been dubbed with main-event duties for the January 22. show.
Chan, a South Korean fighter whom is perhaps best known for his war with former featherweight title challenger Leonard Garcia last April at WEC 48. The two combatant’s battled it out for the full 15 minutes. The bout was filled with wild hay-makers, knockdowns, and in the end the closely contested match ultimately went to the score cards, where Garcia was crowned the winner by split-decision.
After the bout, Jung was met with a new fan following, and was ready to return to action quickly to deliver a new highlight reel performance. And that he did, when Chan was met with fellow featherweight and TUF veteran George Roop. However, it was Roop’s high kick-to-chin connection that lead to the highlight reel KO, and dropped Jung’s WEC record to 0-2.
Yahya, a K-1 Heroe’s veteran, returns to the featherweight division in hopes to revitalize his career. A world-class Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, Rahni initially debuted in the WEC with a quick first-round submission victory over now top contender Mark Hominick in 2007. He was then granted a title shot in the bantamweight division, however was unsuccessful in claiming the gold from then champion Chase Beebe who outworked the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt on the ground en route to a unanimous decision victory.
Since then, Yahya has gone 3-3 over his last six fights. He was, however, riding a three-fight win streak inside the WEC before being derailed by former title challenger’s Joseph Benavidez and Takeya Mizugaki, respectively.
MMAJunkie.com first reported the January 22 featherweight match up.
Both men, most likely, will be battling to remain under the Zuffa banner, as an additional loss could spell the proverbial UFC pink slip.
So, MMA peeps, what do you think of the match up? Should Yahya have returned to featherweight? Do you expect Chan to return to his winnings ways with another impressive performance? Sound off in the comment section below.
