Tonight marked one of the most anticipated promotional unveilings in MMA history, as competitors such as Gesias Cavalcante, Gerald Harris, Miguel Torres, Anthony Johnson, and Andrei Arlovski were among the talent-laden lineup scheduled to scrap at World Series of Fighting’s inaugural event. Better yet, fans had a chance to watch things unfold for free, as WSOF 1 aired live on NBC Sports!
The card was headlined by a heavyweight tilt between former UFC champion Arlovski and Strikeforce stand-out Devin Cole. Arlovski was last seen taking out Tim Sylvia in August, while Cole had won the bulk of his bouts by way of TKO and was out to score the upset. However, in the end Arlovski’s stand-up proved to be too much, as “The Pitbull” landed a strike at the midway point of the first round sending Cole to the canvas. He followed it up with a hammerfist, prompting Cole to turn over and essentially quit for what resulted in a strike-based stoppage.
While Arlovski’s performance was impressive, Johnson’s finish of DJ Linderman was perhaps the evening’s most memorable moment. The ending came when Johnson suffered a poke to the eye, looking to the ref for some respite only to be ignored. Linderman rushed in to attack “Rumble” only to eat a perfectly placed punch sending him face-first to the floor. The knockout was Johnson’s fourth win in a row since being cut by the UFC.
