If you ask most fight fans who the bantamweight champion in the UFC is, most will say the crown is held by Renan Barao. While technically he is the interim champion, the widespread belief is that current champion Dominick Cruz should have been stripped of the title as he hasn’t fought in over two years. That is about to change. Cruz and Barao are now set to unify the titles as UFC 169, and when Barao heard the news that he would finally have a chance to get a crack at the real title, he was beyond happy.
Barao told MMAFighting:
“I was really happy with the news. We’re finally getting in there to do the fight that everybody wants to see and find out who’s the real champion. I always wanted it and rooted for his recovery.
“I feel I’m the champion. Being in there and doing my work, I’m a champion already. He’s also the champion, but I am too. Let’s see who leaves the Octagon as the champion.”
“I don’t believe that gives me an advantage,” he said. “What gives me an advantage is my training. I will work hard to get there at my best. I’m not counting him out because of the injuries.”
