There was never any doubting Brazil’s love for combat sports but few could have predicted exactly how successful the UFC would be in the South American hub. The organization has already made multiple stops in the birthplace of BJJ since first showing up there a little more than a year ago and will continue the trend in 2013.
Though not officially announced, the UFC’s next stop is rumored to be taking place on January 19. A number of match-ups have already been linked to the card including a recently reported bout between heavyweights Gabriel Gonzaga-Ben Rothwell.
MMAWeekly was first to break the story.
Gonzaga will be looking for his third straight instance of success come showtime, most recently submitting Ednaldo Oliveira earlier this year to notch the eighth tap-out of his career. The 13-6 Gonzaga has finished every opponent he’s beaten including an extremely memorable head-kick KO of Mirko Filipovic in 2007.
The 32-8 Rothwell is no slouch when it comes to stopping foes either considering his 29 TKOs/submissions. His last bout came in April where he flattened Brendan Schaub in a little more than a minute of action.
