A lot of people are getting in their picks for their favorite or most-wanted “UFC vs. WEC” fantasy match-ups now that it’s been announced that World Extreme Cagefighting will be folded into the UFC at the start of the new year. However, one fantasy match-up recently took a firm step into the land of reality. Current UFC Lightweight Champion Frank Edgar recently revealed that he would be more than willing to drop down to Featherweight if it meant taking on WEC wrecking machine and current Featherweight Champion Jose Aldo. Here are all the details.
Here’s what the unlikely (at first) Lightweight Champion had to say regarding his future plans, which apparently include Aldo, courtesy of MMADiehards.com: “’l’ll keep proving people wrong if I have to… When I got in the UFC, (1)55 was the smallest division. I could have fought in the WEC or other places, but I wanted to fight (1)55 and in the UFC… A fight with [Jose Aldo] would be huge. It would be a guy my size. He’d be a very dangerous opponent. (A cut to) (1)45 wouldn’t be too hard for me. I wouldn’t be surprised if Aldo cuts more than I do.”
If it ever happens, this fight will most likely be a “Champion vs. Champion” encounter. Fights like that are always difficult to put together, so I won’t get my hopes up just yet. But I do see both men keeping their titles for the foreseeable future. Jose Aldo needs no introduction; the man has been an engine of destruction since he first walked into the WEC. Nothing will be stopping him anytime soon, and I think Aldo’s aura will grow even larger as he opens himself up to a new legion of fans when he demolishes foe after foe inside of the UFC’s famous Octagon.
When it comes to Frank Edgar, he may be an unlikely champion, but his recent performances have proven that you simply can’t count him out of any fight, ever. Edgar has insane cardio, there’s virtually no difference in his pacing from the first round to the fifth. He’s an excellent grappler, and his takedown ability is downright scary considering that he’s not hugely muscled like a Sean Sherk or possesses the wrestling pedigree of a Georges St. Pierre. Frank Edgar is living proof that the best gameplan can overcome even the best of athletes.
And that’s what I think will make the difference if this fight ever came to fruition. I won’t pick against Jose Aldo, time and time again Aldo has destroyed every man in his path with relative ease. But I think Frank Edgar would have a far better shot than virtually anyone would ever give him credit for if these two champions fought each other. Edgar is easily one of the smartest fighters currently fighting in the UFC, his gameplans are virtually unmatched and his abilities are right up there with the UFC’s best. Jose Aldo will continue to inspire fear in virtually every single Featherweight currently walking the planet, but Frank Edgar will also continue to prove people wrong again and again and again. Aldo/Edgar would be fiercely competitive and I’d love to see it happen.
But what about you, fans and friends? Would Aldo run right through Edgar as he’s ran right through so many of his former opponents, or would Edgar pull off another mammoth upset?

its pretty obvious that frankie should win this fight. he is the lightest man in the ufc lightweight division pummeling bigger, stronger guys. aldo is wrecking fighters either his size or smaller. frankie would also be heavier handed at a lower weight. i give the edge to frankie.
It wouldn’t be an upset if either fighter won. Aldo ripped through WEC like a tornado, but Frankie just whooped a legend TWICE!! They are both at the top of their game. I would give the edge to Frankie. He’s relentless and is more well rounded. Aldo will come with the fury but it won’t phase Frankie. Actually, if Aldo lands a few nice ones that will just make The Answer snap like he did in his underground days.
